The DVD of Planet of the Apes (2001) by Fox offers pretty much what you can expect these from a major film on DVD: high quality transfer and tons of supplements. Any problems? Read on...
The film master used is very clean and steady. It does not get much better, even with the upcoming digitally shot films.
Contrast and color rendition are top of the line. Sharpness could be better, but it's quite sharp nonetheless. The noise and grain level is low and compression good.
The only 'detail' I did not appreciate was the edge enhancement that adds quite some white outlines to edges in daylight scenes. Darker scenes are considerably less affected. A completely unnecessary shot in the 'image quality back'. And the main reason that the disc is not approaching reference quality. Sigh.
There is a second disc full of supplements to keep you busy for hours and hours. Image quality is mostly decent. There is not much in terms of deleted footage, though.
This DVD will look very good on all kinds of displays. Larger screens will reveal the edge enhancement which can be distracting at times.

Also features 2-discs of supplements, including the 2 hour documentary Behind the Planet of the Apes (1998) hosted by Roddy McDowall, a retrospective look at the original 1968 film and the series it spawned. And it all comes in an incredibly efficient digipack in an enormous conversation piece: a plastic life-size ape head bust (the set is hidden in a compartment in the back). Go ape! Limited to 10,000.
