The Hunger Games Box Office: All-Time Top Twenty? Think Again

21 April 2012 6:29 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Chimpanzee movie Zac Efron/The Lucky One Box Office: $25 Million? At no. 3 this weekend behind Think Like a Man and The Lucky One, Gary Ross' The Hunger Games is expected to collect about $13 million. Its Friday take was $4 million according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth star. The Hunger Games' domestic cume stands at an estimated $346.4 million, which means the dystopic adventure drama is now the no. 20 movie ever at the domestic box office. That is, if you live on a planet where little things called "inflation" and "IMAX surcharges" don't exist. On Box Office Mojo's all-time box-office chart, The Hunger Games currently finds itself sandwiched between Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon's $352 million and Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' $342 million. By Sunday evening, The Hunger Games will have surpassed Dark of the Moon, »

Lord Of The Rings Battle Named Top Rain Scene

18 April 2012 3:11 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A spectacular battle in The Lord Of The Rings sequel has been hailed as the best rain scene in movie history.

The brutal clash at Helms Deep in 2002's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is one of the fantasy series' standout set pieces, and has come out on top of the poll by U.K DVD rental firm LoveFilm.

The ending of Blade Runner, which features Rutger Hauer's soaking wet character delivering a moving monologue, was in second place, and The Shawshank Redemption's rain-lashed climax came third.

Gene Kelly's toe-tapping dance in Singin' in the Rain twirled into fourth place, with the fearsome fight scene in Matrix Revolutions rounding out the top five. Other notable entries include Hugh Grant and Andie McDowell's kiss in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Tobey Maguire's upside down smooch in Spider-Man. »

Hunger Games Tops Us Box Office Again

8 April 2012 10:10 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

After slaying all comers with whatever weaponry came to hand in a battle to the death, The Hunger Games is still atop the charts, earning an estimated $33.5 million this weekend, pushing its Us total to a hugely impressive $302.8 million so far. Just for context, that's higher than all the Twilight movies to date and all but two Harry Potters. Its eventual total is likely to be higher than The Two Towers and Alice In Wonderland as well.Neither of this weekend’s challengers could match it, though one of them probably isn’t all that worried, given how much it made when it was first released. Second place went to American Reunion, which had hoped to ride a wave of affection for the original movie by reuniting the entire cast. The nostalgia gambit could only wrangle up $21.5 million: not bad, but no cigar. Titanic sailed back into cinemas with a gleaming new 3D conversion paintjob, »

Chucky Wants To Play In ‘Child’s Play’ Remake And Spin-off

30 March 2012 7:11 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

With MGM and Universal having settled their differences over the rights of Don Mancini’s Chucky franchise, we are now getting word that both a remake and spin-off are on the cards. The news comes from the man who has voiced the devilish doll in all five films, and is expected to return for both projects.

Genre favourite Brad Dourif, played killer Charles Lee Ray whose obsession with the occult led to him taking-over the plastic body of the cherub looking ‘Good Guy’ doll, has said that the remake will tell the original tale in a much darker form, with a few unexpected twists along the way.

However, the spin-off will follow more along the lines of the last two comic-themed sequels Bride Of Chucky and Seed Of Chucky, with the focus being on the demonic doll’s immediate family. A working title of Revenge Of Chucky should tell you »

Geek Girl Navigating the World – All of the Rings, All at Once

26 March 2012 4:43 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

I recently spent my St. Patrick’s Day doing one of the geekiest things, ever.  Or at least, the geekiest thing that I’ve ever done that didn’t involve comic books in some form or another. One of my friends got the The Lord of the Rings special expanded edition on Blu-ray and subsequently invited us to come over to watch them.  Naturally, most of us agreed.

We had a couple of weeks to prepare for the marathon, and you’d better believe that we made the most of it.   There was talk about bringing food and carting in stuff to make ourselves more comfortable because we were being pretty realistic about the odds of wanting to get up in the middle of the movies once we’d started watching them.

When The Fellowship of the Ring came out in theaters, I was as excited as anyone would have expected. »

Unobtanium – The Battle for Dune

21 March 2012 8:41 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

March, 2011: After their rights to the source material elapse after a failed four year venture, Paramount officially drop their in-development film Dune, ending a frustrating and ultimately fruitless effort that served better as a topic of heated discussion than an actually feasible movie.

Such an announcement had been on the cards, and the prospect rightly feared for months. Aside from the consensus that Frank Herbert’s epic, 1965 science fiction chef-d’oeuvre will never again make it to the big screen, the proposed project was in a state of flux from the moment it appeared on the radar, with each change of personnel seeing the release date pushed further and further back.

The ‘film’ still has its own page on IMDb, albeit a rather scarce one. There is a name, the year 2014, but no director, no writer, no other entries. Aside from providing a portal to forum conversation about casting and narrative focus, »

Curious Fit at Number Two, but Otherwise Excellent

20 March 2012 10:53 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

This was created by Evan Seitz who last animated the ABCs of Cinema which you can watch right here. This time he tackles the metric system offering up "123Films" featuring 13 pieces of cinema represented by a short animation and sound bite. It's far easier than the ABCs edition, and I don't really why the choice for number two considering the title isn't strictly a two. Kill Bill: Volume Two or Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers probably would have worked a bit better. And you could argue the imagery for number seven doesn't exactly fit with the conclusion of the film, but visually I understand what he was going for. Otherwise it's a fun little video. Can you guess all 13? If not I have included the answers on the second page so as not to spoil anything... that is if I got them all right. The 123s of »

Burning Questions: The New Classic Quotes

20 March 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Michael C. here to see if I can blow some of the dust of the all time lists to make room for some new blood.

If you read as much film writing as I do you know one of the most tiresome attitudes one encounters is the rose-colored “they don’t make them like the used to” mindset. This is the Pleasantville way of seeing things that insists cinema attained a sort of perfection in the forties and fifties and has been on a downhill slide towards Transformers sequels ever since.

One of the most common forms this viewpoint takes is the lament that movies aren’t as quotable as they used to be. "Why, when the American Film Institute released its list of the 100 greatest quotes in 2005" the argument goes, "Casablanca landed six spots on the list alone, while Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz landed three apiece. »

Peter Jackson/The Hobbit Behind-the-Scenes Video

1 March 2012 6:18 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Peter Jackson In his latest The Hobbit vlog/video blog, Peter Jackson explains that location shooting on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and its sequel The Hobbit: There and Back Again has been just about completed. When Jackson is asked why it took him and his crew 127 days to shoot two movies, while the three Lord of the Rings movies were shot in 133 days, Jackson came up with some sound reasoning: "We're all ten years older, so we're going a little slower." Looking at the behind-the-scenes preparations for the shoot, The Hobbit's filmmakers, actors, and crew deserve at least an "A" for effort. About ten years ago, Jackson had three consecutive blockbusters with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), and Best Picture and Best Director Academy Award winner The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Amazon Gold Box Blu-ray Deal: "Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition" for $50

26 February 2012 7:29 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

I suppose today's Gold Box deal over at Amazon makes sense considering tonight will be dominated by the Academy Awards, and there's never been a trilogy to soak up more nominations and wins at the Oscars than Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King). Better yet, any fan can tell you there's only one Blu-ray set of the trilogy worth buying, and that's the Extended Version, which is exactly what Amazon has up on the block today. As a proud owner of the set myself, there are few Blu-ray box sets as expansive as this, and for a full breakdown of what's inside we've included the stats below.

It's available today for only $49.49 at Amazon (normally about $75-$80 at most retailers).

'Phantom Menace' will eclipse 'Dark Knight' grosses -- Is Top 10 quality going down like the 'Titanic'?

24 February 2012 10:42 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

News broke today that Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace, thanks to its recent 3-D re-release, is on track to surpass 2008′s The Dark Knight in box office grosses. This infusion of money will make Phantom Menace the 10th highest-grossing film of all time. Many would argue that Christopher Nolan’s twisty Batman Begins sequel is far superior to George Lucas’ uncontrollable exercise in CGI, and it got us thinking: Are the newest crop of movies to join the top 10 (six since Avatar kick-started a box office frenzy in 2009) demonstrably worse than their chart-mates? Well… yes and no. See the new top 10 list below. »

Oscar Predictions: Best Visual Effects

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" won visual effects in a visual effects-driven feature motion picture at the 10th annual Visual Effects Society Awards. Seven of the nine winners of this prize went on to claim the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.  Two of its Oscars rival were in that race  -- "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" -- while another, "Hugo," which the supporting visual effects award. The fifth Oscar contender -- "Real Steel" -- was snubbed by the Ves.  The motion capture used in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is similar to the technique used in "King Kong" which won this Oscar race in 2005. Andy Serkis played a primate in both films and also appeared in digitally enhanced form in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Joe Letteri won for two of those three films -- "The Two Towers »

Culture Warrior: The Importance of Honoring Motion Capture Performances

14 February 2012 8:00 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The performance was so compelling, and the digital handiwork so real, that critics believed it would be a huge oversight if the Academy didn’t find a way to recognize this historical milestone. Audiences were compelled and engrossed with a CGI creature whose features and expressions were so detailed that he seemed to integrate seamlessly with his flesh-and-blood cohorts on the silver screen, occasionally even going so far as surpassing them in terms of the quality of his performance. The character was Gollum, the film was The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and the performer was a talented but then little-known British actor named Andy Serkis. Almost a decade since, Serkis has since found his rightful place as the premier motion capture performer working in Hollywood, but he is still yet to be recognized by the Academy for his work. I imagine that the debates over his snub for Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes will »
