It's snow time
Van Beuren cartoons are extremely variable, especially in the number of gags and whether the absurdist humour shines through enough (sometimes it does, other times it doesn't), but are strangely interesting. Although they are often poorly animated with barely existent stories and less than compelling lead characters, they are also often outstandingly scored, there can be some fun support characters and some are well-timed and amusing.
'Snow Time' may not be a great cartoon and skating and skiing has rarely been this bizarre, but part of me had a quite fun time watching it while finding a fair share of faults. As far as Aesop's Fables/Van Beuren cartoons go, 'Snow Time' is somewhere around the high middle, it is definitely one of the more watchable efforts.
As said, 'Snow Time' is very easy to criticise. The animation is not good, in fact it is downright bad most of the time with erratically sloppy character designs in particular while the simplistic background detail and lack of fluidity and crispness are just as difficult to ignore. The sound can be muffled.
The first half of 'Snow Time' is virtually plot less, a bit too saccharine at times for me and doesn't have the energy of the second half or much memorable about the characters. The cartoon is somewhat disjointed, a case of two quite mismatched halves and one better than the other. It also tends to feel very random and looking for sense is a lost cause, have come to expect that from Van Beuren now.
Luckily, the second half where something resembling a story, even though it is still slight and very formulaic, kicks in and it is more energetic. The cat is a fun character with a personality.
For an Aesop's Fables/Van Beuren cartoon, 'Snow Time' is surprisingly amusing, if never quite reaching hilarious level. There are more gags than usual, and not only do all just about work they are true to Van Beuren's characteristic (when done right, sadly there are too many instances of it not working) absurdist style and amusingly bizarre.
Best of all, and the only outstanding asset, is the music score, it is typically peppy and great fun to listen to. It is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and full of lively energy, doing so well with enhancing the action.
Overall, watchable. 5/10 Bethany Cox
