Lifting the Lid on W.C. with Liam O Mochain

(Julia Wakeham and director/actor Liam O Mochain in Wc, above.)

by Alan Kline

When I first visited Irish filmmaker Liam O Mochain ten years ago on the set of his debut feature, The Book That Wrote Itself, one of the first things I noticed was that he had managed to pull together production elements that would have been difficult for a film with ten times the budget. On the first day, he had managed to get the City of Dublin to give him a double-decker bus, complete with driver, to shoot on throughout the city. I, and a few dozen other tourists, had just paid the equivalent of $20 each for a tour on a similar bus, just the day before. Later in the production, he visited the Venice Film Festival with a small crew, attended a press conference, and asked a variety of celebrity luminaries questions, in character as Vincent, »

More Reasons to Avoid that Wannabe Screenwriter at Starbucks…

21 September 2009 9:12 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Screenwriter Larry Cohen is the writer of “Phone Booth” and “Cellular”, so right away you should expect a pretty nifty premise for a thriller that can be made on the cheap. Or a moderate budget that doesn’t involve hiring a superstar for $20 million. Cohen’s latest is “Messages Deleted”, about a screenwriter (played by a nearly unrecognizable Matthew Lillard) who becomes involved in a series of killings that seem to mirror one of his scripts way too closely. Predictably, the cops start to suspect that he might be responsible, and really, can you blame them? Especially when the about-to-be-dead victims start calling him and begging him for help. Luckily for our hero, one of the cops investigating him is Deborah Kara Unger, so there’s that. A couple of plotlines I’ve read on the net seems to give away the film’s twist ending, so be careful if »

21 September 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Larry Cohen, the writer behind "Phone Booth" and "Cellular," is back with another phone-related thriller called "Messages Deleted," starring Matthew Lillard." We now have the trailer for it and you can check it out below. Plot: A quivering voice begs screenwriter, Joel Brandt, to pick up the phone on a message from his answering machine. Thinking its a prank, Joel deletes the message. The caller is found dead. Another caller leaves Joel a message; there is another murder... then another... then another. The killer has Joel's attention, and Joel now has the attention of the police. Now the prime suspect in a series of murders, Joel discovers this psychotic killer has targeted him for a reason found within his body of work. Will Joel be able to re-write his ending, or be forced to pay the ultimate price? "Messages Deleted" is the directorial debut of Rob Cowan, the producer of »

Messages Deleted Trailer

Matthew Lillard doesn’t have the chops to be a good dramatic actor. I learned this years ago with Thirteen Ghosts. However, you can’t blame the man for trying, because there aren’t any Scooby Doo sequels on the horizon. (There is a made for TV prequel coming, though, if that’s your thing. Lillard isn’t involved.)

Director Rob Cowan (The Crazies remake, Righteous Kill, The Net) has completed screenwriter Larry Cohen’s Messages Deleted, the third in a string of phone-centric films from the writer following Cellular and Phone Booth.

While the central concept of the film isn’t altogether bad, Lillard seems silly and Deborah Kara Unger doesn’t seem to help. The official plot synopsis is as follows:

A quivering voice begs screenwriter, Joel Brandt, to pick up the phone on a message from his answering machine. Thinking its a prank, Joel deletes the message. »

Messages Deleted Trailer Online

20 September 2009 11:00 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

That master juggler of the high concept and the low budget Larry Cohen has had a bit of a late surge of telecommunications-themed thrillers. The latest example is Messages Deleted, and you can check out the trailer here.Cohen of course, is the director of It's Alive, Return to Salem's Lot and Q The Winged Serpent, but he's as well known for his screenplays as his talent behind a camera. Phone Booth was directed by Batman villain Joel Schumacher, and Cellular by former stuntman David R Ellis, who went on to Snakes on a Plane and The Final Destination. Time will tell if such dizzy heights await Rob Cowan; lately a producer by trade, although he's credited as First Ad on Stakeout and Cocktail.Messages Deleted stars Deborah Unger, whose presence doesn't help this not feel a bit like The Game, and Matthew Lillard as the screenplay writer (and college lecturer, »

20 September 2009 10:12 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The first trailer has arrived for Phone Booth / Cellular writer, Larry Cohen's, new one Messages Deleted. It's got a kind of tightly-wound I Know What You did Last Summer meets 88 Minutes vibe to it so I think it definitely has the potential to be a decedent mid-budget thriller.

Synopsis:

A quivering voice begs screenwriter, Joel Brandt, to pick up the phone on a message from his answering machine. Thinking its a prank, Joel deletes the message. The caller is found dead. Another caller leaves Joel a message; there is another murder...then another...then another. The killer has Joel's attention, and Joel now has the attention of the police.

DVD Review: Indie Thriller ‘Fissure’ With James MacDonald, Crystal Mantecon

17 August 2009 10:37 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Hardcore movie lovers know the joy of finding a clever comedy or taut thriller that they had never even heard of before they went to the video store. What’s more exciting? Having your preview-determined opinions confirmed or finding something totally off the beaten path? It may not be perfect, but Russ Pond’s consistently interesting “Fissure” could be the hidden gem you’re looking for this weekend.

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0 Perhaps it’s because of my theatrical background, but I have a certain affinity for small-cast, one-set films like “Fissure”. Like a lot of indie movies, “Fissure” keeps it simple in both setting and cast with only a few speaking roles and generally one set.

Fissure was released on DVD on August 11th, 2009.

Most indie films with a sci-fi thriller edge live and die on their concept, but what’s intriguing about “Fissure” is »

Ryan Reynolds the Only Actor Seen in Buried

5 July 2009 5:28 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Ryan Reynolds recently went on Australian television and spoke publicly for the first time about his ambitious upcoming film Buried while promoting The Proposal. The indie film, from Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés and screenwriter Chris Sparling, is about an American contractor in Iraq whom awakens after being kidnapped buried in a coffin with only a cell phone, candle and knife. The entire 80-minute run time will be spent fixated on the coffin's interior. The quotes come via The Playlist where Reynolds suggests he will be the only person in the entire movie. "Buried is the story about a guy whose buried (laughs). It's the only movie I've ever heard of with only one person in it," Reynolds said. "So it's just me, I'm the only person in the whole movie so, I don't know, we'll see. It's either going to be, you know, the greatest, most experimental cool movie ever made or god knows what. »

When Films Fall Victim To Bad Timing

4 June 2009 1:47 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Motion pictures are years or even decades in the making. As much as we like to ascribe credit to directors who manage to capture the zeitgeist -- like when Sam Raimi uses a put-upon mortgage broker as the heroine of his new movie right in the middle of an economic crisis fueled by the collapse of the housing market -- the truth is, more often than not, a movie's cultural relevancy is a matter of luck and timing. In the case of "Drag Me To Hell," Raimi's film was eerily prescient, but just as often the opposite turns out to be the case.

No one could have predicted, for example, the tragic accidental death of Exodus Tyson, Mike Tyson's four-year-old daughter, or that it would come just weeks after the release of one film starring Tyson (James Toback's documentary "Tyson") and days before another, Todd Phillips' new comedy "The Hangover, »

Kiefer Sutherland is once again finding himself on the wrong side of the law in real life — and his newest troubles are likely to last far longer than 24 hours. TMZ is reporting that the "24" star will be charged with misdemeanor assault this week, in connection with a head-butting incident that occurred Monday.

Sutherland's bizarre encounter might have started as a somewhat noble gesture, the type that would make Jack Bauer proud. Attending a Costume Institute Gala afterparty in New York's SubMercer bar on Monday evening, Sutherland reportedly witnessed a designer named Jack McCullough knocking over Brooke Shields. When the actor asked the Proenza Schouler designer to apologize and was pushed in return, Sutherland allegedly responded with a head-butt that broke McCullough's nose.

First look: From the writer of Phone Booth comes Messages Deleted

17 April 2009 9:15 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Writer Larry Cohen certainly has a love/hate relationship with phones of all kinds. I mean, even before cell phones became our favorite and most hated form of communications, he was using the pay phone as a device for thrilling cinema. Then he made Cellular and now he's got a new phone themed thriller in the can called Messages Deleted about:

A screenwriting teacher who is forced to live out the plot of a screenplay idea he stole from a student, who now seeks revenge.

Messages Deleted stars Matthew Lillard (that's him with a gun to his head) and the beauteous Deborah Kara Unger. It's directed by producer Rob Cowan who is currently producing The Crazies. There's no word on the film's official release date but I know it's done because it screened at the European Film Market back in February.

We've got the first poster and stills for you after the break. »

Box office

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker raced into the number one position with Fast and Furious. The action sequel banked a massive $72 million over the weekend - showing that there is plenty of gas left in the Fast and Furious franchise. Maybe Vin Diesel will get those Riddick movies made after all.

Monster vs. Aliens dropped to second place but it still managed to gross $33 million giving the animated film a gross of over $100 million.

The Haunting in Connecticut took another $9.6 million bringing the total gross to a pretty decent $37 million.

Ang Lee Helming Adaptation of Yann Martel's Life of Pi

18 February 2009 2:12 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Not to be confused with Monty Python's Life of Brian, Yann Martel's novel "Life of Pi" is set to be adapted by Taiwanese director Ang Lee. The story follows an Indian boy named Piscine "Pi" Molitor Pate who is the lone survivor of a sunken freighter that winds up sharing a lifeboat with a hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan and a hungry Bengal tiger. So it's kind of like The Jungle Book and Noah's Ark combined, or at least that's my initial perception. The project is being developed at Fox 2000 and while there are older scripts around, including one by M. Night Shyamalan, Lee will find and hire a new writer to adapt. Fox producer Gil Netter, who has a very sketchy track record with films like Phone Booth, Flicka, Eragon, and Marley & Me to his name, is producing. Ang Lee is currently finishing his Taking Woodstock film, »
