Mother and Child
Opens: 2010
Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington
Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.
The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not

The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series

What are the best music videos of the noughties?

Let us know your favourite pop promos of the decade
What makes a great pop video? Explosive action? Mind-bending animation? Bling? Bottles of Cristal? Being ripped off in the latest TV advert? One viewer's masterpiece is another's dross, and they will never agree.
And there are simply more videos now than there used to be. In the 70s and 80s, quality videos stood out because there wasn't much else around – Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Jacko's Thriller and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer were events. Now videos cram every corner of YouTube, blogs and TV channels from Viva to MTV.
In the noughties, having a director for your video wasn't enough – they had to be a big name. Hype Williams was one of the busiest, shooting videos such as Kanye West's Gold Digger and Stronger, Beyoncé's Check on It and Coldplay's Viva La Vida. Other directors such as Mark Romanek

Producer Dan "Sherlock Holmes" Lin continues to develop his big screen reboot of "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider", adapting the Eidos video game franchise starring action hero 'Lara Croft'.
Designed by Toby Gard, the Lara Croft video game character has been featured in movies, comic books, novels and animated short films, presented as a resourceful, athletic and reckless Englishwoman of noble birth who travels the world in pursuit of priceless antiquities.
Lara frequently ventures into ancient and often hazardous tombs, ruins, traps and puzzles, encountering a variety of enemies including gangsters, prehistoric animals, legendary creatures and supernatural beings.
The cornerstone of a multi-million dollar franchise, Paramount previously produced two 'Lara Croft' movies starring Angelina Jolie.
Screen rights recently reverted to Eidos, the games company that was, in turn purchased by Japanese publisher Square Enix for $120 million.
Lin will produce the film through his Lin Pictures with co-producer Stephen Gilchrist, reimagining the origins of a younger character,

Jolie Turns Journalist To Help Darfur

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has swapped acting for journalism to urge U.S. President Barack Obama to step up efforts to resolve the Darfur crisis.
The Tomb Raider actress has written an article for America's Newsweek magazine on the plight of refugees in the war-ravaged Sudan region.
Jolie, who is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations (U.N) refugee agency, put pen to paper to mark Human Rights Day on 10 December and took the opportunity to address the Obama administration, urging the government to intervene in Darfur.
She writes, "Like many Americans, I support the administration's willingness to engage diplomatically, even with regimes we abhor. I believe President Obama (and his government) will do their best to bring peace to the region. Their policy, though, raises a number of questions. How is the Obama administration's approach to Sudan an evolution of justice? In addition, when the administration says it intends to work to 'improve the lives of the people of Darfur,' I would like to know what that means, besides the obvious point that their lives could hardly get worse.
"On this Human Rights Day - the same day President Obama receives his Nobel Peace Prize - we must also remember those who have been deprived of their rights. Holding perpetrators of mass atrocities accountable is the best way to ensure justice today and peace in the future. Sudan is the place to start."

Gears Of War: The Movie?

Game to film adaptations are notorious for being shit. From complete wastes of money (Tomb Raider). To the downright depressing (Street Fighter). To what the hell were they thinking? (Super Mario Bros).
Now with Bioshock deemed way too expensive and nobody having the collateral to support Halo the world turns to Gears Of War to break the trend.
It would be way to easy to make Gears Of War as a straight-up action film. The game essentially consists of killing one group of aliens after another. The plot is paper-thin but that’s what makes the game so enjoyable. It seems producer Wyck Godfrey wants a bit more depth than that and is currently talking about the potential of the film as an origins story.
He is very keen to focus on a time hinted at in the game known as “Emergence Day”. This term refers to the beginning of

Charitable star Angelina Jolie has been quietly paying for education and food for seven children in Jordan - and is now considering buying them a home.
The Tomb Raider star, who has six kids of her own, sparked speculation she's planning to adopt after visiting an orphanage in the Middle East but workers later explained she and partner Brad Pitt were visiting the children she sponsors.
According to staff at Sos Children's Village in Amman, Jordan, Jolie became guardian to the three girls and four boys in 2003 and has been providing them with food and clothing ever since.
An insider explains, "Angelina considers the orphans as her own family. She stays in touch with them and really cares about how they're doing. She and Brad both feel this is a way they can help many more children."
And Sos employee Aysha Shahin adds that the kind-hearted actress may even be investing in a home for the family to live in.
She says, "Angelina will definitely support us by visiting again, possibly even sponsoring a house which will pay the children's expenses. She's a sweetheart, and one of our greatest supporters."
Jolie has three adopted children, two boys from Asia - Maddox and Pax, and a daughter, Zahara, from Africa, as well as three biological kids with Pitt - Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne.

Exclusive: Nicolas Cage Wants To Know If You've Heard Anything About 'Ghost Rider 2'

From Splash Page: Nicolas Cage’s 2007 hit “Ghost Rider” may have made $115 million, but two years later it seems to be existing in that same state of Hollywood limbo as barely-blockbusters like “The Sum of All Fears,” “Hairspray,” or “The Italian Job” — sequel rumors pop up, but there’s some doubt whether one would cement a bigger “Bourne”-like box-office increase, or a “Tomb Raider”-esque over-anticipation of demand. And despite reports of movement on David Goyer's "Ghost Rider" sequel script, Cage says he’s the wrong person to ask these days for updates.
“You probably know more about it then I do,” laughed the veteran actor when asked about the project. “What have you read?"
Cage said he hadn’t heard anything about Goyer's sequel — which is set 10 years after the first film — and is afraid to comment on his future with the character these days.

Reliance Big Entertainment and Brad Pitt's Plan B are in the process of developing a film version of the yet to be released video game, Dark Void. Pitt is hinted to star as the lead assailant.
They have picked up the rights to Capcom's third person shooter in order to develop it as a potential star vehicle for Pitt, who is also the lead role in another upcoming Plan B release, the fifth Terrence Malick feature, Tree of Life. The two companies have yet to find writers to pen the Dark Void script.
The story of Void follows a cargo pilot named Will who ends up in a parallel universe after crashing in the Bermuda triangle. ‘Conan’ Screenwriters Map Out ‘Uncharted’ Movie

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and its recent sequel are great adventure videogames that springboard off of Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider, with much more fluidity and cinematic flair than we’re usually accustomed to in gameplay. That said — it’s a videogame, and like all videogames, it will shine most brilliantly as something interactive, while a film will only diminish its value.
Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, the screenwriters behind A Sound of Thunder, the upcoming Conan, and Sahara have been tasked with bringing Uncharted to life on the big screen.
As an adventure film, this has plenty of potential — about as much as it stands to derive many of its qualities from the Indiana Jones franchise. However, that vacuum left by Indy’s last crusade has never been successfully filled by any successors; could Uncharted transcend the usual flaws of videogame adaptations and become a truly great action-adventure franchise?

'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' Adaptation Goes To 'Conan' Writers

I sure do love waking up to video game adaptation news, especially when it's as exciting as the latest update. For anyone who owns a PlayStation 3, one of the few must-own titles is undoubtedly "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" (and now its sequel, "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves"). Great game, in the running-and-jumping-and-climbing-and-shooting vein of the "Tomb Raider" series, with amazing graphics and an overall presentation which feels pulled straight from a Hollywood blockbuster. The story is pure popcorn, with an "Indiana Jones" kind of vibe, a plucky female sidekick and a gang of villains pulled straight from central casting.
News broke over the summer that Sony would be guiding "Uncharted" to a big screen adaptation, with "Hitman 2" (another, as-yet-unreleased game adaptation) writer Kyle Ward delivering a script. Well Ward's now out, according to a report yesterday on Latino Review. Replacing him -- assuming negotiations go well -- are "Conan" reboot writers

What can I say about Sybil Danning that would be a surprise to anyone? Gorgeous, talented, fun to watch. In whatever project she appears, Danning is always completely committed. Watching her as I have over the years, I see not only chops, but a healthy sense of humor as well. I feel like she “gets it,” if that makes any sense. (And after this interview, I’m even more of a fan.) Courtesy of friend Fred Olen Ray, Danning joins all the vampire fun on The Lair in this third season.
Sean Abley: We’ve actually met very briefly—I moderated the Lair panel for the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in La months ago. I was incredibly intimidated by meeting you. You’re Sybil Danning! But you turned out to be very sweet, and even asked me if it went Ok afterwards. You’ve now worked with my friend Dylan Vox twice,

JoBlo has an exclusive look at the "Salt" teaser poster. And it doesn't tell you anything about the movie at all. But, it does tell you that Angelina Jolie is starring in it, and I guess they felt that was enough. She looks sexy as all hell in the picture, but besides that, is using Jolie as the sole selling point really a good idea? I mean, yeah she's been in some action movies that have made bank, but I assure you it wasn't because of her (Examples: "Tomb Raider" is a brand name; "Mr and Mrs. Smith" was marketed as a must see summer movie from the director of Jason Bourne; "Wanted" was also marketed in the same vein). I guess we shall see.For now, just look into those eyes. She will slowly lie you down on a fluffy cloud little boy, and make you into a man.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have turned jewellery designers to launch a collection of accessories benefiting the actress' children's charity.
The Hollywood couple has teamed up with exclusive British jewellers Asprey for a selection of high-end gold and silver pieces inspired by serpents as part of The Protector line.
The range includes diamond-studded pendants and rings, baby spoons and picture frames, all featuring the reptile, and are priced from $525 (£330).
According to Wwd.com, Jolie chose the snake theme after being gifted a ring in the shape of a snake while she was pregnant with the couple's first biological daughter, Shiloh, in 2006.
Proceeds from the Protector range, which is being sold at Asprey stores in London, New York, Los Angeles, Toyko, Japan and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, will be donated to the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, an organisation the Tomb Raider star co-founded in 2006.
In a statement about the charity, the stars say, "These are the children who most need a safe place to learn, a place to heal, a place to learn reconciliation, a place to build a better future and a place - to just be children.
"Yet the education for these children is often forgotten. Tens of millions of children and adolescents in conflict are not in school."
