Aptly named for the acidic smell of deteriorating film, Vinegar Syndrome made an auspicious debut in 2013 with its inaugural release, The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. In the decade since, they have unearthed, restored, and distributed hundreds of cult, exploitation, horror, action, and adult films.
Popping in a new Vinegar Syndrome disc is a bit like cinematic Russian roulette. It’s always interesting, but you never know if you’re going to get an obscure masterpiece, a campy B-movie, a so-bad-it’s-good slice of fun, or a dud. The unknown is half the fun, and discovering those diamonds in the rough makes it worthwhile.
In celebration of their anniversary, I’m highlighting 10 hidden gems from Vinegar Syndrome’s first 10 years.
To narrow the choices, I’m ignoring the heavy hitters like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 and The Amityville Horror, box sets like Forgotten Gialli and Home Grown Horrors,...

Apparently Troma didn’t corner the market in bad taste; at least one film gave them competition in the annals of horror, and that’s The Suckling (1990), a fairly obscure little ditty brought up from the sewers by the fine stewards at Vinegar Syndrome for a fun Blu-ray release.
I say “fairly obscure” because the film did have a hint of notoriety behind it when it was revealed that Fangoria’s own Michael Gingold was one of two men inside the monster suit; The Suckling is also fortunate that it came out in the time before the internet—any movie that seems to come down hard on the side of pro-life would not escape controversy in this day and age.
Monster suits and pro-lifers, you say? Just what the hell is this thing about anyway? I’m glad you asked: we find a woman locked up in an insane asylum,...

Not that there’s been a bad week of home entertainment releases this year, but March 26th is looking to be one of our finest days of 2019 so far, with Mary Lambert’s Pet Sematary adaptation leading the pack as it gets the 4K treatment on Tuesday. Vinegar Syndrome is keeping themselves incredibly busy this week, too, as they have four different cult titles on tap for horror fans to add to their Blu-ray collections: The Children, The Suckling, Dominique, and In the Cold of the Night.
Also this week, Scream Factory is showing some love to The Body Snatcher, which features Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff teaming up with Val Lewton, as well as Warning Sign, and for those of you who dig creature features with a side of creepy-crawliness, Kingdom of the Spiders comes home as well.
Other releases for March 26th include Aquaman, Midnight, Texas: Season Two,...

"He'll always be... mommy's little mutant." In The Suckling, a woman's past comes back to haunt her (quite literally), and Vinegar Syndrome is giving the zany 1989 creature feature (coupled with hearty helpings of horror comedy and social commentary) new life on Blu-ray this March, complete with a 2K restoration.

After being tricked into having an abortion at Big Mama’s underground abortion clinic / brothel, a young woman’s extracted fetus is flushed into the sewer system wherein it’s exposed to toxic waste and begins to mutate into an ever growing and increasingly bloodthirsty monster. The girls, johns and other assorted weirdos find themselves trapped inside the brothel where they are forced to face off against the agitated, prenatal creature, as well as each other,...
