Cameron Diaz Returns To Raunch As A 'Bad Teacher'

10 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Cameron Diaz can do sweet romantic comedies like "The Holiday" and tearjerker dramas like "My Sister's Keeper" and even the occasional period piece like "Gangs of New York," but her true calling has always been raunchy comedy. Now, to add to her gross-out work in "There's Something About Mary" and "The Sweetest Thing," the actress will star in Columbia Pictures' "Bad Teacher," according to Variety.

Jake Kasdan, who last gave us "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," is directing the comedy, about a "foulmouthed, gold-digging middle-school teacher," who battles with another faculty member for dibs on a hot co-worker. The idea of a fought-over "model teacher" makes me imagine "Glee" star Matthew Morrison as the male lead, but that will never happen.

What makes "Bad Teacher" sound more appealing than, say, "What Happens in Vegas?" is that the script was written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, of TV's …

With Bad Teacher, Cameron Diaz Has The Chance To Be Funny Again

10 December 2009 7:21 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When she first became famous, Cameron Diaz was one of the funniest actresses out there, willing to dance in underoos for McG or use some unfortunate hair gel in There's Something About Mary. Sadly, that risk-taking eventually turned into more princessy roles, recoiling with horror at Ashton Kutcher's dirty ways in What Happens in Vegas or signing on, for some reason, to the ridiculous My Sister's Keeper. But is it too late to get the fearless Cameron back? Maybe not! Variety is reporting that Diaz will star for Sony in Bad Teacher, a comedy about "a foul-mouthed, gold-digging middle-school teacher who, after getting dumped by her boyfriend, competes with a colleague for the affections of the school's model teacher." Sounds like a character who would fit right in with the cast of Glee, and also someone who Diaz could play really, really well. At 37 she clearly knows she's too …

Cameron Diaz Goes From Charlie's Angel to One Bad Teacher

10 December 2009 2:21 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It's hard to believe that fifteen years have passed since Cameron Diaz first jumped onto the big screen as Tina Carlyle, the premiere singer at the Coco Bongo in 1994's The Mask. Since then she's kicked asses in Charlie's Angels, picked pockets in Gangs of New York, and survived Vegas with Ashton Kutcher (ugh). But in her next role she'll just simply have to rely on her fine, um, assets as Variety reports Diaz will be starring in Bad Teacher, a raunchy comedy about a a foulmouthed, gold-digging middle-school teacher who, after getting dumped by her boyfriend, competes with a colleague for the affections of the school's model teacher. Sounds like a great opportunity for Diaz to return to the obscene comedy she hasn't displayed since There's Something About Mary. The real question is who will play the competing colleague vying for the affection of this oh-so-desirable teacher. The script …

Sir Ridley Boards "Monopoly"...

5 December 2009 9:37 AM, PST | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

Director Ridley "Blade Runner" Scott, producer Frank "There's Something About Mary" Beddor and toys/games manufacturer Hasbro, continue developing their feature film adaptation of the board game "Monopoly".

Screenplay is by Pamela "Corpse Bride" Pettler.

Giannina Facio and Hasbro's Brian Goldner are also on board to produce.

Published by Parker Brothers, a subsidiary of Hasbro, the board game is named after the economic concept of a 'monopoly', or the domination of a market by a single entity.

Patented by Charles Darrow in 1935, Monopoly is noted as the most commercially-successful board game in the world, where players compete to bankrupt their opponents by the acquisition of real estate, utilities and cash.

The mascot for the game is a mustachioed man wearing a monocle named 'Mr. Monopoly', formerly known as 'Rich Uncle Pennybags'.

The board consists of forty spaces containing twenty-eight properties, three 'Chance' spaces, three 'Community Chest' spaces, a 'Luxury Tax' space, …

Monopoly Movie Goes Straight To Go... And Collects A Concept!

12 November 2009 3:30 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Frank Beddor, the producer behind There's Something about Mary, has revealed the concept for Ridley Scott's Monopoly movie. When a loveable loser who works at a real estate company in Manhattan tries to convince his friends to help him break the world record for playing Monopoly - 70 days, fact fans - they get in a fight and end up leaving him alone in the apartment holding up a chance card. Out of frustration, he throws the card down and ends up falling asleep. When he awakes, he's holding the chance card and thinks "That's odd..."

Beddor elaborates "He's all groggy and he goes down to buy some coffee and he reaches into his pocket and all he has is Monopoly money. All this Monopoly money pours out. He's confused and embarrassed and the girl reaches across the counter and says, 'That's Ok.' And she gives him change in Monopoly money. …

Supposed Plot Details for Ridley Scott's 'Monopoly' Movie Pass Go

12 November 2009 2:38 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

If you have been wondering just how Ridley Scott and Universal Pictures were going to turn the popular "Monopoly" board game into a feature film then join the club. Corpse Bride and 9 co-writer Pamela Pettler was brought aboard to pen the screenplay and some interesting details surfaced yesterday with regards to the plot, which had to this point been kept extremely quiet.

Geoff Boucher writing for the Los Angeles Times talked with Frank Beddor, one of the producers of There's Something About Mary and apparently someone involved with the "Monopoly" project even though I have never seen his name mentioned outside of Boucher's article. Not even the Variety article mentions his name or IMDb but that isn't stopping from Beddor saying, "I wrote the story that got Hasbro excited and I attached Ridley Scott. The project was underway but they were in a little bit of trouble I guess and …

'Inglourious Basterds' Scalps the Box Office

24 August 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

With a smashing debut for Inglourious Basterds, overall business was a-boomin'. The increase over the same weekend last year was around 20 percent, making for one of the busier late August weekends on record. Storming approximately 4,400 screens at 3,165 sites, Inglourious Basterds ground out $38.1 million, ranking as the highest-grossing opening ever for a movie released in the second half of August (and 11th for the month as a whole). More importantly, among World War 2-themed pictures, only Pearl Harbor and Saving Private Ryan had greater initial attendance, and Basterds more than quadrupled the debut of recent release, Defiance, and exceeded Valkyrie's first three days by 58 percent. Basterds also set a new high for writer-director Quentin Tarantino, surpassing the start of Kill Bill Vol. 2 ($25.1 million) and more than tripling the debut of his last movie, box office disappointment Grindhouse. Inglourious Basterds succeeded where Grindhouse failed thanks to a focused marketing campaign and more …

Whatever your take, hopefully we can all agree that he was great with Cameron Diaz in "There's Something About Mary."

'Three Stooges' Update: Paul Giamatti Replaces Sean Penn

I'm not sure if this revolving door full of different actors is an indication that the film will turn out just as jumbled and confusing, but I will say that it can't be the greatest sign of things to come. Then again, I was never really fond of a Three Stooges movie from Peter and Bobby Farrelly (There's Something About Mary) in the first place, mainly because I feel the Farrelly brothers have ...

Girls on Film: Girls, Guys, and Grossness

27 July 2009 7:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

A week ago, Variety threw up an editorial called "Can girls out-gross guys at box office?" I felt naive thinking: "Is that really a question anymore?" The mere fact that this is being asked shows that it still holds relevance. But it shouldn't. If women have proved one thing over the years, it's that comedy doesn't require a penis and testosterone.

Whether women get the chance to prove their gross-out talents, however, is another story.

But first: What is this thing called "gross-out comedy"? Isn't it when gross or shocking things come into play? The sweaty, hairy wrassling match from Borat, the spermy hair gel from There's Something About Mary, the arse-tacular baseball from Squeeze Play -- these are scenes that make you squirm, gasp, gape, and laugh. Now, however,"gross-out" is becoming a catch-all phrase for any comedy that gets an R. CBS News even used Sex and the …

Weekend Report: 'Transformers' Fends Off 'Ice Age' in Close Independence Weekend

6 July 2009 2:44 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Giant robots narrowly socked it to anachronistic dinosaurs over Independence Day weekend. With actual grosses reporting, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen weighed in with $42.3 million, while Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs came in at $41.7 million. Distributors Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox had estimated $42.5 million for each movie, which was the first time two studios had the same weekend estimate since 1998, when Titanic and The Man in the Iron Mask were in a photo finish. Paramount ended up having the more accurate Sunday projection, and that was the difference as both pictures were neck-and-neck on Friday and Saturday. With Public Enemies debuting solidly in third, business as a whole was up a tick from the same weekend last year, when Hancock was in charge.

Overall, Revenge of the Fallen has had a far more winning run than Dawn of the Dinosaurs. It will pass its predecessor's final gross in a matter of days, …

Cameron Diaz Channels Madonna in V Magazine

There can only be one Madonna—which is probably a good thing—but Cameron Diaz does her best to emulate the "Papa Don't Preach" singer in the new issue of V Magazine, which hits newsstands on Tuesday. The There's Something About Mary actress was shot in London by photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot for the photo-spread, which was inspired by Her Madgesty's True Blue period. (Madonna's third studio album, True Blue, was released in 1986.) Though Diaz wore Prada boots and shorts for the photo session, the conical bra was crafted by the stylist using gaffer's tape.
