Himself - Anchor: [Dan Rather's farewell newscast on March 9, 2005, his 24th anniversary] We've shared a lot in the 24 years we've been meeting here each evening, and before I say 'Good night' this night, I need to say thank you. Thank you to the thousands of wonderful professionals at CBS News, past and present, with whom it's been my honor to work over these years... more

Not too bad news, 28 September 2003

For many years Dan Rather was the number one network news anchor. He was considered to be one of the finest news anchors of the day, replacing Walter Kronkite. He has been there for along time, and he fell second to Peter Jennings of ABC and eventually third to Tom Brokaw of NBC. These days Tom Brokaw is on top, Rather remains on the bottom.

A lot of people do not like Dan Rather. I always have, I thought he was a good reporter and never took himself too seriously, he has appeared on Letterman a lot and is not above self parody. While he is on network television I think he is still a decent journalist.

When Connie Chung was on this show it was still good, I have to admit I only watch network news on occasion, I like Rather, but Jennings is still my favorite, he is just cool. Rather is second, I still cannot stand the incredibly stiff Tom Brokaw, but I think Brokaw is still an intelligent man. I know he has a lot of very strange sayings, and he said a lot of them during the 2000 election. They are a little strange, like ‘this race is tighter than spandex.'

In general I do not watch TV to get news, I get on the web these days, it is so much easier and there is a lot more news you can put on CNN or the BBC, than you can get from a half hour of news. Still Rather is pretty decent as a news anchor, and he has been around for along time. I think he looks good for a man who is over 70 years old too.
