28 September, 1904. Two elderly people, Mrs. Derckz and Mr. Takma visit one another each day. Together they have shared a terrible secret for sixty years. Now the secret may have consequences as Derckz' grandson Lot announces his engagement to Takma's granddaughter Elly.
Otillie has send her son Donald some money and has little left of her own, so she asks Takma for a loan. Lot and Elly get married and travel to Italy. Tante Thérèse implies she is privy to the precious family secret as well.
It has become apparent that there are many more people who know the secret than just Takma & Derckz. Ina is now obsessed with learning all about it herself. Elly & Lot visit Amélie in Italy while uncle Daan and his wife Floor arrive from Indonesia in the Netherlands.
Takma dies, leaving a final letter with evidence behind. Otillie, about whom it has long been rumored that she is Takma's daughter, returns to the Netherlands with her greedy son Donald for the inheritance.
Ellie & Otillie are to share Takma's inheritance. Steyn sees this as the perfect time to leave Otillie. Meanwhile Lot has become ill but finds new strength in the prospect of writing a new novel.
