- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: Where's Mr. Tapling?
- Matthews: He refuses to rise from his bunk, sir.
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: Does he indeed?
- [Below decks]
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: Good morrow, Mr. Tapling! When shall you grace us with your presence above decks?
- Tapling: Never. There is no point.
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: The Moors have come to fetch their gold.
- Tapling: The Moors? Don't let them aboard, set sail at once.
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: The gold is theirs by right.
- Tapling: I will not see them, send one of the men.
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: I need my men, Mr. Tapling!
- Tapling: I have pains in my body, I cannot move. The hand of Death is upon me.
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: In that case, you shall have no need for rations.
- [Takes away his food]
- Tapling: You would withold rations from a dying man?
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: I would consider it my duty to help speed your release from this world, sir.
- Tapling: [gets up] The Admiral will hear of this!
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: Each of us has a maggot in our past which will happily devour our future.
- [Captain Hammond's longboat finally rescues Hornblower and Foster who is very annoyed at how long it took]
- Capt. Hammond: Thank God sir.
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: Yes but no thanks to you sir!
- Capt. Hammond: We followed as fast as we could get these rock scorpions to row.
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: Mr. Hornblower come aboard sir.
- Capt. Hammond: Mr. Hornblower sir.
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: You will trust me following us to pick us up sir. I thought I could at least rely on a brother captain!
- Capt. Hammond: What are you implying sir?
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: I make no implications sir but others may read implications into a simple statement of fact!
- Capt. Hammond: I consider that an offensive remark sir.
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: I congratulate you or your perspicacity sir!
- Capt. Hammond: Would you care to withdraw your statement with an apology!
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: I would NOT!
- Capt. Hammond: [pause then quietly and slowly] Very well we will continue this further when we reach shore.
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: We will sir when I will expect an apology from you!
- Capt. Hammond: [shouts] BY GOD SIR I will not stand for this! I will have recompense in a duel at first light!
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: I will look forward to that with pleasure sir!
- Capt. Hammond: I will send a friend to wait on you!
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: He will be most welcome!
- [everyone catches their breath, Hornblower is stunned]
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: [to Hornblower] What are you staring at man?
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: Nothing sir.
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: [pause] My life is in your, debt, Mr. Hornblower.
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: Not for long it would seem sir.
- Captain 'Dreadnought' Foster: Huh?
- [then realises what Hornblower means]
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: [as the quarantine voyage ends] You served us well on the voyage, sir.
- Tapling: [shrugs] No more than my fair share, and I've gained much in return. A new acquaintance with the cuts of a bullock and the worth of full bellies for the men. Such knowledge will serve me well.
- Capt. Sir Edward Pellew: Look, you have nothing to reproach yourself with. One man has died. Others may live, thanks to you.
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: [referring to Captain Foster] He's truly a great man, sir. To be half the man that he is would see my life fulfilled.
- Lt. Bracegirdle: Careful, Mr. Hornblower, such greatness always has its price.
- [on the quarantine voyage]
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: And slaughter a bullock for the men.
- Matthews: A bullock, sir?
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: Every meal may be our last. Let's make sure it's a feast.
- Matthews: [laughs] Aye, aye, sir!
- [the men receive fresh beef for supper during the quarantine voyage]
- Styles: Let us pray... that we'll be in quarantine for the rest of our lives.
- [the aristocratic Mr. Tapling is assigned Cook's Mate on the quarantine voyage, and is helping the Steward to butcher a bullock]
- Tapling: This is without question the most revolting experience of my entire life.
- Steward: It has its advantages, sir.
- Tapling: None that I can see.
- Steward: The man with the hatchet gets to pick the choicest cuts.
- Tapling: Indeed... show me.
- Lt. Bracegirdle: [Observing Hornblower as he stares out to sea] Something disturbs your thoughts, I fancy.
- Acting Lt. Horatio Hornblower: Just thinking of the distances we travel and yet how far we've still to sail as men.
