Joss Whedon has done so much more than just work in the TV and film industry. He's created entire meticulous universes for his characters and fans to explore, and that's no easy task. Thankfully the man is about to get his due.
Variety reports that The Producers Guild of America has selected Joss Whedon as the recipient of its Vanguard Award, which recognizes achievements in new media and technology.
Whedon is a producer, writer, director, and creator for TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly," and "Dollhouse" with film scripts including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Toy Story, Alien Resurrection and Titan A.E. He's penned the comic book series Fray and created and produced Internet series "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog."
His next feature Cabin in the Woods, which he co-wrote with Drew Goddard, is currently in post-production and is scheduled to be released sometime in 2011 by MGM. Given the studio's recent financial problems,

Terminator Rights Up for Grabs, Whedon Bids

The rights for the Terminator franchise are headed for an auction as the Halcyon Company who owns them files for Chapter 11.
I hinted this would happen last month, but now Halcyon is serious about unloading its largest asset by January 2010. The company purchased the rights in 2007 for $25-30 million before churning out a sequel that made $380 million worldwide. An exec with Fti Capital Advisers claims the property is worth $60-70 million now. Maybe those suits didn’t see Terminator Salvation.
Sony is definitely interested, especially considering their two biggest franchises are Men in Black and Spider-Man, both of which are already headed for a third and fourth. Summit Entertainment is also considering it, what with all the Twilight money they have to throw around these days. Plus the rest of the major studios considering the potential.
The winner would get the whole Terminator bundle: future movies, the “Sarah Connor Chronicles

Buffy the Vampire Slayer mastermind Joss Whedon wants the Terminator franchise and he's willing to pay his hard earned cash right now for the franchise. Does $10,000 sound like too much?
Whedon wrote a tongue-in-cheek post on the Whedonesque forum detailing his vision for Terminator. Are you ready?
"I am Joss Whedon, the mastermind behind Titan A.E., Parenthood (not the movie) (or the new series) (or the one where 'hood' was capitalized 'cause it was a pun), and myriad other legendary tales. I have heard through the 'grapevine' that the Terminator franchise is for sale, and I am prepared to make a pre-emptive bid Right Now to wrap this dealio up. This is not a joke, this is not a scam, this is not available on TV. I will write a check Today for $10,000, and viola! Terminator off your hands.
"No, you didn't miscount. That's four -- Four! -- zeroes after that one.

Amidst reports about the rights of the "Terminator" franchise being up for auction surfaced, TV series creator Joss Whedon penned an open letter to the franchise owners, offering $10,000 for the rights. While some deemed his letter hilarious, the man behind "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Dollhouse" told Entertainment Weekly he is not just being funny.
"Here's the thing: It's not a slam on The Terminator. I love The Terminator. That part's totally true," the 45-year-old explained his grounds. "I was thinking to myself, 'Not since they auctioned off frames from The Little Mermaid have I wished I had more money this much. So you know what, never hurts to ask.' I loved the movies, even the later movies."
"I loved the mythology. I loved the TV show [Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles] - like, really loved. Not for pretend. And not just because of [star] Summer [Glau]," he went on. "But mostly, it's just me being a dumb-ass,

In case you haven't heard, the rights to the Terminator franchise are once again going to be up for grabs [1] when they are auctioned off later this month, and a number of studios are said to be interested including Sony, Summit Entertainment and Media Rights Capital. It's unclear what this will mean for the future of the franchise, but apparently big media corporations aren't the only ones hoping to get a chance to repackage and resell the robot apocalypse. Believe it or not, there are a few other interested parties out there, including one... Joss Whedon?
In a somewhat humourous and irreverent open letter posted on Whedonesque [2] and Deadline Hollywood [3], the man behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse offers up a tidy sum of $10,000 for the franchise, and proceeds to give some of his ideas about what to do with it. As expected, there is at least one

Joss Whedon Offers To Buy ‘Terminator’ Franchise

That Joss Whedon is a funny guy and one heck of a writer. His shows, including Firefly, Buffy, Angel and Dollhouse, are among the most favored by fans and, of course, we love his work here at The Flickcast. Now, with the Terminator franchise apparently up for sale (again) Whedon has made a modest proposal of his own to buy the entire thing in an open letter to those selling the franchise.
Among the items covered in this open letter are how much he offers for the franchise and what he would do with it if he got it. Its a funny and, in some cases, inspirational attempt at humor from a man who knows how to bring the funny.
Although, maybe he’s serious and thinks he would do a good job with the franchise? And, thinking about it a bit more myself, I think he would do a great job with Terminator also.

If you haven't heard yet, the rights to the Terminator franchise are going up for auction later this month. The Financial Times reports that The Halcyon Co. is selling off the entire rights to the franchise, which will "give the buyer the ability to make new Terminator films, TV programmes and other spin-offs that build on the popularity of the franchise." Sounds like a hell of a deal. It will reportedly sell for more than $60 million, which is what the Tmnt franchise sold for recently. But that's not the best part. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood published an open letter from Joss Whedon to the owners of the rights and it's just hilarious.
It's better to read the letter in its entirety on Deadline Hollywood, but I've pulled some of the best parts:

The rights to the Terminator franchise have only been up on the auction block for about as long as it takes Arnold Schwarzenegger to emerge naked from a time bubble, but a veteran Hollywood mogul has already expressed interest in taking the brand off the hands of the now-bankrupt Halcyon; and that vet is none other than Toy Story, Alien: Resurrection, and Titan A.E. screenwriter Joss Whedon (oh, and he created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and "Firefly"/Serenity, but I don't think anyone has ever heard of those).
Mr. Whedon took the time out of his busy schedule running his latest TV show, the Eliza Dushku starring "Dollhouse", to write an earnest letter to Halcyon making the case for why he's the right man for the job. And as with all things Whedon, his proposal has its fair share of the funny.
In it, he outlines the six possible directions he'd take the franchise,

Earlier today we reported that this week the rights for the “Terminator” were up for auction. Now self-proclaimed movie-mogul, the mastermind behind such films as “Titan A.E.”, “Parenthood” (not the movie or the new TV series), and “Alien Resurrection” (although he really wishes you wouldn’t credit him for that), is interested in buying the “Terminator” rights for…Ten Thousand Dollars! [Whedon raises pinky to his lips]. Hit the jump to read Mr. Whedon’s open letter about why he thinks he could re-invigorate the franchise (one idea: more porn).
In an open letter sent to Deadline.com, Joss Whedon makes his case for what he would do for the “Terminator” franchise that no other studio will go because they’re too scared and too sane.

Breaking: V Star Scott Wolf Addresses Production Delays
For those of you who don't know, the company that currently owns the rights to the entire Terminator franchise (Halcyon) is experiencing some (serious) financial difficulties and is auctioning off the franchise rights in an attempt to secure some cash.
According to Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood Daily, a lot of studios (led by Sony) are interested in bidding in the auction, despite the fact that the recent Terminator Salvation didn't do as well as some would have hoped (I liked it….but even I admit it could have been better – easy fix: more Worthington, since he was arguably the best part of the entire movie).
As a follow-up to her post, Ms. Finke posted an open letter penned by Joss Whedon to the owners of the franchise rights. Joss Whedon is like a god….only much, much funnier. I want

Not too long after news of Terminator being up for grabs, another big name is throwing their hat in the ring. That name is Joss Whedon.

Part II of our exclusive coverage (read part I here) from the set of Powerman 5000's "Super Villain" from their new album Somewhere On The Other Side Of Nowhere (see our advance review here).
On a rubble strewn indoor set in Alhambra, California, Powerman 5000 frontman Spider One sings and gyrates for his new video "Supervillain". Directed by Almost Human FX wizard Rob Hall, Spider explains "it's everything in his life flashing through a supervillain's head right before he dies!"
Taking a quick break, the singer explains, "It's all about robots, villains and destruction!"
Pat Jankiewicz/Fangoria: I see a big Marvel Comics/Jack Kirby influence on this video...
Spider One: There is--i was a Marvel kid growing up. When I was really young collecting comics, I didn't 'get' Jack Kirby. I collected in the age of George Perez and John Byrne. Those are my favorite artists; John Byrne

The end of the world has never been so funny! Watch The Remnants now!

It appears Joss Whedon wasn't the only writer who took advantage of last year's writer's strike to create a hilarious webseries. Writer John August (Corpse Bride, Big Fish, and Titan A.E.) wrote and directed a pilot for a post-apocalyptic comedy called The Remnants and it is Really funny.
As it stands right now, The Remnants is still being shopped around to possible sponsors so, as far as I can tell, there won't be any more eps just yet. But for now, the entire pilot can be viewed right here as Mr. August has been kind enough to make the whole thing available. It's full of famous faces and quotable lines so set aside 10 minutes and watch it. Big thanks to Quiet Earth reader Avery for the find.
