David is left reeling after Helene tells him that his brother Barry was murdered and gives him a suitcase with £50,000 Swiss francs inside that he asked her to safeguard the night before he died. But before he can contact the police he is intercepted in his car and knocked out, with the money stolen by barman Charalambos. When he does tell the Inspector Dimos, they go to the bar Charalambos works at, only to be informed that no barman of that name works there. Meanwhile Inspector Dimos makes inquiries at the work site where David's brother worked and questions foreman Martin Preece on David's mental stability, but also on the recent deaths of a number of other workers attached to the site. Later David receives a phone call stating they have information on his brother's death and asks to meet him at a rendezvous.

David's assignation with Eric Morrison, one of his brother's work colleagues, is interrupted when a gunman tries to kill them both and David is left for dead with a damaged ankle and alone in the mountains. He is later discovered by a strange huntsman called Basileos, who takes him to a monastery and tends to him. But when David wakes the next morning he discovers Basileos dining with the mysterious Helene and the disappearing barman Charalambos and makes his escape. However, when he brings the police back to the place it is empty and Inspector Dimas no nearer to believing his story. Eric Morrison is also missing, but he later reappears at David's brother's apartment, along with the missing suitcase of which he claims half of the money is his.

Eric Morrison is pursued by a man in a black car trying to kill him. Frightened, he asks his Greek girlfriend Maria to hide him somewhere and she chooses her cousin Adonis, who runs a garage in the hills. He later explains to them that he and Barry Collier had found a buyer for some ancient treasure they had found but didn't know who it was as Barry died before he could tell him. Meanwhile the American Hillman orders his henchmen to go to Barry's apartment to pressure David in revealing what he knows, but they have a surprise awaiting them. As does David, who discovers Helene in the apartment and tries to find out just what is going on. But can he trust her?

Hillman is surprised when David contacts him on his yacht and informs him of what has recently been happening to him, as well as the fact that his brother was murdered. Upon hearing him Hillman is convinced David knows nothing and instead orders his henchmen to try and locate the missing Eric Morrison. Meanwhile Eric goes to retrieve a necklace from the cave for a bargaining tool and is followed by Maria's cousin Adonis, who loses him in a little intervention by Basileos. However, Adonis does find a mysterious buyer, who arranges a meeting with the duo.

Hellman throws a lavish party where most of the inhabitants come. David goes along, as does the building site manager Wyndham and his foreman Martin Preece, but David fails to spot Helene there at the party talking to Preece. Meanwhile Eric Morrison goes to meet the new buyer at a deserted warehouse to arrange a deal for the treasure he had found, only to find someone there he wasn't expecting. And when he doesn't return home the next day his girlfriend Maria contacts Inspector Dimas, who begins to have second thoughts and questions David again on his story. And it is there that he becomes intrigued by one of the photographs in David's brother's wallet.

Hellman is visited by Martin Preece with an offer to sell him the treasure discovered by Collier and Morrison. But when Preece tells him the suitcase of money is not enough to buy them Hellman tells him that he is not the owner of the suitcase, leaving Preece to wonder if Helene is the other buyer. Inspector Dimas continues to make inquiries and tracks down historian Professor Stylianou over the photo he found in Collier's wallet. And while enjoying a street carnival David comes across the mysterious trio of Charalambos, Basileos and Helene, closely watched by Preece. But when Helene and David walk among the old ruins, he little realizes the danger he is in, or of what he will find in his brother's apartment later on.

David arranges to meet Hellman at the Colosseum after discovering gems in his brother's apartment, little realizing that Basileos is stalking him with a rifle. Hellman reveals how his brother came to be in possession of the gems and informs him that he knows who murdered his brother, but tells him he will only reveal the killer's identity in return for the whereabouts of the treasure. Meanwhile Preece manages to escape from the abandoned church where he found himself locked in and makes his way to the cave. But so are the mysterious trio of Helene, Charalambos and Basileos, as is David, who is in grave danger.
