Leading Chinese film director Chen Kaige is poised to shoot historical epic “Swan Song” as his next feature movie. It will focus on 18th century classical music composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky through critical failure, persecution for his sexuality and a mysterious death during the strife of the soon-to-collapse Russian Empire.
Moonstone Entertainment will launch pre-sales on the film at Cannes later this month. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2024 and early 2025 in the Baltics.
“Swan Song” was written by Shahar Stroh, who will also produce alongside Moonstone principal Etchie Stroh. Corporate credits go Moonstone Entertainment and Strohberry Films.
“The story of ‘Swan Song’ goes beyond the music of one man. It is about the perpetual struggle of beauty and love against darkness and hate, and I am excited to be bringing it to a global audience,” said Chen in prepared comments. “Creating a visually stunning and compelling story, paired with Tchaikovsky’s timeless music,...

Before inventing the “Heroic Bloodshed” genre in the 80’s, with films that shaped action cinema for decades, like “A Better Tomorrow” and “The Killer”, John Woo was directing martial-arts films for the two biggest studios in Hong Kong, Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest, under the guidance of the great Chang Cheh. “Last Hurrah for Chivalry” in particular, was a testament to both his past, as the film functions as a tribute to his mentor, and his future, as one of the most important elements of the “Heroic Bloodshed”, male friendship/comradeship also has a central role here. Lastly, the main character Tsing Yi is an inspiration taken from the real-life assassin Jing Ke, who is historically remembered for his failed assassination attempt of Qin Shi Huang, and has “loaned” his story to a number of movies, including “The Emperor and the Assassin” and “Hero”.

Interview with Wang Chao: “The film seems like a last salute to nature, a last gaze with melancholy”
Wang Chao is a Chinese film director and screenwriter, sometimes considered part of the loosely defined “sixth generation. After graduating, he worked for a number of years as a factory worker. In 1994 he received his university diploma from the Beijing film academy. From 1995 to 1998 he was the assistant to the film director Chen Kaige, working with the elder director on epics like Farewell My Concubine and The Emperor and the Assassin. At this time, he was also a cinema critic specializing in foreign films and he began to write fiction including several short stories and novellas, one of which would later go on to serve as the basis of Wang’s directorial debut, The Orphan of Anyang.
With Orphan, Wang Chao would begin what was the first film of a trilogy of films based on modern life in China. He completed the trilogy with 2004’s Day and Night and 2006’s Luxury Car.

There's no doubting the stature of Chinese master directors Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige. These two stalwarts of the Fifith Generation of Chinese filmmakers burst onto the cinematic landscape with 20th century-set films Red Sorghum and Farewell My Concubine respectively. But arguably they are best known in the West for their martial arts costume epics Hero and House of Flying Daggers (Zhang) and The Emperor and the Assassin and The Promise (Chen). Both men are back playing in the period piece sandbox with two films at Toronto -- Zhang's Shadow and the all new director's cut of Chen's Legend of the Demon Cat. It's great to see the masters back at it. But perhaps it's most notable that the films share both some remarkable differences -- and...

For many mainstream filmgoers, Farewell My Concubine is perhaps the best-known Chinese language film of the 1990s, helped in no end by its success at the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Chen Kaige (Yellow Earth, Temptress Moon), the film traces the troubled friendship between two Peking Opera performers during 50 years of war-ravaged Chinese history. Leslie Cheung (A Better Tomorrow, Days Of Being Wild) and Zhang Fengyi (The Emperor And The Assassin, Red Cliff) play the central duo Dieyi and Xiaolou, while Gong Li (Red Sorghum, Raise The Red Lantern) portrays Jiuxian, the former prostitute who drives them apart. Beginning in 1924, Farewell My Concubine follows a country in turmoil, from the Japanese occupation, through the resistance movement by the Kuomintang and ultimately the...

Chinese director Chen Kaige is a veteran filmmaker and no stranger to U.S. fans of foreign language cinema. He’s been directing features since 1985 and even scored two Oscar nominations for his 1993 film, Farewell My Concubine. His career since has been somewhat eclectic with the standouts being a handful of epic period pieces (The Emperor and the Assassin, The Promise, Sacrifice) filled with martial arts, doomed romance, and gorgeous visuals. The less said about his singular foray into Hollywood the better. His latest film sees a young woman lost in her own issues unknowingly cause an incident that rattles the fragile social mores of those around her. Her transgression goes viral, streaming across the airwaves and internet, and while it marks her as a pariah, it also sets in motion a chain of events in the lives of several other people. A single act, a multitude of ramifications. Caught In the Web races into the present...

Striking an awkward balance between cornball message-making melodrama and kooky mistaken-circumstance comedy, Caught in the Web finds director Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine, The Emperor and the Assassin) vainly stumbling about in search of a tone or point.
In this increasingly muddled tale, secretary Ye (Gao Yuanyuan) learns that she has fatal (albeit asymptomatic) cancer, which leads her to grumpily refuse to vacate a city bus seat for an elderly passenger. This incident is caught on cell phone camera by a fledgling reporter (Wang Luodan), thereby turning Ye into a viral video villain and sparking all sorts of complications involving her corporate-bigwig boss Shen (Wang Xueqi), his wife (Chen Hong), a TV news producer (Yao Chen), and a jaded reporter (M...

You know, about five years ago, you would look at a movie like Chen Kaige’s “Caught in the Web” and think, “Man, that could never happen in real life! What a crazy idea for a movie!” Nowadays, all it really takes is one major website to pimp a story, and it goes viral faster than you can snap your fingers. (Okay, maybe not that fast. In a day or so, anyway.) Forget about truth, or context. Pick a viral video, slap on your spin, and voila, a million people will fall right in line propagating your spin. It’s no wonder that half of these stories end up being hoaxes, they’re That easy to fake. “Caught in the Web” looks and feels like an odd offering from director Chen Kaige. This is the guy who gave us martial arts epics like “The Emperor and the Assassin”, “The Promise...
