Snoop Dogg is, for lack of a better term, a pretty bizarre figure in pop culture, one whose longevity and chameleon-like skills are something of an anomaly in hip-hop. Rappers turned actors like LL Cool J and Ice-t have been able to effectively sand down the more bellicose elements of their personas for mass consumption, but the former never made as hard of a family-friendly pivot as Snoop, and you’re unlikely to find Ice-t chillin’ with Justin Bieber.
Born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., Snoop Dogg—formerly Snoop Doggy Dogg, and, for a brief moment when he was exploring Rastafarianism, Snoop Lion—is a man for every season, or, more accurately, an entertainer for any occasion. Between all of his acting credits, Twitch livestreams, and cooking-show antics with Bff Martha Stewart, one could easily forget that he’s a music artist who’s dabbled in just about every genre, from gangsta rap to gospel.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the CW/Warner Bros. TV two-part season one finale of Naomi, ep. 12 “Ready or Not” and ep. 13 “Who Am I?”
Imagine finding out that your adopted parents took the lives of your biological parents.
Something that just was never in the DNA of Jonathan and Martha Kent, Superman’s down-to-Earth guardians.
But life can’t always imitate that of your mentor, the Man of Steel; a harsh truth that alien Naomi (Kaci Walfall) learned tonight on the two-hour season finale of the Ava DuVernay-Jill Blankenship co-created series.
But before we get there, in part one of the season finale, “Ready or Not,” our protagonist is given a locket by fellow alien Akira (Stephanie March), who was her mother’s friend. She’s re-building a ship to get Naomi back to her home planet, a mission her Earth parents Greg and Jennifer McDuffie (Barry Watson...

A twisty true-crime story loses much of its appeal in Ursula Macfarlane’s The Lost Sons, a “who am I?” doc whose subject is more fascinated with that question than most viewers will be. Paul Fronczak was ten years old when he learned he had been the victim of a foiled newborn abduction; only decades later did he realize his story was even more convoluted. Though well shot, the CNN-coproduced film always feels TV-grade at best; its level of drama (not to mention its failure to find anything universal in the specifics of Fronczak’s tale) is out-of-place on a ...

Veteran Hong Kong action movie director Benny Chan has sadly passed away at the age of 58.
After a beginning of career working for Rtv and Tvb, director Chan served as assistant to Johnnie To. His directorial debut was “A moment of Romance”, produced by Johnnie To, starring Andy Lau and Jacklyn Wu.
During a long lasting collaboration with Jackie Chan he directed “Who Am I?”, “New Police Story”, “Rob-b-Hood”, “Shaolin”. More action classics directed by Chan include “The White Storm”, “Call of Heroes”, “City Under Siege” and “Connected”.
Benny Chan was filming his latest work, “Raging Fire” with Donnie Yen and Nicholas Tse when he felt ill and was hospitalised. The filming had been completed but Chan wasn’t able to supervise the post production.
Gone too soon, Chan was one of the last genuine directors of action movies in Hong Kong.

With civic arts support low on American capitalism’s to-do list, orchestras and composers are canoodling more frequently with rock and pop acts — who of course have their own struggles, wringing pennies from streaming platforms et al. When the outcome isn’t just simpleminded hits-with-strings reheats or half-cooked vanity concertos, it’s a way for living artists to stretch “high culture” into useful new shapes.
