With The Empire Strikes Back entering production, George Lucas wanted very much to keep Star Wars on the minds of the public, but he wasn't directly involved with the production of this special. Besides creating the characters and directing the original movie (scenes of which can be seen), his involvement with this Star Wars Holiday Special was very minimal.
