  • The title "10 Things I Hate About You" sounds remotely like "Taming Of The Shrew" (on which this film is based).

  • Several names reflect the Shakespearean origin of the story. Bianca's and Kat's last name is Stratford (William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon). Patrick's last name is Verona (birthplace of Petruchio, the corresponding character from the play). The high school is called Padua, which is the city in which the play is set.

  • Larisa Oleynik and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also date each other in "3rd Rock from the Sun" (1996), as Tommy and Alissa.

  • Julia Stiles originally auditioned for the role of Bianca Stratford.

  • Michael says, "Sweet love, renew thy force," which is a line from Shakespeare's Sonnet 56.

  • School used in film is Stadium High School, Tacoma, Washington. The school was first built as a grand, chateau-style railroad station hotel but after it suffered fire damage, was renovated into a high school.

  • Cameron says, "I burn, I pine, I perish," a direct quote from Taming of The Shrew.

  • There is a poster on the wall of Kat's room advertising the band called The Gits whose lead singer Mia Zapata was killed in Seattle in 1993. This goes along with Kat's liking of bands like Bikini Kill and The Raincoats.

  • One of the taglines for this movie is "How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways" which is an obvious play on "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Although this movie contains multiple references to William Shakespeare and "The Taming of the Shrew", the line "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways" was written not by Shakespeare, but by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It is the first line of Sonnet 43 from Barrett Browning's "Sonnets from the Portuguese"

  • The marching band in the sequence where Heath Ledger sings to Julia Stiles was not from Stadium High School, where the film was shot. Stadium was approached by the makers of the movie to do the scene, but did not have a marching band. The makers of the movie then contacted Lincoln High School, a nearby Tacoma school, who furnished the marching band depicted in the scene. Several members of the Stadium Band assisted, but had to be taught how to march.

  • The original script was much darker to the one in the final film. In the original, Mandella (Kat's best friend) referred openly and frequently to several suicide attempts, which were for her to join with William Shakespeare.

  • Kat Straford is excited she got into Sarah Lawrence College. In reality, Larisa Oleynik who played Bianca Stratford really went to Sarah Lawrence College.

  • One of the books clearly seen in the bookshop scene with Kat and Patrick is entitled: "10 Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up Their Lives"

  • The song lyric "cruel to be kind" is a reference to a line from the play Hamlet; another of William Shakespeare's works.

  • The paint ball area was shot at Seattle's Gasworks park on the edge of Lake Union, normally a family park and picnic area.

  • The original song scripted for Patrick to sing to Kat to gain her forgiveness was "I Think I Love You" by 'the Partridge Family'.

  • Despite playing her older sister by nearly 2 years, Julia Stiles is actually only three months older than Larisa Oleynik.

  • After Michael is nearly hit by Kat he refers to her as "the shrew" a reference back to The Taming of the Shrew.

  • The student Patrick pays off in the hallway is the actual leader of the Lincoln High School marching band mentioned above. The same band is depicted in the marching scene and also recorded the song Patrick sings to.

  • Cameron's name, Cameron James, is a play on the name of a famous director, James Cameron.

  • At the end of the movie when Kat shares her sonnet, she describes 10 things she hates about Patrick though the number of items listed is up to interpretation.

  • The large sculpture in the background in the scene where Cameron approaches Bianca for help is not a set piece, but an actual mixed media sculpture known as the Fremont Troll, The Troll or The Troll Under the Bridge. Its location is under the north end of the Aurora Bridge.
