Finals Week: 'Gender Roles in Scary Movies'

Welcome to Finals Week, inspired by real life college finals! We'll have a new academic paper on horror films every day this week!
Gender Roles within Scary Movies by Alex Boles
“What’s your favorite scary movie, Sidney?”
These words haunted American society for at least five years when Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 3 were released in 1996, 1997 and 2000 respectively. At least, the words haunted middle-aged women home alone in their big houses in the middle of nowhere scared to answer the phone at night. The fear and portrayal of women also allowed stereotypes and other characters to form for the future of women roles in scary movies. Sidney, played by Neve Campbell, says at the beginning of the first Scream film after receiving a phone call from one of the killers, that there is no point in watching scary movies because they all display the same representation of women.

Cougar Town and Friends star Courteney Cox is excited about her return to the Scream franchise for the upcoming fourth entry.
The 45-year-old will reprise her role as annoying reporter Gale Weathers in Scream 4. When asked what Gayle and her beau Deputy Dewey (played by real-life husband David Arquette) would be doing since the ending of Scream 3, Cox waxed poetically.
“They’re probably back living in Woodsboro. I think that he’s probably still deputy, and I’ve had a lot of kids,” says Cox. “I don’t know. I’m probably miserable, and then I’m sure a lot of murdering will happen… There are really only a few of us that survived.”
Scream 4 writer Kevin Williamson said earlier this month that he will be adding “twists and turns” the project, which may include killing off long-time characters: “The thing about Scream 4 is that there

Courteney Cox Talks Scream 4

Any news is good news when it comes to Scream 4. With all of the mini updates over the past few weeks, it.s looking more and more certain that we.ll be seeing Scream 4 and potentially Scream 5 and 6 in the near future. Most recently, the AP caught up with Courteney Cox, who spilled her Scream 4 guts. Okay, I wouldn.t go that far. I just wanted to say that.
Cox explained she.s excited to return for the fourth film. She.ll be reprising her role as the uber-abrasive reporter Gale Weathers alongside her husband, David Arquette, in the role of goofy sheriff Dewey Riley. Arquette and Cox met on the set of the first film and were married in 1999, just before the third film hit theaters. Arquette.s character proposes to Cox.s in the end of Scream 3. Joining Cox and Arquette is Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott,

Kevin Williamson to Script Remake of The Bedroom Window Between Screams 4 and 5

We're in the current of a raging river of Kevin Williamson at the moment, with Scream 4 news popping up almost every day and his new TV series The Vampire Diaries - which I've yet to see any of, being in the UK - proving to be a fairly strong performer. It's just like 1998 all over again when Scream 2 was giving way to hype for Scream 3 and Dawson's Creek was clogging up the pages of TV Guide. I'm pretty happy about this comeback myself. I like Williamson and I definitely love Scream.
As well as revving up his own horror franchise for another spin around the block, Williamson has another gig in his datebook. Between completing the Scream 4 script and embarking on the pages for the fifth, he's set to write and direct a remake of Curtis Hanson's The Bedroom Window. Actually, as the film was

Kevin Williamson Talks Influences and Creative Direction for Scream 4: Torture Porn and Twilight?

Over the last few months, it's been revealed that the first entry in the new Scream trilogy, aka Scream 4, is set in Sidney Prescott's hometown roughly a decade after Scream 3. And contrary to old rumors, the first film will not be in 3D. Courtney Cox and David Arquette were signed to reprise their roles from the get-go, and following a prolonged declination, Neve Campbell signed much to the relief of writer/creator, Kevin Williamson. (He had expressed dismay on Twitter at rewriting the trilogy without her). The final puzzle piece, Wes Craven, remains in talks to direct, which is arguably the most important to its success besides the script(s).
But that still leaves doubt as to whether Williamson---who's had renewed Dawson's Creek-like success with the CW's Vampire Diaries---still possesses an irreverent sensibility to update the franchise for a contemporary world of tailspin pop culture and younger,

‘Scream 4′ Goes 3D, Wes Craven Almost Signed On to Direct

Scream 4 is coming and it might be coming in 3D! According to /Film, there is a rumor out there that the latest installment in the popular slasher franchise will be filmed in stereovision. It wouldn’t be the first time that a horror movie has used 3D to enhance its fright factor. One recent example is the abysmal My Bloody Valentine. Ugh. Honestly, if the story sucks, I don’t care if a giant, digitally projected knife is coming at my face. It’s just not scary.
On that note, I’m really hoping Scream 4 brings the franchise back to its roots. When it came out, Scream was critically praised for its clever mix of humor, satire, and genuinely frightening horror. For my money, there hasn’t been a slasher film as good since. Even Scream 2 was pretty awesome, though I don’t want to get into

Rumor Patrol: Wes Craven Will Direct 'Scream IV'

If you were one of the people who thought that another Scream movie was a bad idea (and who could blame you after the train wreck that was Scream 3), there might be a ray of hope...but I have to stress might. Over at Cinema Blend, their 'reliable source' is telling them that the man himself, Wes Craven, will return to direct the latest installment in the horror franchise.
It had been reported that Craven would be involved in some capacity with the film back when the project was first green lit, but you have to wonder what might have convinced him to get behind the camera. Maybe it was all down to nostalgia and he wanted to get together with the old gang, or maybe it was Kevin Williamson's spec script. One thing is for sure, the big empty spot in his schedule since finishing 25/8 probably wouldn't hurt either.

News on The Weinstein.s next installment in the Scream franchise has been trickling out for months. So far we know that Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox are on board to return in some capacity; but just exactly who.s directing this thing has been something of a mystery. Tonight we.ve learned from reliable sources that Wes Craven, who directed all three previous Scream movies, is back at the helm.
In January we heard that Craven might be involved in Scream 4, but wasn.t necessarily directing. Nearly a year later though, the movie.s moving forward, and he.s stepping into the Scream 4 director.s chair.
In the nearly ten years since Scream 3, Craven has kept busy with his usual slate of horror movies. His last blood curdler was the 2005 Rachel McAdams thriller Red Eye and he.s recently completed a serial killer thriller

Craven to Helm 'Scream 4'

It’s official, probably: Wes Craven is returning to the 'Scream' franchise.
Since January, it’s been rumored the legendary director of Scream 1-3 was in negotiations for Scream 4. Craven, who directed Scream 3 back in 2000, more recently helmed the thriller Red Eye, and had a writer’s credit in the 2007 The Hills Have Eyes 2 (which was not exactly a remake of the 1985 film of the same name, which Craven directed).
The 70-year-old auteur was rumored to be involved with Scream 4 in some capacity, but was not necessarily going to be hopping back into the director’s chair. However, according to CinemaBlend, reliable sources have said indicated that Craven will be helming the sequel for the Weinsteins.
Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first and second 'Scream' movies, is serving as writer again. Meanwhile, original 'Scream' trilogy cast members David Arquette, Courteney Cox

Orci and Kurtzman Not Returning To Write Transformers 3

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (The Island, The Legend of Zorro, Mission: Impossible III), after writing the first two, will not be returning to the script duties for “Transformers 3.”
Orci made a post on the Don Murphy forum saying he and Kurtzman won’t be involved with the third film. That means that Ehren Kruger (Scream 3, The Ring, The Ring Two, The Brothers Grimm), who also worked on the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen script, will be going it alone on part three, laboring under the iron fist of director Michael Bay.
Orci wrote,
“He (Ehren Kruger) really did his homework. He’s awesome.”
Director Michael Bay recently confirmed that plans were in motion for a Transformers 3 and that he and actress Megan Fox would be returning.

Ehren Kruger is Sole Writer For "Transformers 3"

Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the dynamic duo who wrote the original "Transfomers", had a little help penning the sequel from a writer who loves the twist endings. This is of course referring to Ehren Kruger who's resume consists of films like "Scream 3", "Arlington Road" and "The Skeleton Key". If you remember, Michael Bay confirmed on his official website that Kruger would be returning to write the third film, but he failed to mention Orci and Kurtzman in his announcement. Turns out, Orici is a frequent contributor on the message board of producer Don Murphy and he announced today that neither he nor Kurtzman would be involved in the script for "Transformers 3". I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news. It's not like the script for the second installment was gold. Anyway, we'll keep you posted.

Though the dynamic writing duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman wrote the first Transformers, for the second one they had a little extra help from Ehren Kruger. Before getting a job on Revenge of the Fallen, Kruger was mostly known for horrible movies like The Skeleton Key and Scream 3. Alright he did have a hand in Blood and Chocolate, but that.s the lone, shame-free spot on his resume.
Unfortunately for the third Transformers film it looks like it.ll be all Kruger, whom Bay confirmed on his official site he.ll soon be collaborating with to talk about new characters. There.s a reason Kurtzman and Orci weren.t mentioned. Roberto is a frequent contributor on the message board of Transformers producer Don Murphy and today he dropped the news that neither he, nor Kurtzman will have any involvement in Transformers 3.
That doesn.t mean, however, that

Neve Campbell will be joining her Scream costars, David Arquette and Courteney Cox, on Scream 4.
Rumors were spreading earlier this year that Campbell, who starred as Sidney Prescott, the main sucker from Scream, Scream 2, When Will I Be Loved and Scream 3, will return to the role that made her a smidgen more famous than when she was just on Party of Five.
Her schedule has freed up since the cancellation of her NBC summer show, The Philanthropist.
Earlier this summer, screenwriter Kevin Williamson suggested that Campbell had said “F*cketh no” for a fourth go on Scream and posted the following on his Twitter page:
Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won’t do it. This sucks. #overdonemovies
Wes Craven is reportedly in talks to helm the project but is awaiting Williamson’s script.

Neve Campbell is set to Scream again - she has signed on to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott in a fourth horror film.
Back in June, it was reported the actress had pulled out of the movie, but now producer Bob Weinstein has confirmed she'll join fellow Scream regulars Courteney Cox and David Arquette for the third sequel.
Weinstein reveals Scream 4 will start production in April or May next year and he's now in talks with Wes Craven, the man behind the camera for the previous three Scream films, to direct.
The first two Scream movies grossed more than $100 million (£66.7 million) each, while Scream 3 grossed $89 million (£59.3 million) in the U.S.

Kevin Williamson, the original creator of the hit "Scream" series was ready to forge on with a new sequel without the trilogy's star, Neve Campbell, who played oft-stalked Sidney Prescott. But now both Bob Weinstein, who'll produce the films under his Dimension Films, and Williamson both confirmed that Campbell is set to return to her most successful role.
An excited Williamson took to his Twitter ("Yes on Neve guys!" he wrote) while Weinstein confirmed it to reporters. Courtney Cox and David Arquette, who also starred in the 0 million-plus grossing films which ended with 2000's "Scream 3," are also set to return.
The fourth entry in the "Scream" franchise is set to begin filming in the spring of 2010. Wes Craven, who directed the first three films, has not signed as director. Williamson is currently penning the script.

It seems the Weinstein’s and screenwriter Kevin Williamson were finally able to break Neve Campbell, as the actress, who originally stated she would not be returning for another Scream, has now signed on to star in the upcoming fourth installment of the popular horror franchise.
Scream 4 is said to be the first of a new trilogy, and Dimension Films is talking to Wes Craven to direct. In addition to Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are also set to reprise their roles.
Released in 1996, the first Scream told the story of the fictional town Woodsboro, CA being terrorized by a masked killer who enjoys tormenting his victims with phone calls and movie references. The killer's main target is Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), a teenage girl whose mother Maureen fell victim to a brutal murder one year earlier. The film takes on a who-done-it mystery, with many of her

Don’t stick a pitchfork in Children of the Corn just yet; Dimension Films is looking to do a new adaptation of the original Stephen King short story.
Fangoria reports that screenwriter Ehren Kruger has been hired to write the upcoming film. Children of the Corn had previously been adapted, most notably as a 1984 New World film starring Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), which spawned several sequels released direct-to-video by Dimension.
Apparently, Dimension head honcho Bob Weinstein wishes his company had handled the original movie as well. "We felt the New World film was a missed opportunity," he told Variety. "If you read the short story, it’s got such a strong feeling to it and there’s this religious overtone to it as well."
Children of the Corn is set in a fictional Nebraska town, where a demonic entity known as "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" entices the children

Lussier in Talks for Halloween 3D

My Bloody Valentine 3-D director Patrick Lussier is in discussions with Dimension Films to continue the Michael Myers remakes into Halloween 3-D. The studio is planning a late summer 2010 release, so pre-production will start immediately after he’s officially signed.
Rob Zombie, who once said he wouldn’t make a horror remake or sequel, just completed his “extreme vision” with Halloween II which is both. He’ll now try to fit Sheri Moon Zombie into a remake of 1958’s The Blob.
Lussier is the logical choice for the jump to 3-D after his financially successful My Bloody Valentine earlier this year. He also has a long history with Dimension, editing horror films for them back to Scream in 1996.
Speaking of Scream and remakes, the writer of Scream 3 (Ehren Kruger) is taking a shot at a redo of Stephen King’s Children of the Corn. Don’t be angry, it

Dimension Films' massively inevitable Halloween 3D now has a writer and director, in the form of Patrick Lussier. Rob Zombie is making The Blob next, and probably wasn't interested anyway.Halloween 2, which still doesn't have a UK release date, was roundly trounced by The Final Destination at the box office, but that hasn't stopped the Weinsteins putting the next instalment on a fast track for a 2010 release. Some reports last week put Steve Miner (Friday the 13th parts 2 and 3, Halloween H20) behind the camera, but that always seemed spurious. Lussier makes more sense, having been working with Dimension in one capacity or another forever, editing the Scream series and directing the Dtv Dracula films. Most recently he was behind My Bloody Valentine, so he has the 3D skills to pay the bills. And in other Weinstein horror news comes the revelation that we can expect more Children of the Corn,
