The Notable Films of 2010: Part Two

16 December 2009 3:18 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

'Beverly Hills Cop' is 25 Years Old Today... Can You Believe It?

5 December 2009 2:38 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Reading up on the history of Beverly Hills Cop, it never should have worked. By the time the movie went into production, there were about 8 billion different versions of the script. The final product was basically scotch-taped together from those different versions and whatever else didn't work was improvised by the cast.

Way back when, the story looked like a star vehicle for Al Pacino or James Caan in what would have been a much more serious take on the story. Then Mickey Rourke was attached. Then Rourke walked. Sylvestor Stallone came on board for an even bloodier version that never came to fruition because it would have been too expensive (reportedly Stallone took many of that version's ideas and made Cobra. I'm assuming it was most of the really bad ideas). So what did the studio do with what was once a serious tale of revenge? They made it a comedy. »

Eddie Murphy: a defence

27 November 2009 9:43 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Saying you still love Eddie Murphy is the last taboo. But stick with me ...

For all that blogging has, at least partly, grown up around saying the unsayable, that is not the point of what follows. I am not here to defend the intentions behind Norbit, or reclaim The Adventures of Pluto Nash as a landmark in cult cinema. I will, however, gladly state that the star of each is capable of greatness. Yes, I will publicly declare that I still love Eddie Murphy.

Of course, it's a fondness that's been severely tested over the years. But through every Holy Man and Haunted Mansion I've kept faith with the talent of the man. Now, according to the trade papers, he is potentially making a return to comedies made for those who can tie their own shoelaces in a film called The Misadventures of Fluffy, a project that it's said will »

Eddie Murphy's next?

18 November 2009 2:27 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Do you miss the genuinely funny Eddie Murphy? The charismatic kid from 48 hrs.? The quotable standup Eddie from Raw and Delirious? The casually amiable Eddie of Beverly Hills Cop? Even the self-mocking Eddie of Bowfinger? Doesn't sound like you'll see him again anytime soon. His latest project is a Paramount buddy comedy called The Misadventures Of Fluffy. The movie is described as "a road trip pic through New York featuring talking animals, and with an element of social comedy »

Steve Martin: 'Failure inspires me'

5 November 2009 7:26 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Steve Martin has admitted that his own personal movie highlights happened much earlier in his career. However, the actor told Metro that he had no regrets about making his less-admired films. Martin said: "'I love Bowfinger, The Jerk, Roxanne, La Story, Planes, Trains And Automobiles. But they were all so long ago... "You have to take the good with the bad. If I do something that fails, it inspires me to do something (more) »

Review: Did you ever see… The Negotiator?

15 October 2009 12:19 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This week sees the release of Law Abiding Citizen. The story of a man, played by Gerard Butler, who is forced to watch his family murdered. When the District Attorney makes a shady deal with the defendants, Butler takes matters into his own hands.

The director is F. Gary Gray. You may not recognise the name, but he has directed a tense thriller before, again about a man taking justice into his own hands. Starring the then dream partnership of Kevin Spacey and Samuel L. Jackson, let’s take a look at 1998’s The Negotiator.

As so often happens, there were a couple of movies on the same subject released around the same time, namely hostage negotiators. The other in this case was the Eddie Murphy vehicle, 1997’s Metro. Metro wasn’t very good, but ironically turned out to be, barring Bowfinger, his best movie for years to come.

1999: A Year In Review (Part One)

7 October 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Many films come out every year with critics and fans alike, compiling lists of their bests and worsts. There are also many films that fall between the cracks, only to be discovered years later. Many critics believe that one of the best years in cinema was 1939, when Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were released alongside many other classic gems.

Personally, I’ve always felt that 1999 was an epic year for movies, providing us with so many interesting films. In fact, 1999 was such a good year for movies that even some of the bad ones are still worth watching!

So, please sit back and put your memory caps on as Screen Rant takes on a retrospective of 1999 in the world of film.

In 1999, the world was a very different place. We were on the cusp of a new millennium and 9/11 was something that nobody - not even »

‘Johnny Depp Playing The Riddler’ Voted Favorite ‘Batman 3’ Rumor

13 July 2009 3:13 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

In last week’s poll, I asked readers to vote on the “Batman 3″ rumors they wished were true. From Cher playing Catwoman and Christopher Nolan exiting the franchise to Philip Seymour Hoffman playing The Penguin and Christian Bale taking his growl elsewhere, there’s been no shortage of rumors surrounding the next installment of the Batman film franchise. And no rumor has been without its share of fans, either.

When all the votes were tallied, however, the margin of votes between the most popular rumor and the next wish-it-was-true option was one of the largest in any of our polls thus far. And while the winner isn’t much of a surprise, the support for some of the other might raise a few eyebrows (and cause some heart palpitations) among the Batman faithful.

After all the votes were tallied, two rumors that originated with “Batman Begins” actor Michael Caine proved »

Shortkut is yet another cheating of the audience?

28 June 2009 2:40 AM, PDT | RealBollywood.com | See recent RealBollywood news »

Shortkut is yet another cheating of the audience?Just when we thought, Bollywood filmmakers have finally decided to experiment with new subjects and give something fresh to their loyal audience, here comes a film that not only has a ‘con’ in its title but also actually aims to con the audience with its lifted plot line from a successful Hollywood film titled Bowfinger (1999) starring Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin and Heather Graham. But what is more surprising is that this film,  Shortkut – The Con is On is produced by none other than actor Anil Kapoor who is now Hollywood bound and has given a critically. »

Heather Graham – The Hangover

9 June 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

There is only one place to interview the cast and crew of The Hangover … Las Vegas.

Need more from The Hangover?

I also interviewed Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms.

Click here to watch that on Kptv Fox 12.

We all love Rollergirl. And while Heather Graham has had some hits like Boogie Nights and Bowfinger, she’s also had some misses like Gray Matters. It’s safe to say The Hangover falls into the “hit” category. I sat down with Graham to talk about her role in the flick.

With everyone trying to find their funny moments in this film, who would you stay stood out behind the scenes?

I think everyone was really funny. You know a lot of comedians are really serious off the camera.

When you do a comedy, what do you hope to get out of it compared to a drama?

I think it’s »

Scenes We Love: Trading Places

8 June 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

This Friday Eddie Murphy hits screens with the film Imagine That, which looks to be another family-friendly outing for the once-controversial actor. Sure, these films seem to do pretty well at the box office, and I'm positive Imagine That has just enough cutesy kid moments to attract a whole bunch of families to theaters this weekend, but what I really want is old Eddie Murphy. I want crazy Eddie Murphy. I want bug-eyed Eddie Murphy. I want the Eddie Murphy who couldn't blurt out two lines of dialogue without cursing seven times.

That's the Eddie Murphy I want back in theaters, and while I hope he brings some of that to the planned Beverly Hills Cop 4, part of me feels like that Eddie is long gone and only available in films from the early 90s or prior (with the exception of the hilarious Bowfinger in 1999). So with all that in mind, »

Movies That Deserve a Second Life: Comedy Edition

5 April 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Welcome to another edition of Movies That Deserve a Second Life. If you need a refresher on what I’m referring to by “second life,” check out the Action/Adventure Edition. If you’re caught up, read on to see what funny flics I felt were unfairly ignored/disliked upon its release or have been forgotten in the years since its release.

Comedy is almost certainly the most subjective of all genres. What makes one person laugh is guaranteed to make another yawn or wrinkle his/her brow. Some find juvenilia in poor taste while others bust a gut. Everyone claims to have a sense of humor, but almost no one enjoys every type of humor there is, from dry wit and pungent satire to bodily fluid gags and intentionally groan-worthy puns. Therefore, I think it’s safe to say that no one (besides myself) will be satisfied with every choice. »

2 February 2009 7:14 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

By Neil Pedley

On offer this week are films both long in the making and short on running time. Dakota Fanning does a double bill, Steve Martin further damages his credibility and "Blair Witch" director Daniel Myrick returns to have people running for their sanity.

"2008 Academy Award Nominated Short Films"

For one week only, Shorts International and Magnolia Pictures have teamed up again to bring you the world's finest in the way of live action and animated shorts from a multitude of international filmmakers, as determined by the Academy's selection committee. This year's live action lineup includes the Swiss/German drama "Auf der Strecke (On the Line)," the French life reimagination drama "Manon on the Asphalt", the Roddy Doyle-adaptation "New Boy" [pictured right], the Danish comedy "The Pig" and the German Holocaust-themed drama "Spielzeugland (Toyland)." The animated slate consists of the Japanese hand-drawn "La Maison en Petits Cubes", the Russian slice »
