Solid Piece of Film Noir
marty-11218 November 1999
Film is currently doing the film festival circuit (prize winner in Seattle). I caught it at a one night only Bismarck screening. In the Q&A following the screening, the director claimed that the only thing holding up distribution is the difficulty of distributing a black & white feature. This seemed silly to all in attendance as the stark palette was essential for the film's bleak vision. Think "They Drive By Night" or "Night of the Hunter" or "Touch of Evil" (the latter two mentioned as influences by the filmmakers) and try to image color film. Doesn't work does it?

My impression: the film was well written, surprisingly well acted for the budget (one of those productions where everyone is paid in beer), and very professionally crafted. Reminiscent of the neo-noir breakthrough "Blood Simple" without the flamboyant camera theatrics. Heck, even the music was effective.

Surprisingly good modern noir.

I saw this at a Bismarck theater when it was making the rounds. Unfortunately, all I have left is fond memories, a poster I bought afterward, and a desire to see the film again. Alas, it is nowhere to be found.

It was over five years ago that I saw this, so my memories are hazy, but previous comparisons to "Blood Simple" are not too far off, although Blood Simple was much less subtle. I actually enjoyed Dead Dogs a bit more because it was understated in its humor. I'd never seen any of the actors before, but they were all excellent, as was the directing, production design, and photography. If you are into true black-and-white noir, I can't recommend this enough. Good luck trying to find it anywhere now though.

An edge-of-the-seat thriller

This is a taut, stark movie that will grab you and not let go. I saw it at two showings, and was still biting my nails near the climax. The black and white works well, as it mirrors the characters' lives. I would definitely buy it, if available.
