I had to do a heck of a lot of digging through "Scooby Doo" entries to find this one. I hadn't remembered its name, but felt inclined to comment on it, after seeing a couple of remarks about the live-action Scooby movie.
I saw this one 2-3 years ago & thought it was very well-done & quite faithful to the original cartoon--which I grew up with and dearly loved.
One reviewer of the live movie remarked that the real ghosts were a nice change from the old formula of the cartoon. Other reviewers, though, slashed it for the same reason. I personally found it refreshing in both Zombie Island & the Geller-Prinz flick to have something other than "Old Hank" in a bed sheet scaring off tourists.
Don't get me wrong: I loved the original show & cherish it very much. Let's face facts, though. The very introduction of the irritating, nauseating Scrappy Doo was really an admission that the salad days were over & the premise worn out. Hanna-Barbara could have either retired the series or tried to pump fresh life into it with a new character. Sadly (oh so sadly!!!) they chose the latter. I would compare that with NBC keeping Seinfeld on the air one more year & moving the cast to a desert island inhabited by Paul Lynde (playing the practical-joking warlock "Uncle Arthur") for the final season. Let a great show die!
In any case, the real ghosts in Zombie Island were very refreshing, as was the uniquely modern animation. I thoroughly enjoyed Zombie Island and found it quite interesting that the real-life Scooby plot seemed suspiciously similar (i.e., the group breaking up, then being reunited & finding a real ghost for once).
I would strongly recommend this one to any Scooby fans.
