Before I add my comment I should just add that the part of Count Fosco was
played (wonderfully) by Alan Badel. I believe it was one of the last things he did before he died.
I remember watching this series twice and being entranced each time that I saw it. It got me into Wilkie Collins and other Victorian novelists like J. S. Le Fanu. My wife and I even named our cat 'Fosco'.
The series was beautifully made with great acting and a real feeling of pace and suspense. The version made in the 90s isn't a patch on this one in my opinion. The character of Fosco is strangely different and it doesn't follow the story to the book. The 1982 version is much more accurate and feels less modern
somehow. I just wish the BBC would release this on DVD - or at least show it
again and give people a chance to record it. I kept a video recording of 'The Dark Angel' (a BBC dramatisation of Uncle Silas by Le Fanu starring Peter
O'Toole, made in the 80s) and have just been able to transfer it to DVD with a home recorder. I wish I had had the opportunity to tape this version of The
Woman in White!
I recommend this version! If it ever makes it onto video tape or DVD get yourself a copy you will not be disappointed! 10/10.
