New UK Trailer and Quad Poster for Oren Peli’s Chernobyl Diaries

Co-written by Oren Peli, writer-director of overnight horror success story Paranormal Activity, Chernobyl Diaries has been kicking up a bit of a controversy for setting the film in the disaster-struck Chernobyl.

We’ve had the new UK trailer and poster sent over, and if you’re a horror film fan, it looks like this is definitely something you won’t want to miss.

“Chernobyl Diaries” is an original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller “Paranormal Activity.” The film follows a group of six young tourists who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an “extreme tour guide.” Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. Brad Pitt stepped out with a smile this morning to promote Killing Them Softly at the Cannes Film Festival. He joined his costars for the photocall and will hopefully have Angelina Jolie on his arm later today for the world premiere. The movie, which we screened already, showcases a humorous and violent side of Brad, which is just the kind of work that has gotten him some of his highest praises, like Inglourious Basterds and Fight Club. Brad was looking every bit the movie star in his gold sunglasses as he arrived during a brief break in the rain. The weather at the festival has been less than ideal so far, but hopefully it will stay clear tonight for his big red-carpet moment. Former shrill-voiced comedian turned acidic writer/director/satirist Bobcat Goldthwait may just be one of the most simultaneously electric and frustrating indie filmmakers working today. When it comes to deliciously wicked and acerbic premises, there might not be a better conceptualist. A devilishly arch comedic mind, Goldthwait has thus far come up with three succulently mordant, often morally taboo narrative inventions: a girl who tries to repair her relationship after she reveals to her partner she's engaged in sexual acts with her dog ("Sleeping Dogs Lie"); a struggling and untalented author who parlays his son's fake suicide note into a writing career ("World's Greatest Dad") and his latest, "God Bless America," a pitch black societal missive about a disenfranchised man and an all-too-willing and fed-up teenage girl who go on a cross-country killing spree aimed at the shallow, the insipid and the repellently vacuous.

The Darkest Hour takes advantage of the popularity of many end of the world/alien takeover vehicles that have hit lately, and ups the ante somewhat by following a group of survivors who are twenty-somethings as they try to survive the onslaught of invisible invaders.

In an opening act that is a little longer than necessary, we meet our two main characters: Sean (Emile Hirsch) and Ben (Max Minghella) are computer geeks who have created a new App that is sure to be all the rage. They’re on their way to Moscow to close a deal, but things don’t quite work out as planned, and they arrive to find that they’ve had their intellectual property stolen from them… or whatever.

Hitting the Moscow nightlife to drown their sorrows, they meet up with two young American beauties, and the next thing you know, odd lights are appearing in the sky. »

Countdown to Cannes 2012: Killing Them Softly

The number two slot in our most hotly anticipated films of this year’s Cannes film festival goes to Andrew Dominik’s third film – following the excellent Chopper, and the beautifully crafted The Assassination of Jesse James…

Killing Them Softly, which of course was initially called Cogan’s Trade, follows the director’s trend of making crime pictures: adapted from George V Higgins’ classic 1974 crime novel, the film follows Brad Pitt’s enforcer Jackie Cogan who is called upon to clean up after a high-stakes card game is heisted. There is no doubt potential for Driver style stylised hyper-violence, and the tacky rename does imply something more generically crass than we will probably get, but the opportunity to see such a plot through Dominik’s own artistic filter is hugely intriguing.
