Exclusive photos, director comments: Savage County on-line shocker

10 November 2009 12:11 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Director David Harris sent along some exclusive pics (see them below) from his fright feature Savage County, an MTV production which will be presented in eight 10-minute on-line installments beginning next February. Lensed in Memphis, Tn this past summer, the movie (scripted by Harris and Dan Alvarado) is about a group of high-schoolers who run afoul of a vicious backwoods family, the Hardells.

Savage County is an unabashed homage to vintage rural horrors of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre breed, though Harris notes it has a true-life inspiration as well. “I grew up in Texas,” he tells Fango, “and as a kid, I was 100 percent sure that Chainsaw 1 and 2 were documentaries. We had a big woods near our neighborhood, with a 1800s house and a rambling old man with a shotgun and 100 cats—basically, a slightly less decrepit ‘Grandpa.’ That was the original big scare for me, and there was no »

MTV Enters Episodic Horror With Savage County

5 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

This year, MTV offered up its take on the slasher genre with My Super Psycho Sweet 16 . Now, the network is exploring Savage County , which culls its inspiration from the mad hillbilly sub-genre. Project is going to be rolled out as an eight-episode web series from director David Harris and producers David Gale ( Varsity Blues ) and Craig Brewer ( Hustle and Flow ). Harris shot the film during the summer on hi-def in Memphis, Tennessee. Leading the cast is Mimi Michaels (pictured, Boogeyman 3 ). Savage County is described as a tribute to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with "great indie rock and rockabilly music and a twist of teen drama." Set before prom, a mismatched group of high school kids heads to a remote pond to party. When the beer runs dry, the... »

'Varsity Blues' Doesn't Want Your Life In Today's Sick Day Stash

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that 1999 was a definite turning point in cultural history. The music of '99 was truly excellent (the entire year was soundtracked by Tlc's "No Scrubs," Kid Rock's "Bawitdaba," 702's "Where My Girls At?" and Rage Against the Machine's "Guerilla Radio"), television saw the beginning of its new golden age ("The Sopranos," "Futurama," "SpongeBob Squarepants," "Angel," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "The West Wing" and "WWF Smackdown! »

Blu-ray Capsule Review: Varsity Blues

28 September 2009 11:40 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Varsity Blues Quick Thoughts: I was 22-years-old when Varsity Blues came out and while it's about high school students, the fact the majority of the actors are older or only slightly younger than myself it pretty much fit right into my early-twenties wheelhouse. Partying, playing sports and hot blondes in whipped cream bikinis (wait... what?). I mean, what isn't there for a 22-year-old not to love? Of course, the film is downright cheesy -- "I don't want... your life" -- and if you are going to attempt to take it seriously you have seriously taken a misstep. However, that isn't to say this film is an entire farce. High school football in Texas is a big deal and while I have no idea if they take it as far as Jon Voight's Coach Bud Kilmer takes it, I would be surprised if the majority of goings on in this »

Menacing Movie Monsters: A Scientific Ordering Of Man's Toughest Foes

27 September 2009 6:32 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my, what pussies.  Those beasts of burden might be gorging themselves atop Darwin's food chain, but with a little ingenuity, brawn and gun powder, you could easily defeat the entire Bearenstein Bear family.  Sure, they sound menacing, minacious even, but the lumbering phylum of oafs are mostly passive---like James Van Der Beek in Varsity Blues.  It's all fun and Slaughterhouse V until you shit on Dawson's territory or inject the bear's black friend with chemicals so he can play on an injured knee.  Give me a zombie or a werewolf or at least a reincarnated serial killer doll.  The supernatural may seem an impossible juggernaut, but Dwight Schrute knows how to best these fiends and you should too.  Actually, I can't tell you how to properly slay a ninja or pack of cerebra, but I can tell you which ones to fear the most, »

James Van Der Beek leads the action in this exciting, funny coming-of-age story about a small-town high schooler confronting the pressures and temptations of gridiron glory. At first, backup quarterback Jonathan "Mox" Moxom (Van Der Beek) is nowhere close to being a football star. He's perfectly content to stay on the bench and out of the win-at-all-cost strategies of coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight in a powerful performance). But when the starting quarterback is injured, Mox is in the game. »

America’s Got Talent: A Night of Surprising Results

[brightcoveplayer 35589334001]Defeat can be so bitter, especially for unlucky Mia Boostrom, who, despite a strong performance Tuesday [1], was eliminated for the second year in a row on Wednesday's results show for America's Got Talent. She waged a campaign of not knowing when to quit, but the disappointment showed on her face when the tough call of the night went in favor of Erik and Rickie, a pair of mini professional dancers, who were too cute for words. Whether it was this week's matador number or something simpler, they bring a cool seriousness to the stage. Another standout act came from kids, the bright and shiny EriAm Sisters. They were pulled in right away for a showdown with honky-tonk dark horse Drew Stevyns. Both strong contenders -- EriAm with their cute rainbow socks and Drew with his Varsity Blues buzz-cut -- and neither would be easy to let go. That's when Nick Cannon pulled a fast one. »

In Honor Of 'Orphan,' MTV Salutes The Creepiest Kids In Hollywood

“Orphan.” Whether or not you plan on seeing this fright fest about a girl who terrorizes her newly adoptive parents, one thing is indisputable: that is one freaky lookin’ little girl. The dark, hooded eyes, the thick red ribbon bound across her neck, the do-you-feel-lucky-punk stare—this orphan named Esther is a shining example of the supreme creepitude that some pop culture children exude without saying a word.

In creepiness, if not narrative, "Orphan"'s little orphan Esther comes from a long line of hair-raising fictional youngsters. Here’s our list of the kiddies who, intentionally or not, get the chills running up and down our spines.

Vicki from “Small Wonder”: The unsettlingly cheery intro masks the horror that awaits in this half-hour ‘80s sitcom. The flesh on Vicki’s back pops open to reveal a tangle of wires, batteries, microchips and blinking lights. She’s a robot devoid »

Our Nominees For The ‘Maxim’ Hot 100 List

So we got to thinking — and studiously researching — who wasn’t included among the first ninety gorgeous ladies.

10: Jordanna Brewster. She’s fast, she’s furious and she’s graced their pages with her hotness before. The dark-haired dark horse makes summer even hotter at #10.

9: Gisele Bundchen. Pros: amazingly gorgeous and successful international lingerie supermodel. Cons: already married to the mister wonderful of the sports world, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Her marital vows keep her held down here at #9.

8: Evan Rachel Wood. She may or may not still be in a relationship with Marilyn Manson — I honestly can’t remember or tell anymore. In fact, their status may change between now and Wednesday »

A Lesson Learned: We Love Crazy Bitches

28 April 2009 3:43 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

In an effort to better understand the psyche of the beloved moviegoer, we analyze last week's box office numbers. We found out nobody wants the good girl. America loves a good catfight. Last weekend, America had the chance to watch Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. take a tag team approach to getting an Oscar in The Soloist. We could have even gone green by seeing Earth, where Disney promised to plant a tree for every ticket sold. Instead, and we should have known this was bound to happen, we wanted to watch a mild version of Fatal Attraction in Obsessed. We didn't even get a remake of the whip cream bikini Ali Larter rocked in Varsity Blues. The film was ripped apart by critics, so what gives? Is Beyonce really that fierce? Let's check out the stats and try to find out. This is Beyonce's (who I call Bizunchay for fun) 6th major film release »

"Obsessed" review. Give "Obsessed" credit -- it knows it’s a rip-off of "Fatal Attraction."

"Obsessed" reviewby Mike Digiorgio, Writer                   Give Obsessed credit --  it knows it’s a rip-off of Fatal Attraction and other stalker-themed suspense thrillers, so it doesn’t waste any time setting things up for us.  In fact, within the first minute, I literally figured out exactly how the movie would end.             All the pieces of a movie like this are put into place immediately.  Sharon and Derek (Beyonce Knowles and Idris Elba) move into their new house and check everything out, which is helpful for us in the audience to know exactly which parts of the house will be factors when the stalker inevitably breaks in.  The film quickly establishes that Derek has money and is well-respected and successful at his job – but it doesn’t waste time telling us what he actually does.  It might have to do with finances – they use a lot of words like “prospectus.”              At work, »

The Big Picture Interview with Ali Larter

24 April 2009 3:07 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

After starting out with a whipped cream bikini in Varsity Blues, Ali Larter has appeared in the Final Destination and Resident Evil flicks, plus her starring role on Heroes. But she's always fought for good. The rules have changed for her new movie, Obsessed.

Larter plays a temp who falls for her boss (Idris Elba), only the feeling's not mutual. Having Beyoncé Knowles waiting at home might have something to do with that. The Big Picture talked to Larter about fighting with one of the world's most recognizable women and playing a certifiable lunatic.

Big Picture: Cynically, you could say that characters like Lisa come along fairly often in movies and they all seem to hit similar notes. How did you go about creating something new here, especially since she does kind of have to hit those same notes to meet the audience's expectations?
