Update 21/05/24: As confirmed on the latest edition of Richard Osman and Marina Hyde’s The Rest is Entertainment podcast, the latest cast member to be confirmed is Celia Imrie in the role of Joyce Meadowcroft. Joyce would love that, we feel.
As previously reported by Variety in April 2024, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley and Pierce Brosnan are also attached to The Thursday Murder Club film adaptation, which is being directed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone director Chris Columbus. Mirren will of course play former spy Elizabeth, Kingsley will play psychiatrist Ibrahim, and in something of a casting curveball, Pierce Brosnan will play former union organiser Ron. That just leaves police officers Donna and Chris, and handyman/fixer Bogdan as main characters still to be announced.

His portrayals of the idiosyncratic, moustache-fanatic, and rule-imposing Bhawani Shankar or the stern Acp Dhurandhar Bhatawadekar in a brace of breezy Bollywood comedies are undeniably unforgettable, but he played a more realistic role in ‘Guddi’ – that gentle deconstruction of the glittering yet hollow edifice of filmdom.
Utpal Dutt, as Prof Gupta in the 1971 film, knows neither scolding nor advice will change the filmstar-struck teenager (then Jaya Bhaduri in her first Hindi film), and the only way out is to let her indulge in fascination with films and learn first-hand the artificiality, heartbreaks, and struggle that lies behind them.
Portraying a teacher, with innovative ideas, was not difficult for Dutt, who was born on this day (March 29) in Bengal’s Barisal (now in Bangladesh) in 1929. May December, Todd Haynes’ film that received an eight-minute standing ovation at Cannes late on Saturday evening, is a film all about transgression, star Julianne Moore told the press Sunday.
Asked to explain the title, Haynes said it referred to an English expression for an “age-gap relationship.” He paused before quipping, “In France, they call it the Macron.”
Haynes’ latest stars Moore (in her fourth collaboration with the director), Natalie Portman and Charlie Melton, and tells the story of an actress Elizabeth (Portman) who travels to Maine to study the life of a real-life woman Gracie (played by Moore) she is set to play in a film.
The Haynes-esque complication comes with the reason for Gracie’s notoriety, the fact she was previously jailed for a relationship with an underage partner Joe, played by Melton — the transgression on which Moore reflected:
“My character is someone who transgresses, and how do we address that?...

Michael Stipe, Chvrches, and Coldplay are just a few of over 60 artists who’ve contributed to the 2023 iteration of EarthPercent’s annual Earth Day compilation album. Proceeds will benefit the Brian Eno-founded charity’s grant giving program, which directly benefits organizations fighting the ongoing climate crisis.
Stipe — a frequent eco-advocate — contributes the track “Give Me a Hand,” a moody art-pop number featuring guest vocals from folk singer and disability advocate Gaelynn Lea. Meanwhile, Chvrches reunite with their pal Robert Smith of The Cure for a rendition of their song “How Not to Drown,” recorded live at the Brixton Academy. Coldplay tap H.E.R. for another live track, this one being their ballad “Let Somebody Go” at the River Plate.
Also featured on the compilation are Eno, Dry Cleaning, dodie, Bring Me the Horizon, Julia Holter, Mystery Jets, and many more. Stream the album via Bandcamp below.

As we all know, music is a very big part of Hindi film and the makers of the film Kaabil certainly made sure that the songs of the Hrithik Roshan-Yami Gautam film are pitch perfect. This time, team Kaabil has revisited the golden song from the 1975 film Julie, Dil Kya Kare.
Speaking on the wonderful rendition Kisi Se Pyar Ho Jaye, the film’s music composer Rajesh Roshan said, “After Saara Zaamana, we all thought it be a great idea to add another twist to the Kaabil album and the unanimous choice was my all time favorite song, Dil Kya Kare. This song is very close to my heart and I was curious to see how Hrithik will look in this version. The soul of the song is maintained and that has to be credited to Jubin’s moving vocals, he understands my music language very well and...

Directed by Sujoy Ghosh
It’s just another ordinary humid laconic night in Chandanagar, a small dusty town on the outskirts of Kolkata where, as one grinning havaldar informs his senior, nothing ever happens.
Well, all that is about to change. Sujoy Ghosh’s small-town suspense thriller knocks the bottom of the thriller genre. Kahaani 2, no relation to the first film in the suspenseful series that Sujoy directed to ever-casting fame (it’s Vidya Balan all the way in this franchise) is not only a first-rate action drama with some of the most ingenious action (including one absolutely spellbinding fist-to-fist between the brave Balan and female khaki-clad assassin) it is also a haunting deeply disturbing mirror of our times when normalcy and decorum often hide grievous disturbances, best left untampered and unrevealed. Until someone dares to tell the truth.

The music we grow up with shapes our tastes in later life, according to a study by Cornell University. We asked Guardian writers to tell us about the songs that take them back to their childhood homes
'My mother would listen to the Carpenters while ironing'
Of the handful of albums my parents owned, it was The Carpenters' Singles 1969-1973 that struck me the most. I remember being particularly fascinated by Rainy Days and Mondays. With the benefit of hindsight, I suspect it was because it was the first piece of music I had ever heard that appeared to perfectly suit the circumstances in which I heard it. My mother would listen to the Carpenters in the afternoon, while doing the ironing in the front room, and I remember thinking that was what the woman in the song was probably doing too. In my head she was singing it...

To celebrate the release of English Vinglish, we here at Bollyspice felt it was only appropriate to provide you guys with a brief career retrospective of the film’s leading star. It is none other than the beautiful and delightful Sridevi, who officially makes her comeback with with this film. Having been absent from the Indian film industry for over fifteen years, Sridevi has not lost her touch at all when it comes to displaying great acting. This is evident with the high praises she has so far received from critics for her stirring performance in English Vinglish. Bollyspice’s very own Anjum Shabbir mentioned in her review of the film that Sridevi’s comeback is by far the best you will see so far!
