About ten years ago, three promising young actors were working to secure a place amongst the Hollywood A-list. Natalie Portman had finished her first major acting role, as Mathilda in Luc Bessons Leon. She would go on to make her major breakthrough in the Star Wars prequels. Tobey Maguire had small roles in respected films like The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys, then also got his major break in a high budget franchise, winning the role of Spiderman. Jake Gyllenhaal came to public attention through his role in sleeper Indie hit Donnie Darko, then hit the big time through a combination of big budget popcorn in The Day After Tomorrow, and critically acclaimed drama in Brokeback Mountain. Next week in the Us, these three actors, firmly A-List, come together for Jim Sheridan’s brothers.

While it did break midnight and opening day records, The Twilight Saga: New Moon was unable to beat The Dark Knight's huge opening weekend record, despite being the highest opening weekend of 2009. The Summit Entertainment sequel took in an estimated $140.7 million domestically over the three day weekend, about $18 million shy of Batman's record $158 million, and even shy of Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million. New Moon will probably beat the life-time domestic theatrical gross of Twilight by the end of the week. New Moon's worldwide total is $258.8 million, the seventh highest worldwide opening of all time, behind Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. There were no early bedtimes for Twihards as the second film in the series, New Moon, opened at midnight on Thursday.
The hysterically-anticipated sequel was greeted by its largely female audience with screams, cheers and tears as they flocked to see the movie. Some girls in the Us reportedly clutched handbags rattling with bottles of prescription tranquillisers so they could make it through the film without uncontrollable frenzy or fainting fits.
And the fans' dedication paid off. The Twilight Saga: New Moon proved to be more of an eclipse in its theatrical debut, breaking two box office records before this weekend is even over.
According to figures for North America, the vampire romance set a new record for a midnight opening, taking $26.27million and beating Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince's $22.2million from July 15, which had itself smashed the previous record set by The Dark Knight's $18.4million from July 18 last year. »

Twilight fans turned out in force on Thursday night to help New Moon smash a box office record - the sequel earned a staggering $26.27 million (£16.42 million) overnight in the U.S. and Canada alone.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, debuted at midnight on Thursday (19/20Nov09) at 3,514 cinemas across North America to accommodate die-hard devotees of the franchise, some of whom had waited in line for hours to catch the second adaptation of Stephanie Meyer's vampire novels.
The huge box office haul smashes the previous record for midnight takings, set by Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince with $22 million (£13.75 million).
Other top overnight performers are The Dark Knight with $18.5 million (£11.56 million), Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith with $16.9 million (£10.56 million), and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with $16 million (£10 million). »

From all indications, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" was a major hit on its opening night, midnight on Friday, November 20, with great success at the box office including advanced ticket sales. Directed by Chris Weitz and based on a Stephenie Meyer novel, and prominently featuring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, "New Moon" is projected to have an $85 to $100 million opening weekend. The first Twilight film brought in $69.6 million its first days. According to online ticket seller MovieTickets.com, "New Moon" is the No. 1 Advance Ticket Seller of all time, surpassing "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," which previously held the title. News organizations nationwide reported their local theatres selling out, with many camped out for hours to stake out their spot for the heavily-hyped midnight premiere. Before even hitting the screen, it was reported Thursday that more... »

Or perhaps, just the biggest movie of 2009. Either/or. According to the folks at online movie ticket vendor Fandango, advance ticket sales numbers for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” has easily beat out every movie in the company’s 10-year history, including “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Stars Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.” The film is also MovieTickets.com’s bestselling pre-sold title in its history. All that is leading industry insiders to predict something in the range of an $85 million opening weekend for Summit’s tale of lovelorn High School girls and their vampire/werewolf crushes. My own guess? Somewhere closer to $100 million. To capitalize on the Chris Weitz-directed “New Moon”, Summit will be re-releasing the first “Twilight” (which has grossed over $380 million worldwide) back into 2,057 theaters on Thursday. It will then deliver “New Moon” into 3,500 theaters for its Thursday midnight showing, and expanding it to 4,024 by Friday morning. »

Will Ferrell and Ewan McGregor on Wednesday headed a Forbes.com list of Hollywood’s most overpaid stars when looking at the financial returns of their movies.
Ferrell tops the list of stars who cost more than their movies do, taking in one dollar for every $3.29 his films make. According to Forbes, “Land of the Lost” cost an estimated $US100 million to make but earned just $US65 million at box offices worldwide for movie studio Universal Pictures. The movie followed a disappointing $US43 million box office for Ferrell’s 2008 outing “Semi-Pro“, and $US128 million for “Step Brothers.”
No. 2 on the overpaid actors list is Ewan McGregor (I Love You Phillip Morris, Angels & Demons, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Amelia), who made a slew of poorly performing movies after playing Obi-Wan Kenobi four years ago in “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.” McGregor’s films earned $3.75 per dollar he was paid. »

No surprise here: Twilight fans are salivating in preparation to sink their teeth into the franchise's much-anticipated sequel, New Moon. The film, which will be in theaters Friday, is already attracting record audiences for ticket sellers and venues across the country. According to Fandango, who notes that their numbers are increasing every second, several thousand New Moon showtimes have sold out, making it the most the company has ever sold prior to a film's release date. (And, yes, that means the film has even topped The Dark Knight, and movies from both the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises.) AMC and MovieTickets. »

Last Weekend saw Roland Emmerich's global disaster movie 2012 bring in $225million at the box office.
This weekend there is likely to be another series of earth-shaking tremors caused by the stampedes of Twihards to see New Moon, the second film in the Twilight franchise.
It willl be interesting to see its opening ticket sales and how it impacts on 2012's second weekend.
But Chris Weitz (pictured right), director of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, has revealed the public passion for bloodsuckers has taken him completely by surprise.
He thought TV's Buffy show was the stake through the heart of the vampire craze.
He took the reins on New Moon, based on Stephenie Meyer's second vampire romance novel, as brother Paul Weitz started pre-production on Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, an adaptation of the first three novellas in Darren Shan's best-selling teenage vampire saga.

Coming Soon debuted the French poster for James Cameron's Avatar, which is featured at the bottom of this post and I won't be surprised if it gets a rough reception from readers.
I've started to realize where this film is going to find its largest group of detractors, people expecting James Cameron's Aliens or Terminator 2 films. Instead, Avatar looks like it is gearing up for a family-friendly appeal. I recently opened the door to the possibility of the film getting a PG-rating, which many people were none too happy about and then just yesterday I received the following email from a reader named 'Az': I have news that Avatar will most likely be rated PG due to the fact that McDonald's will be having tie-in toys for the movies' release. McDonald's always has toys based on movies rated PG or below. If Burger King had the tie-in toys it »

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is not expected to challenge the big all-time box office records but it has already stirred up boffo business before even hitting the silver screen.
Fandango has announced The Twilight Saga: New Moon has become the top selling advance ticket sales title of all time. To obtain the crown it beat out Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Dark Knight and the original Twilight.
Stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and to a lesser degree Dakota Fanning have drawn in approximately 86% of all weekly ticket sales at Fandango, a number expected to climb this week as the film approaches its midnight opening. MovieTickets.com is reporting over 94% of its ticket sales are for New Moon and over 2100 sellouts for the midnight screening. Fandango also says "thousands" of showings are sold out.

The best move that Summit ever made was to get the rights to the Twilight Franchise. That film franchise is a license to print money. Or at least take money from every teenage girl in the free world. Not only has the film sold out 2100 theaters and its not even out yet but its also now accounting for 94% of all Ticket Sales. Can you say cha-ching?
The anticipation surrounding “New Moon” has been growing since tickets went on sale in September, and the film is certainly living up to expectations. Today “New Moon” breaks another record capturing the No. 1 spot on MovieTickets.com’s list of the Top-10 Advance Ticket Sellers of All-Time. The film surpassed the former top contender “Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” and film franchises including “Harry Potter” and “Lord of the Rings” as it set a new record.

Just how big is this frakker going to be, anyway?
We're three days out until The Twilight Saga: New Moon shape-shifts into theaters and it looks like the wolf-pack at the heart of this outing is going to take a huge bite out of the box office.
Fandango is reporting that New Moon has leapt to the top of the list of pre-sale ticket sales, surpassing the prior record holders to become the fastest seller in the 10 year history of the company.
Midnight shows across the country have sold out. Theaters are scrambling to program more screens and more showtimes, fans are lining up and several newborn children have already been named "Jacob" "Taylor" "Robert" and "Edward."
This is going to be big, doorQs.

Crazy numbers are coming in from Fandango, claiming that The Twilight Saga: New Moon is now the official record holder for most advanced tickets sold on the site, ever. You heard right: New Moon has sold more advanced tickets than The Dark Knight, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith or Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – and even more tickets than a little movie called Twilight, which hit theaters around this same time last year.
Now of course some of you hear that statistic and think to yourselves “So what? No big surprise there…” New Moon is the bigger, (seemingly) better chapter in a wildly popular franchise of books-cum-movies, and, like every other film in that advanced tickets listing above, is simply doing what it should: building on its own success.
Oh, but this is just the beginning, my friends; matter of fact, with New Moon busting into theaters this week, »

The End Of The World proved to be a massive attraction for moviegoers as Roland Emmerich's 2012 opened this weekend with an earth-shattering $225million at the worldwide box office.
Ticket sales in the Us and Canada brought in $65million, with the foreign tally of $160million from 105 countries, led by France.
Sony's Columbia Pictures said the film scored the highest worldwide opening for an original film not based on an established franchise, brand or best-seller.
In global terms, it ranks No 9 for film openings, behind (from No1 to 8) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Da Vinci Code.

Here's another list for you to digest as we approach the end of the decade. Jason Kottke [1] recently took a look at the list of highest-grossing films from 2000-2009 courtesy of Wikipedia [2], and makes the observation that only one movie in the top 20 is based on an original screenplay. The rest of the movies are all adaptations of books or sequels to existing franchises. Now, it's pretty easy to jump on this list and whine and moan about how it means there is nothing original in Hollywood anymore. While I agree that there is a problem with studios valuing brand over concept, don't forget, we are talking about the movies that made the most money here. Of Course familiar characters and titles are going to attract more viewers than strange and unfamiliar ones... doesn't that make sense? A lot of people don't even see movies at the theatre, so they »

In a crazy, mixed-up world where something like New Moon Underwear and New Moon Chocolate has enough of a demand for mass production, it was only inevitable that the ticket pre-sales for the movie itself, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, would be astronomical. According to Fandango, that is, indeed, the case.
Though the film doesn’t open until November 20th (This Friday), tickets are already on sale. As of Saturday, November 14th at 8:00Pm, the film had already broken the record for most pre-sales of the last 10 years. Here’s the list of the top five, for comparison.

4. The Dark Knight (2008)

Five days before its release in over 4,000 theaters, The Twilight Saga: New Moon has sold the most advanced tickets in Fandango.com history. The 10-year-old website is the largest destination for online movie tickets.
The Twilight sequel topped the list as of Saturday night, according to Nikki Finke, beating reigning champ, 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith; this year’s second highest-grossing movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince; last year’s box office juggernaut, The Dark Knight; and the original Twilight.
Up until this series, most people only knew Robert Pattinson as Cedric from Harry Potter. Now he’s drawing bigger early crowds than even that huge franchise, plus Batman and Star Wars? Though, to be fair, the Stephenie Meyer adaptation also stars a perpetually shirtless Taylor Lautner and, oh yeah, Kristen Stewart.
The vampire franchise became a hit a year ago this weekend, posting $7 million in midnight sales alone, »
