Grimmupnorth 09: Review of Splintered

Year: 2008

Directors: Simeon Halligan

Writers: Simeon Halligan & Mat Archer & Stephen Trimingham

Review by: projectcyclops

Rating: 6 out of 10

One of headlining films at GrimmUpNorth was festival director Simeon Halligan's first feature: Splintered. The GrimmUpNorth horror festival itself was somewhat based around the release of this film, as the producers rented screens at the Printworks Odeon in Manchester as a means to publicise the film, while gathering other various titles to create a one-off festival that managed, as far as I'm concerned, to be a great success. Splintered screened on Saturday evening with a packed-out cinema of eager horror fans, and after a slight technical hitch the film played to great applause. The plot centers around a somewhat emo-ish teenager called Sophie (Holly Weston), who organises a trip to North Wales with her friends, and they drive off in search of a local legend.

Amulet Book Two: The Stonekeeper’s Castle

By Kazu Kibuishi

Scholastic/Graphix, 220 pages, $21.99 (hardcover) $9.99 (paperback)

Kazu Kibuishi is a talented animator and comic artist who has produced several graphic novel series, including Flight, Daisy Kutter: The Last Train, and now Amulet. The first volume came out over a year ago and now Scholastic has released the second book in the run. This book could have benefitted from a previously page for new readers.

The story is familiar as Emily Hayes discovers a necklace and amulet with magical powers. In the first volume, she and her younger brother Navin have adjusted to living in their great-grandfather’s home with their recently widowed mother. The amulet speaks to her, warning of impending danger which immediately results in a ghastly creature swallowing their mother. The chase is on to rescue her and book one achieves that goal, but she is gravely ill.

People have been talking about Diddy and Mase reuniting ever since an online video surfaced in which the Harlem Mc said he was coming from a meeting with the Bad Boy head honcho. But a different reunion might be going down between Diddy and one of his other acts.

"I would definitely love to do the next Lox album," he told Mixtape Daily recently in Los Angeles. "I would love to collaborate with them. I think it's important just to do. ... I would look forward to it."

Puff and the Warlocks together again? That would be big news for New York. The two factions were at odds for years before eventually patching things up. »

Diddy has had a few mantras over the years, from "we won't stop" to "the saga continues," which also doubled as an album title of him. Now, the hip-hop heavyweight has another one to add to the list: "It's a new era for Bad Boy."

Diddy has taken his label to a new company, recently announcing a partnership with Interscope Records after spending the past five years at Atlantic Records. The new union will usher in Diddy's next LP, the much-hyped concept album Last Train to Paris. On the project, Diddy will be aided by ex-Danity Kane singer Dawn Richard and songwriter Kalenna Harper, who make up the group Dirty Money along with the music mogul.

Diddy already knows what you're thinking: Singing? Him? Yup!

The Bad Boy Records CEO is going into crooner mode for his next album, The Last Train to Paris. It was an unexpected move for one of hip-hop's most successful moguls. Diddy, though, said it's a natural progression in his career, one that's seen him go from rap producer to pop star to fashion designer.

But just in case everyone isn't ready, he's gonna ease fans into the transition with the help of one of his good friends, Hype Williams, who will be directing each of the videos from the album, including the clip for lead single "Angels," which is being released virally Tuesday morning (September 8).

"I didn't wanna overwhelm people with that part of it [me singing]," Diddy explained to MTV News. »

Really Good Aural: 10 Podcasts You Shouldn't Miss

9 August 2009 11:52 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Ten podcasts and audio dramas to excite your incus, stimulate your stapes, and massage your malleus.

I have a thoroughly boring day job wherein I spend 8 hours a day sitting in front of a computer terminal entering data from health care forms. It doesn’t take a whole lot of brain power. Lucky me, we’re allowed to bring our mp3 players of choice and listen to music or whatever to keep us from slamming our foreheads into our monitors. I loaded up my iPod Nano with all the music I could stand to listen to and did my thing. The only problem was, I would zone out and get into the music and want to sing along. Not so bad for me, really, except for the fact that it’s generally frowned upon in a room full of other computer drones. They have their own shit to listen to. »
