Due to a series of misunderstandings, Sir Dennis, Miss Fennell and Malcolm and Beattie all believe, erroneously, that Terry and June have invited them for Christmas dinner and turn up at the house. Sir Dennis gives a speech, boring everybody with his war stories, Miss Fennell gets tiddly and loses the novelty from her cracker and nobody seems to understand Terry's mimes when they play Charades. All in all the Medfords are glad when the day is over.

Despite being a poor golfer, Terry gets roped in for a golfing weekend along with Malcolm and Colonel Culpepper and, whilst he tries to hide in his room, he is eventually forced to play in a foursome. However his cheap golfing equipment falls apart and the Colonel gets so drunk, the game has to be abandoned. June and Beattie on the other hand prove to be expert at the game.

Terry gets a call to say that his late uncle's premium bond, left to him in his will, has won a quarter of a million pounds. After initially wanting to keep his win a secret, he gets drunk at the office and lets it slip, as a result of which he and June are beset by people wanting to share in their fortune. Needless to say his luck does not last, though he does win the first prize in Miss Dunwiddy's raffle.

When June's new cleaning lady, nosey Mrs. Bunce, hears her talking to her daughter Wendy, who is pregnant, Mrs. Bunce's gossip leads to people believing that it is June who is in the family way. To add to the confusion Terry's pet goldfish is also revealed to be pregnant, leading to general misunderstandings before the truth is revealed.

June accompanies Terry on a business trip where, after he has boasted of his Naval exploits, he is talked into taking part in a raft race. He attempts to cheat by attaching the raft to an outboard motor, which breaks down but, although he loses the race, the local positive press coverage ensures that he keeps his job.

Anxious to make Tarquin and Melinda envious when they come to dinner Terry decides to buy a goldfish pond for his back garden. He is so clumsy at the centre selling ponds that he has to pay over sixty pounds in breakages in addition to the twelve pounds for the pond itself. When he has finally installed it he finds that Tarquin and Melinda are not coming round after all.

After a couple of boy scouts and an old lady have tried to help him across the road, Terry fears that he is looking old and adopts a fitness regime, though Sir Dennis suggests that he tries wearing a corset to keep him in as he does. June finds the whole exercise ridiculous and dresses as a punk to show Terry how foolish he is being.

Terry and June agree to go bird-watching with Tarquin and Melinda but Terry, who cannot see the point in the hobby, decides to play a trick on Tarquin. He leaves the hide and imitates the call of a bittern, which leads to Tarquin sailing after it on a raft and falling into the river. The two men argue, which leads to a falling out between their wives.

In the run-up to Christmas Malcolm decides to buy a fur coat as a present for Beattie but wants it to be a surprise for her so he asks Terry to hide it at his house for him. Unfortunately June sees it and assumes that Terry has bought it for her. He then has to find a way to let her down gently in order for them to have a happy Christmas.

After Miss Dunwiddy reports a burglar Terry organizes a Neighbourhood watch Scheme. Though his zeal results in the man across the road catching his wife's lover, he goes ahead with a meeting of local residents. However whilst he is addressing them, a bogus policeman is robbing all their houses - except for the Medfords, which leads to Terry's arrest before the real burglars are caught.
