Extant version is a re-edited re-release of two films: _Jesse James Under the Black Flag_ (1921) and _Jesse James as the Outlaw_ (1921), with narration taking the place of most of the original inter-titles, plus musical accompaniment and sound effects. Each of the two original films has now been shortened to approximately half its original length, the mid-point between the two occurring about thirty minutes into the present film.
