September is nearly upon us, which means that Netflix will be adding a whole host of new movies and TV shows to their content library on the first day of the month, as they continue to assert their dominance over the competition in the streaming wars. If anything, the company could do with the focus shifting to pre-existing titles after finding themselves in the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently.
As well as the huge backlash that greeted the controversial first poster for French coming-of-age drama Cuties, Netflix drew criticism after canceling popular shows I Am Not Okay With This and The Society despite previously announcing that both had been renewed for second seasons, while Altered Carbon was also axed in what looks to be just the latest in a long line of cost-cutting measures.

September marks the start of the traditional TV season. For many networks and cable channels, however, this will be an usual season with the coronavirus pandemic halting production leaving behind paltry fall lineups. Over on Netflix, however, things continue to operate at high capacity.
Netflix is rolling out quite a few original series and movies for its new releases in September 2020. The Hillary Swank-starring space drama Away premieres on September 4. That is followed by a whole host of intriguing concepts including Julie and the Phantoms (Sept. 10), Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Sept. 18), and even the Nurse Ratched origin story series called Ratched (Sept. 18).
The film side of things is just as packed. Romantic comedy Love, Guaranteed premieres on Sept. 3, Charlie Kaufman’s latest effort I’m Thinking of Ending Things arrives on Sept. 4, and the Tom Holland-starring thriller The Devil All the Time bows on Sept. 16. That’s not even to mention Enola Holmes on Sept.

Fox Sports has dropped its Usga (United States Golf Association) TV rights, including the U.S. Open. Those now transfer to NBC Sports.
Fox’s hand was kind of forced here by the U.S. Open being delayed until September because of the coronavirus pandemic. That’s when Fox hopes to be airing NFL, college football and Major League Baseball games. Fox’s deal with the Usga was set to go through 2026. Along with the U.S. Open, Fox’s rights also included the U.S. Women’s Open and the Senior Tour.
The move gives NBC rights to two of Golf’s major tournaments, having had the British Open since 2017. The British Open, dubbed The Open Championship, was canceled outright this year because of the pandemic. NBC had previously aired the U.S. Open from 1995-2004. The U.S. Open is scheduled for Sept. 17-20.

Mark Rylance is taking a mulligan on his next project, signing on to play Maurice Flitcroft in a new film called “The Fantastic Flitcrofts” about the man who qualified for the British Open Golf Championship in 1976 and subsequently shot the worst round in Open history.
Craig Roberts will direct the heart-warming true story about the dreamer and unrelenting optimist Flitcroft who became a folk hero after his disastrous performance. Simon Farnaby (“Paddington 2”) is writing the screenplay for “The Fantastic Flitcrofts” based on his book “The Phantom Of the Open” Farnaby co-wrote with Scott Murray.
If you want to know just how bad Flitcroft was, he didn’t have a handicap and instead merely posed as a professional. And when he managed to qualify, he shot a round of 121, or 49 over par. Other pros even demanded a refund of their entry fees for having to play alongside him, and he...

The year is 2020, and we just learned that Tom Brady is human after all. Over Memorial Day weekend, the six-time Super Bowl champion teamed up with Phil Mickelson for a charity golf tournament against Tiger Woods and fellow football legend Peyton Manning, where they raised $20 million for Covid-19 relief efforts. The multifaceted superstar pairings didn't hold back on the trash talk amid the rainy weather in Florida, however, one moment from "The Match" had the internet in awe, and it all started with some heckling at Tom.
After not playing his best round of golf and accepting that he's truly a football star, the quarterback had an insane shot on the seventh hole that miraculously went in. Tom was just as shocked as the millions of viewers, and when he bent down to claim his ball from the hole, his pants split right down the middle. Now maybe Tom's been...

Turner will issue refunds to some customers who shelled out $20 for Friday’s pay per view golf match featuring Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson after a technical problem forced the company to make the event available free via a live stream.
The need to issue refunds adds to the embarrassment for Turner. The company said a glitch with the purchasing infrastructure on its Bleacher Report Live page threatened to keep some customers from watching the event. Rather than have fans angry at missing what proved to be a 22-hole shootout between the golf legends, Turner made the call to take down the paywall and make the live stream available to all for free.
“ ‘The Match’ was an historic event, from Tiger’s opening tee shot to Phil’s final putt. Prior to the start of the event, we experienced a technical issue with the B/R Live paywall page that we tried to quickly resolve.

WarnerMedia and At&T had hoped that Friday’s live pay per view event featuring golf rivals Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson would be a showcase of the enlarged company’s multiplatform programming capabilities.
Instead, the event may prove to be a PR and business debacle. A technical snafu in the streaming function via Turner’s Bleacher Report sports website forced the company to drop the paywall and offer a free live stream to ensure that those who paid $20 for the event would be able to see it at the start time of 3:10 p.m. Et.
“We experienced some technical issues on (Bleacher Report) Live that temporarily impacted user access to ‘The Match,’ ” Turner said in a statement. “We’ve taken a number of steps to resolve the matter, with our main priority being the delivery of content to those that have purchased the PPV event.

The company has secured worldwide media distribution rights to what is being billed as “The Match,” a showdown between two players who have been longtime rivals with a combined 19 major championships. The action over Thanksgiving weekend will be hosted by MGM Resorts at Shadow Creek, a golf course in Las Vegas. The winner will take home $9 million.
Pay-per-view coverage — at rates not yet revealed — will be available through DirecTV, U-verse and Turner’s nascent streaming platform named for its Bleacher Report digital brand, B/R Live. Turner International will handle pay-per-view sales outside the U.S. Related programming about the lead-up to the match is planned on HBO and TNT, with Bleacher Report providing highlights on social media.

The stop-motion geniuses behind Wallace and Gromit are taking us back to the Stone Age with their latest film, Early Man.
The trailer, exclusive to watch on People, introduces fans to a tribe of lovable cavemen from the dawn of time, and features voice work from acclaimed actors like Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston and Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams.
Early Man tells the story of Dug (voiced by Redmayne), a scrawny caveman belonging to a tribe of rabbit hunters, who has big dreams for his fellow cave dwellers. When an evil ruler (voiced by Hiddleston) invades their territory with Bronze Age technology,...

Beauty can be a double edged sword.
Elizabeth had a hell of a week on Madam Secretary Season 3 Episode 13. Not only was she tasked with keeping the peace between Iran and Israel -- a job that seemed akin to herding cats -- but she faced a more existential crisis as well.
While Jay's marital woes were concerning, if not utterly predictable, it was Elizabeth's attempts to define herself rather than letting herself be defined by others that resonated with me.
Obviously, the Iran-Israel peace talk is a Big Deal within the world of Madame Secretary, but it just isn't all that compelling right now. With the Iran story being drawn out for so long, the payoff should be rather extraordinary.
The effect that it's having on Jay's marriage should be more interesting. Jay's a likeable enough guy, the type of guy you want in your office. He carries more than...

Sometimes you just have to get back to basics.
Madam Secretary Season 3 Episode 12 returned to the shows roots by paring down to just two stories, one of which saw the State Department team take a trip to Africa. Henry and Elizabeth both got to do what they do best, with little outside distractions. It was pure bliss.
Elizabeth's mission had pretty low stakes, no matter what Daisy thought. Nobody other than the foreign affairs committee and policy wonks were going to care about the success of that trip. Voters just really don't care about wind farms in Nigeria, even if the Chinese snake the project.
That doesn't make Elizabeth's maneuverings any less impressive. And sometimes getting a win for yourself and your ideals is more important than getting one for the crowd.
Besides it was nice to not have any life or death matters hanging over the teams head for once.

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical School of Rock opened this week on Broadway to some of his best notices in years. Many critics expressed mild relief that he hasn't totally lost his ability to pen a good score, and it's hard to find fault with their disillusionment; Lloyd Webber's flair and reputation for producing (read: monetizing) musical theater has lately outstripped his talent for creating it. But with new earworms to enjoy, we thought it time to take a look at the rest of his oeuvre to see how it compares. Given Lloyd Webber's proclivity for scrapbooking together new and old songs from his catalogue in service of whatever show he's producing at the time, the scores considered for inclusion in this ranking were the most complete and easily accessible versions of each show (e.g., The Beautiful Game instead of its later unrecorded rewriting, The Boys in the...

As the footballer warms up for Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur movie, we score the hits, misses and fouls of other athletes turned actors
Two questions spring to mind following the news that David Beckham has been given a cameo role in Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur movie. Historians will know the answer to the first one. Would it be inaccurate for the knight he plays to strip down to his Y-fronts, disclosing enviable musculature and more than 30 tattoos?
The second question is even more pressing: Do sports stars have anything to offer acting other than short-term capitalisation on their former celebrity in clunking bit parts and fatuous comedy turns? Alan Shearer is a case in point. If you think the Newcastle United and England striker is the last word in wooden on Match of the Day, then you haven’t seen him in the 2000 football movie Purely Belter which,...

Updated With Full List Of Scripts, Writers, And Reps: Catherine The Great, about the rise and life of the famous (sometimes notorious) 18th-Century Russian monarch, was the top vote-getter among 70 scripts chosen for the 2014 Black List of the year’s best un-produced scripts. Each of the 70 screenplays on this 10th annual list was chosen by a group of 250 development executives, agents and other Hollywood insiders as among the year’s best un-produced scripts in a process overseen by Franklin Leonard of http://www.blcklst.com. Anderson’s screenplay received 51 votes.
Other notables in the list include writer/actor/director Kenneth Lonergan with Manchester-By-The-Sea, which is being produced by Matt Damon and Chris Moore. Randall Green had two scripts make the list, The Swimsuit Issue and Cartoon Girl.

Is there really anything more glorious than falling out of bed — perhaps not even your own bed —on a Saturday or Sunday morning, only to go and voluntarily chase a spherical bag of air around an unkempt meadow?
Anyone who has ever played football at a competitive level (and we do use the phrase lightly), will appreciate the full spectrum of joy, exasperation and humiliation that amateur 11-a-side brings with it. Not uncommon are 10-0 scorelines, ten-man brawls and referees who are actually just the opposition’s reserve keeper, a reserve keeper who is actually just one of ‘the dads’.
This footballing version of Inception may appear shambolic to the uneducated eye, but the ordered chaos which envelopes grassroots football is actually a facet integral to its survival. When match officials don’t turn up, for example, you’ll see the absolute best of our utopian little society.

The World Cup is underway, with soccer, marketing and artistry all colliding in various ways. As is the norm, big name talent is recruited by marketing types to make their once-every-four-years promotions shine, and the latest brought into the fold is Diego Luna, who makes most of the opportunity. Not so much a video as a short film inspired by a song, Luna's gone behind the camera for "I Will Never Let You Down (Switch Remix)," Rita Ora's latest jam, featured on the Pepsi sponsored disc Beats Of The Beautiful Game. The short is rather lovely, documenting the very real 60 and over soccer league in Mexico City, Liga de Interclubes de Fútbol Soccer Amateur, that brings together men and women to continue playing the game they love. It's pretty great stuff, and if you're dying to hear that Ora song, it plays over the end credits. Give it all a look below.

The Fault in Our Stars is the latest Young Adult fiction book to find success on the big screen, but there's something distinctly different about this box office smash. Firstly, it doesn't have a fantasy/sc-fi hook like Twilight, The Hunger Games or Divergent, and secondly its author is a man.
In a genre dominated by Jk Rowling, Stephenie Meyer and Suzanne Collins, Tfios scribe John sticks out like a teenager strolling around with an unlit cigarette. Who is this latest literary sensation? We deliver all you need to know about John Green below...
The Fault in Our Stars was inspired by Green's time as a student chaplain...
Before he became a best-selling author, Green had intended to become an Episcopal priest and spent five months as a student chaplain at a children's hospital. It was there he met children suffering from terminal illnesses and decided to become an author instead.

Today the 2014 World Cup kicks off in São Paulo, and to celebrate the greatest sporting event in the world we are watching this incredible video by filmmaker and artist Richard Swarbrick, who takes the term "The Beautiful Game" literally. He has animated famous World Cup goals in a painterly, impressionistic style. The results are breathtaking. Is it strictly geeky? No, but we have to tip our hats to such a talented artist. You can check out more of his work here, including a fantastic (and geeky!) Doctor Who 50th Anniversary animation from Swarbrick.

The beautiful game? For FIFA 14, it’s more like the familiar game, after it was revealed by Eurogamer that this year’s iteration of EA’s mega franchise for the PlayStation Vita will be based on the same engine as FIFA 13. In an interview following their Gamescom briefing, the company’s executive producer David Rutter has stated that the upcoming port features the same, replicated gameplay.
Here’s what Rutter had to say about the Vita version of FIFA 14:
“There will be a Vita version, and it’ll be the same great gameplay. It’s the same great gameplay and new kits.”
This issue was initially raised when the FIFA franchise made its debut on Sony’s handheld, after it was discovered that FIFA 13 was essentially a reskin of FIFA Football – itself a sub-standard launch title for the Vita modelled on FIFA 11’s gameplay engine. Not only that, FIFA...

Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, much of that can be attributed to the global growth of the sport. The world’s game has an immense ability to unite people of all backgrounds and every four years, we gather around the television to partake in the spectacle known simply as the World Cup: rich, poor, young, old, men, women – all flock to the game in a way that surprises many but divides few.
However, has this wonderful sport suffered as of late?
With all of the negative press, I too must confess that the beautiful game is losing some of its luster. As fans, we must work to salvage and preserve the image of the sport we all love, or else face further negative backlash from external bodies or an implosion within the heart of the game.

For a lot people, reading this preview won’t sway your opinion/obsession in the slightest or deter you from devoting a good portion of the next 12 months to mastering FIFA 13. It is a franchise with such large, fanatical support that immense profits for EA are a foregone conclusion every year. The great thing is that EA loves you guys too. They appreciate, they listen and they innovate. I must admit that Pes used to be the disc most likely to burn out due to over-use in my PS3, but that changed with last season’s FIFA instalment. The beautiful game rendered so painstakingly in the greatest football game ever, FIFA 12.

"Not going is a kick to you and to football fans everywhere!" Maybe it should be British Trailer Sunday, as we've got an official UK trailer for a film titled Will coming straight from England. It stars youngster Perry Eggleton as Will, Liverpool Fc's "biggest fan", whose estranged father shows up with tickets to the 2005 Champions League Final but through events unseen, he must run off on a journey of his own to make it to the game. The cast includes a few other names, like Bob Hoskins and Damian Lewis, who you might recognize from The Escapist or Your Highness. This looks typically inspirational, but actually entertaining. Watch the official UK trailer for Ellen Perry's family drama Will, embedded from YouTube: 11-year-old Will Brennan is Liverpool Fc's biggest fan. At a boys' school in England, Will's knowledge and love of The Beautiful Game even outshines his football-obsessed mates.

Earlier today, the World Cup match between Ivory Coast and Portugal ended in a scoreless draw. Coincidentally, we’ve also got a stalemate involving Portugal team captain Cristiano Ronaldo at PopWatch HQ: Is he hotter in the pictured ad for Emporio Armani Underwear or Armani Jeans? EW.com photo editor Connie Yu prefers the former: “I vote underwear, because when I look at the jean one I don’t see abs and hotness, I see eyebrows sculpted to an inch of their life.” I, however, am a bigger fan of the latter. His thighs somehow look sexier with denim clinging to them.
