Galaxy Quest Blu-ray Review

24 November 2009 9:30 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When you talk about the year of cinema that was 1999, there are the films that come immediately. Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, Eyes Wide Shut. I love The Insider, have a soft spot for eXistenZ and Three Kings and then it starts getting complicated, as films like American Beauty, Girls Don’t Cry, and The Green Mile haven’t exactly weathered as well, while films like Office Space have only grown in estimation.  At the time, most wouldn’t have listed Galaxy Quest as one of the great films of 1999, and yet ten years later, someone like David Mamet can call it a perfect movie. And it is. By Grabthar’s Hammer, my review of Galaxy Quest after the jump.

The premise is simple: what if aliens watched Star Trek and thought it was real? Tim Allen plays Jason Nesmith who plays Peter Quincy Taggart, the Kirk character »

(Please support Quick Stop by using the links below to make any impulse purchases - it helps to keep us going…)

I admit, I went into Jj Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek (Paramount, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 Srp) not wanting to like it, based on my less than enthusiastic view of Abrams’ previous work and a healthy level of fondness for Trek (when it was done right - not in the crap Berman/Braga/Voyager/Enterprise/latter-day films era). So yes, I had to be won »

'Star Trek' Boldly Goes, Brüno Gets Sensational And More In The DVD Report For November 17

17 November 2009 3:46 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

While the rest of the planet is looking forward to "New Moon," here in the world of home entertainment it's all about looking back...specifically to two of the summer's biggest films which are now hitting store shelves. From space cadets to a fashion-savy Austrian, this is your DVD Report for Tuesday, November 17.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a group more anxious than "Star Trek" fans on the date director J.J. Abrams was tapped to reboot the franchise. It was a tall order. "Trek" had notably faltered at the box office after the dreadful "Nemesis," and had been unceremoniously dumped from the airwaves after the lackluster "Enterprise." And now here was a guy who openly boasted that he had barely watched "Star Trek." Even his directing credentials were thin -- a few television episodes here and there and one feature film in "Mission: Impossible III." It all made for a »

Galaxy Quest - Blu-ray Review

17 November 2009 11:49 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

To boldly go where no Blu-ray has gone before. oh wait, wrong movie. However, fans of that other film will want to pick up this Blu-ray when they.re grabbing the Blu-ray of the reboot of that unnamed franchise. Galaxy Quest is a delightful parody of that iconic sci-fi show that also has a heart of its own. Galaxy Quest has been off the air for seventeen years. The original cast has been typecast by their science fiction appearances and only seems to get work at the Galaxy Quest conventions. The intrepid crew includes Dr. Lazarus of Tev.Meck played by Sir Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman), an actor who resents his role and catchphrase. Communications officer Lieutenant Tawny Madison »

I don't know if any of you took my advice on the 50% off Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble I mentioned two weeks ago, but you have one more week and I have already taken advantage of it by getting Battle of Algiers, the Fanny and Alexander box set and upgraded my single-disc version of Seven Samurai with the three-disc edition. I basically paid about $70 for the whole thing with my Barnes and Noble Membership card and it's about $160 worth of DVDs so that's a good deal in my book. Take advantage of it and use this coupon to save an extra $5.

Now, for this week's DVDs.

Gone With the Wind (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collection) I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition of this and was incredibly impressed. What's even more impressive is Amazon is charging only $45.49 for both the »

If you're a fan of outer space-themed entertainment, then you'll find plenty to love in this week's rundown of new releases in home video. First and foremost, we've got the J.J. Abrams reboot of the beloved Star Trek franchise, which came out in May of this year. Then, we've also got the complete series of the Sci-Fi (now SyFy) Channel's original show, Farscape, and hitting Blu-Ray for the first time is the somewhat "spoofy" comedy Galaxy Quest. Making The (Up) Grade: Galaxy Quest

14 November 2009 8:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Paramount Home Entertainment has employed an interesting tactic in 2009 releasing certain films on standard-definition months ahead of their debut on Blu-ray. This was the case with the first three Friday the 13th films, and now it's the case with Galaxy Quest; I don't have the numbers in terms of either awareness or sales, but I wonder how many dutiful consumers pay attention to both editions and choose to wait, as opposed to buying one only to see it become obsolete just a few short months later. In any case, what's most important is that most of all of the films released this way thus far are fan favorites, and especially Galaxy Quest is a classic in its own right, all of which is why the new Blu-ray release is the subject of this week's "Making The (Up) Grade."

DVD review: Star Trek

13 November 2009 7:33 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Paramount, rental and retail

As reboots for an old, tired franchise go, this is nearly as good as Martin Campbell's Casino Royale, which similarly went back to basics to explain the character's formation. The "making of" extra makes it clear that director Jj Abrams felt it needed "a little more rock'n'roll". As well as speeding things up, he also made as much of it as real as he could, even using outdated concepts like miniatures. There are moments of real beauty alongside the complex plot explaining how Kirk and Spock came to meet. Diverse elements, including Simon Pegg's Scotty and a gaunt 78-year-old Leonard Nimoy are successfully worked in and, for anyone who has seen Zachary Quinto in Heroes, his casting as the contemporary Spock is, well, logical. The best Star Trek film to date, except for Galaxy Quest.

Pixar Looks 'Up,' 'Watchmen' Gets Ultimate And More In The DVD Report For November 10

10 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

After last week's jam-packed release schedule led by "G.I. Joe," we're given an opportunity to breath today with only two new theatrical titles coming to market, along with an assortment of action-filled catalog offerings making their way to Blu-ray. This is your DVD Report for Tuesday, November 9.

Disney's Pixar was flying high after the critically and commercially acclaimed "Wall-e," so naturally they looked to the skies for their next animated outing, "Up." The film focuses on Carl Fredricksen, an elderly shut-in who aims to pay homage to his late wife by relocating to the top of a South American paradise the couple had always dreamed of visiting. Equipping his home with hundreds of helium balloons, the house lifts off its foundation and floats away, inadvertently taking with it a young wilderness scout who grows attached to the grumpy septuagenarian at the start of a grand adventure.

Sigourney Weaver and John C. Reilly Face the Rapids

4 November 2009 6:09 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Want to know why Sigourney Weaver has the comedic ability to do a great job in movies like Ghostbusters or Galaxy Quest? Or why John C. Reilly cracked you up so darn well in Step Brothers?

Take a look at Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm or the highly underappreciated Criminal. These guys have the acting chops to pull off drama effortlessly, and like the best comedic actors, have an understanding of every bit of the craft.

This is why I’m so excited for Miguel Arteta’s (Youth in Revolt) new film Cedar Rapids, which has added Weaver and Reilly to the cast alongside Alia Shawkat, The Office’s Ed Helms, and Anne Heche.

Rapids, developed by Helms and Phil Johnston (Flightless Birds), the film will “center on a wholesome and naive small-town Wisconsin man (Helms) who, when his role model dies, must represent his company at a regional insurance conference in Cedar Rapids, »

Jared & Jerusha Hess Interview Gentlemen Broncos

Writing and producing partners Jared and Jerusha Hess, who are also husband and wife, have made a career out of championing the underdog. With their quirky sense of humor and their inspiration from the unlikeliest of places, the duo’s success with “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre” have carved them a niche in Hollywood that they are quite happy with.

At the press day for “Gentlemen Broncos”, the Hesses talked about working with special effects for the first time and assembling the cast for this film about an outsider with big dreams trying to achieve what he wants to do in life. Continued after the jump:

Question: Where did you get the title, Gentlemen Broncos?

Jared: The title of the film comes from my mom, who had this really weird parenting book when I was growing up. I have five younger brothers, and it was this book, called So You Want to Raise a Boy? »

Awesome New Still of Sam Rockwell in ‘Gentlemen Broncos’

14 October 2009 11:53 AM, PDT | MovieSet.com | See recent MovieSet.com news »

Sam Rockwell has played some pretty entertaining characters, from his role as Guy in Galaxy Quest, to Zaphod Beeblebrox in The Hitchhiker’s Guide with several serious roles in-between, but get ready to see him in a hilarious new light as Bronco/Brutus in the upcoming comedy ‘Gentlemen Broncos.’

Gentlemen Broncos tells the story of Ben Purvis, a home schooled teenage outcast and aspiring fantasy writer who attends a fantasy convention and finds his idea, Bronco, ripped off by acclaimed novelist Ronald Chevalier, who has turned desperate for ideas.

In the film, Rockwell’s character changes from Bronco to Brutus after Chevalier plagiarizes Ben’s work. Gentlemen Broncos is directed by Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess.

Fight Club was a box office disappointment ten years ago, but it has gained a Huge cult following since - and it must have made an absolute mint on DVD. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton star in this David Fincher directed adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s now-famous novel. The film is another example of world perspective from a late 90s view point. »

Justin Long Joins Conspirator

14 October 2009 4:17 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Word reaches via The Hollywood Reporter that Justin Long has joined Robin Wright Penn and James McAvoy in The Conspirator, a historical drama set just after the Civil War that will be directed by Robert Redford.

The film tells the story of Mary Surrat, played by Wright Penn, a Confederate sympathiser who is tried as a conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Colonel Frederick Aiken, played by McAvoy, reluctantly agrees to help defend Surrat before a military tribunal. Long is onboard to play Col. Aiken's best friend, a man who lost a limb and grew a conscience in the Civil War.

The historical drama marks a first for Long, who is typically cast in more comedic roles, such as his turn in Die Hard 4.0 as the comic counterweight to Bruce Willis' John McClane, or his first role, in the successful Star Trek spoof, Galaxy Quest.
