The freshly funded (with $825 million) DreamWorks has greenlit its first project - Real Steel, which will be directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and star Hugh Jackman. You've probably heard about this project before, as we've written about it twice before. Real Steel is a futuristic Rocky-esque story about a father and son who take their human-like 2000-pound robot to the Bot Boxing Championship. It's originally based on a short story by Richard Matheson that was adapted by Dan Gilroy (Freejack, The Fall) in 2005 (that draft was sold to DreamWorks for $850,000) then revised by John Gatins (Hardball, Coach Carter).
Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider will both be producing at DreamWorks, the first movie they've greenlit since splitting with Universal. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) is in talks to star in the "Real Steel" film, which is based on a short story by Richard Matheson. The story was previously made into a "Twilight Zone" episode called "Steel," starring Lee Marvin. The new movie is a tale of a fighter who has to reinvent himself when human boxing becomes obsolete, replaced by 2000 pound human-like robots. Jackman will play the ex-fighter, who becomes a Robot Boxing promoter, but whose chances of success are hampered by his access to sub-standard robot parts. That is until he discovers a discarded robot that always seems to win. The ex-fighter has also discovered he's the father of a 13-year old son, and they bond as the robot brawls its way toward the top. "Real Steel" is set to be directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and is produced by Steven Spielberg. John Gatins (Hard Ball, Coach Carter

Earlier this week, we talked about director Peter Berg’s upcoming movie plate being fuller than a Biggest Loser contestant standing in a buffet line before going on the show. With his involvement on Battleship, Hancock 2 and now Dune, Berg will be busy for the better part of the next 6 years - so it’s no wonder that DreamWorks recently announced Berg stepping aside on the robot boxing movie Real Steel.
Who do you think they choose to replace him? None other than the Mr. Cotton Candy himself, Shawn Levy. You may remember Levy from such cinema greats as The Pink Panther, Just Married, Big Fat Liar, and Cheaper by the Dozen. He also directed both Night at the Museum films, the first being great; the second was fun but didn’t live up to the first. Now, before you say I’m not giving the guy a chance,
