Pat Carroll, the gregarious Emmy-winning comedienne who was a television mainstay for decades before segueing to a voiceover career that included portraying the villainous sea witch Ursula in The Little Mermaid, has died. She was 95.
Carroll died Saturday of pneumonia at her home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, her daughter Kerry Karsian told The Hollywood Reporter.
Carroll’s perky personality, screwball wit and impeccable timing made her a great second banana, and Red Buttons, Jimmy Durante, Mickey Rooney, Steve Allen and Charley Weaver were among those who called upon her to make their programs funnier. Her antics on Caesar’s Hour earned her an Emmy in 1957, and she was nominated for her work on the classic variety show the following year.

When I used to look back on my childhood - in the days before the internet’s all-seeing taint - there were three things that I always assumed were as much a constant of my young life as excessive sugar intake and making up innumerable excuses for having torn my trousers.
The first was Bertha (lovely Bertha), the stop motion-animated kids TV show helmed by Ivor Wood about a sentient factory machine - the titular Bertha - whose exploits helped trick a generation of British children into thinking that factory life was a non-stop cavalcade of japery, typified by super-advanced AI, funny wee robots and, most unrealistically of all, smiling faces. Ivor Wood must’ve been laughing all the way to the Illuminati seminar: “Enjoy your life of low-wage labour in the iron clutch of Thatcher's fist,...

Anneka Rice has revealed that she thinks Treasure Hunt should return to TV screens with a new presenter. The 53-year-old starred in the popular game show on Channel 4 between 1982 and 1988. Suzi Perry fronted an updated version on BBC Two in 2002. Talking about the show's success in the 1980s, Rice told ITV1's Daybreak: "At the time there was nothing on, TV was grown up, there was nothing spontaneous and mad. "Channel 4 took a big risk, it was totally unscripted, I was an unknown. It was so extraordinarily fresh after years of straight TV. It was so earnest as well, really uncynical." She added: "I don't know why they (more)...

Anneka Rice is in talks with the BBC about making her TV comeback after 17 years. The 53-year-old, who found fame with the launch of Treasure Hunt in 1983 and later fronted Challenge Anneka, is reportedly being considered to host a primetime lifestyle magazine programme and an arts show. BBC One controller Danny Cohen told The Mirror: "I've always been a fan of Anneka's work and I'm looking forward to developing different projects with her over the forthcoming months." Rice has appeared on TV sporadically since wrapping Challenge Anneka in 1995, fronting several special editions of the show up until 2007 and competing on the third (more)...

Hey you guys! “The Goonies” recently celebrated their 25th anniversary (read our review of the 25th Anniversarity Collector’s Edition DVD here), so Warner Bros. decided to celebrate the event by holding a “Great Goonies Treasure Hunt” on the WB lot. Out of the 25,000 people that entered the sweepstakes to compete, three were selected to hunt down a $5,000 grand prize. Original castmembers Corey Feldman (“Mouth”), Ke Huy Quan (“Data”), Jeff Cohen (“Chunk”), Lupe Ontiveros (“Rosalita”), Joey Pantoliano (“Francis Fratelli”), Robert Davi (“Jake Fratelli”), and director Richard Donner were present at the shindig. Check out footages from it below. If you’re a fan of the “Goonies”, I highly recommend getting the 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition. It’s quite the booty.

Pencil this in for the weekend. If you’re anywhere in Southern California working in new media or online video it’s worth a trip down to Orange County for the Anaheim International Film Festival. The five-day festival kicked off with an opening night gala on Wednesday at UltraStar Cinemas at Anaheim GardenWalk. Web series creator Canyon Prince, behind comedies First Edition and The Romantic Foibles of Esteban, is one of the producers of the festival and a big reason for this year’s heavy push into new media at the fest. Emerging independent films are the mainstay of the festival, but Prince was able to program a lineup that’s refreshingly more than a passing nod to the internet’s impact on entertainment. It’s a mix of screenings, panels and even a New Media Market for creators to showcase their works to prospective buyers and distributors. Sunday night...

Ever since YouTube rolled out annotations two years ago, we’ve seen all kinds of games and even blatant attempts at gaming the in-video links. But for Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Rob Polonsky—or ChadMattandRob as they are known to their YouTube faithful, they saw annotations as a whole new way to tell stories on the popular video platform. The trio, along with Lonely Island member Jonah Goldstein, whipped up a string of elaborate interactive comedy series starting with 2008’s breakout The Time Machine, which scored several million views across its web of “episodes.” They followed it up with The Murder in 2009 and then this year’s The Birthday Party which bowed in January (see below). Now the trailer for their latest interactive quest—The Treasure Hunt—hit the internet today (above) expected to release sometime later this summer. If there's excess cash lying around in your organization, you could probably use it. And Ge thinks it can help you find it as part of a Treasure Hunt program launched in collaboration with the Environmental Defense Fund (Edf). The aim is to find energy savings at companies, universities, and even in entire cities. The first program, conducted at Roosevelt Hospital as part of New York City's Hospital Challenge, found $2.1 million in energy savings (with a payback period of 2.6 years) that will save 7,500 metric tons of carbon emissions annually.
The process is fairly simple: Treasure Hunt teams (made up of staffers) are trained by Ge experts to survey facilities, looking for energy savings of all sorts--from Hvac systems and lighting to washing machines and computers. Teams use Ge and Gensuite's Eco Prospector tool to help them along the way. Each Treasure Hunt lasts for two days, so that each team can observe equipment during downtime,...

I’m A Celebrity camp mate George Hamilton was given the chance to call his girlfriend after the celebrities successfully won a Treasure Hunt challenge.
A laminate brought into camp contained a clue to find a scroll hidden in camp, each scroll led to the next clue until they found the buried treasure.
The clues were hidden in places like the dunny, the pool and swing and when the celebrities found the box they discovered their treasure was chocolate coins and and the opportunity for one of them to make one phone call.
Kim, Justin and Stuart all agreed that the phone call should be made by one of the men who had children either Gino, Jimmy or George. However, Sabrina really wanted the chance to talk to her mum.
Gino and Jimmy agreed that as their children could watch the show, George should be allowed the phone call; however,...

In the 1980s, when light entertainment revolved around such comedy luminaries as The Krankies, Canon & Ball and Russ Abbott, Anneka Rice was heaven-sent TV gold.
