Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies. Titular allegiance aside, this sphere includes non-Marvel properties.
This week: Instead of re-hashing stuff we’ll be talking about for years, this week we’re going to talk about Spawn and black superheroes in their own movies.
There comes a time when examining mainstream media where one runs across a race issue or two. Or seven. Or two-dozen. I’m not sure how much weight to put on the race part of this week’s discussion, but I’m fairly sure talking about it won’t hurt anyone. So let’s talk about Jamie Foxx and Spawn.
Several people and outlets have put together recent comments made by Jamie Foxx about roles he’d like to play with Spawn-creator Todd MacFarlane’s ongoing insistence he’d like to reboot his character into a...

Subject: Mark Wahlberg, 39-year old American actor, producer, and former bad-boy rapper
Date of Assessment: December 10, 2010
Positive Buzzwords: Ensemble, directors, rawness
Negative Buzzwords: Wooden, lead roles, Marky Mark
The Case: For awhile there (up until the past few years, actually), it appeared as if Mark Wahlberg had proved 'em all wrong. During his very early showbiz career, he was forced to endure the title of Least-Known Wahlberg Brother, and many in the (now virtually shuttered) music business presumed that Marky Mark had made a fatal career move by ditching his pre-fame position within New Kids On The Block. Yet following a very brief rapping career, Mark Wahlberg really hit the big time by showing off his Calvins. Shortly thereafter, Mark made a surprisingly impressive acting splash alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Basketball Diaries, not to mention his portrayal of the creeptastic villain who seduces a young Reese Witherspoon in Fear and...

The only man in Hollywood busier than Ridley Scott must be Uwe Boll, who has had a videogame-to-film adaptation in theaters or on DVD every twelve minutes since House of the Dead. But word on the streets from Fantastic Fest was that his latest, Rampage, was actually quite good (and not based on any previously existing properties).
Now comes the trailer for his next, a little moody film called Storm, or Final Storm, written by Tim McGregor. The film stars Dumb and Dumber’s Lauren Holly and a back-from-the-abyss Luke Perry, and describes itself via this lengthy (and spoiler-heavy) synopsis:
“Biblical rain, dying animals and a blood red moon. Clearly, all is not well on the quiet farm in the countryside where Tom makes a living with his wife Gillian and their young son Graham. Before the cable and power goes out, glimpses of weather related catastrophes on a global scale are hinted upon.

Lightning rod of creativity Uwe Boll has tapped former sideburns-wearer Luke Perry to star in his newest masterpiece The Storm. The Storm, so says a press release, is about a devastating storm. Forgive us for waxing nostalgic, but we remember a time when we couldn’t go into a girl’s bedroom without Tiger Beat cut-outs of Mr. Perry festooned on every corner. Okay....we’re making that up. We never made it as far as their bedroom. Unless you count our cousin Mindy in Scarsdale, but let’s not get into that story right now. But the point is, Perry used to be King. And now he’s working with Uwe Boll. Perry’s co-star will be Lauren Holly, whose credits include The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Down Periscope and the heavily acronymed NCIS. While we applaud Herr Boll for branching out from his video game roots, something tells...

Uwe Boll is to take a break from adapting every video game property he can get his hands on, to make an apocalyptic thriller called The Storm, starring Lauren Holly and Luke Perry. Holly, having previously lent her talents to Dumb and Dumber, The Chumscrubber and What Women Want, has been flying below the radar for some time now (a stint on NCIS better left forgotten). Beverly Hills 90210 grauate Perry, has appeared in such movie classics as Fogbound and Dishdogz but is curently making waves in the surf/bible hybrid series John From Cincinnati. The not-at-all-like-a-video-game plot follows a woman who must face up to the world's impending doom, when she meets a mysterious man called Silas who seems to hold the key. Unlikely to near the grand scale of The Day After Tomorrow with its $5 million budget, the movie is nonetheless shooting in Vancouver for a 2009 release.
