Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 26, 2009

26 October 2009 7:55 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This week:

Over the weekend the box office Saw some Paranormal Activity; Carl Ellsworth was hired by Paramount but he wants C.O.D (Cash On Delivery); True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten is Griff the Invisible; Derek Mears gears up for Predators and Laura Dern Meets Stiller and family.

Wow. It looks like the Saw franchise has finally come to a grisly end. The sixth film in the horror franchise opened with 50% less than what was predicted, earning a not-so-good $14.7 million. The film probably only cost about $15 million to make, but this poor gross means that it’ll have to have some serious overseas takings to make new installments viable.

The flipside to Saw’s demise was the $22 million that Paranormal Activity took over the weekend - from a thousand less screens than Saw!

With a cost of approximately $11,000 (yeah, you read that right) it looks like Oren Peli’s »

Movies That Put the Owee in Halloween

7 October 2009 10:04 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It’s that time of year again.  The pumpkins are out, the leaves are turning colors, the air is brisk and chilly.  It’s time for the spooky stories, the frightening films, the maybe not so scary but at times certainly inventive costumes and that most important element…..candy corn.  Yes folks, Halloween season is upon us once again.

My yearly tradition on All Hallows Eve is to hole up in my house, turn off all the lights and settle in to a nice good ole fashioned Horror movie.  What other way to celebrate right?  I figured this would be the perfect time to run down a list movies that fit this time of year perfectly.  Let’s run them down by letter shall we?

Alexandra Sokoloff ('The Unseen', 'The Harrowing')

27 September 2009 5:55 PM, PDT | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

By Alan Kelly

Alexandra Sokoloff is a screen-writer well established in California writing novel adaptations (like the thriller Cold Kisses) for various Hollywood studios like Sony, Miramax and Disney. A graduate of Uc Berkeley where she majored in theatre and minored in just about everything else. Sokoloff has had three extremely well-received novels published: The Harrowing, The Price and The Unseen and is collaborating on a vampire trilogy with Heather Graham and Deborah Leblanc, which is due out next year...

Sokoloff explores themes of loss, loneliness, things that may be at the edge of our awareness or merely manufactured traumas created by the unnerving worlds her characters inhabit, plunging her readers into terrifying occult realms. Her novels are slices of supernatural realism which are fast, punchy, clever and chock-full of creepy intrigue.

Structure seems very important to you. Do you map your novels out before beginning; I ask this because »

First Footage of John Carpenter’s ‘The Ward’

16 September 2009 10:44 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Director and horror icon, John Carpenter, is finally back behind the camera where he rightfully belongs, filming his next horror/thriller film The Ward. It’s been a long drought for fans of his Carpenter’s stylings; the last film he directed was 2001 sci-fi horror flop film Ghosts of Mars (still scratching my head as to why he went with Ice Cube for the lead). If you want to go back to his last Good horror film, then you’ll need to reach back a few more years to 1998 and the fantastic movie Vampires with the ever popular James Woods.

The Ward has a fairly interesting female cast with Amber Heard (Zombieland), Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies), Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick Ass, Hot Tub Time Machine) and newcomer Sali Sayler all confined to a psychiatric hospital where Heard has just been committed. Fringe guest-star Jared Harris rounds out the cast as Dr. »

More Cast Members Added to John Carpenter's The Ward

4 September 2009 1:58 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Has John Carpenter really been away from the big screen for almost ten years? Okay, maybe Ghosts of Mars wasn't amazing, but I thought it had enough going for it to warrant a look. That said, I don't think Carpenter's done with the scares just yet, and I'm pulling for The Ward to be his triumphant return. Oh yeah, there's some new casting news, too.

According to the IMDb, Jared Harris (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Mamie Gummer (Taking Woodstock), and Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick-Ass) have been added to a cast already featuring Amber Heard (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) and Danielle Panabaker (that shitty Friday the 13th remake).

The film, written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, is an intense psychological thriller set in a mental institution where a young woman, Kristen (Heard), is haunted by a mysterious and deadly ghost. As danger creeps closer, she comes to realize »

Rob Zombie Is Cool With 'Twilight': The MTV Quote Of The Day

26 August 2009 1:49 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

"Vampires seem to be the monster that pops up the most frequently, because it's hard to do other ones. It's hard to make a sexy wolf-man. I did see 'Twilight.' It was fine. I had no problems with it. I'm sure I'd enjoy it a lot more if I was a 14-year-old girl!"

-"Halloween II" director and theatrical metalhead Rob Zombie discussing the "Twilight" phenomenon. Zombie, who grew up on horror movies and whose films are about monsters who are very human, has no beef with the current trend of "sexy vampires" and reminded MTV News that it's no different than any other teen sensation. "Everyone's hysterical about everything, aren't they?" he said. Zombie is currently in the middle of his job guest-editing the MTV Movies Blog leading up to Friday's release of "Halloween II," the sequel to his re-imagining of John Carpenter's classic slasher flick. Exclusive: Doug Hutchison Talks Vampire Killers

20 May 2009 12:33 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

To read “From the mind of Doug Hutchison”, for genre fans anyway, is an invitation to be freaked out. The actor, who has given horror fans such memorable characters as Eugene Victor Tooms in two episodes of “The X Files” – “Squeeze” and “Tooms” (both in Season One of the show), Percy Wetmore, one of Stephen King’s more horrific villains, in Frank Darabont’s The Green Mile and most recently, Henry Victor, the racist and borderline sociopathic Army officer in Jt Petty’s, The Burrowers, is also a writer And serious horror fan himself.

Beginning in October 2008, under the banner of his own production company, Dark Water, Hutchison launched a web series entitled, "Vampire Killers". Set in modern day Los Angeles, the premise is that in a city the size of La, with a vampire population of over 500,000, there are only 4 vampire killers to deal with the problem. And a problem this is indeed. »

Fango Musick Exclusive: Talking Horror & Music with Scott Ian of Anthrax

7 April 2009 1:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

As Fangoria celebrates it’s 30th Anniversary this year, some longtime friends of the magazine are celebrating their own anniversary. On May 12th, Megaforce Records will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Fistful Of Metal, the 1984 debut from Anthrax. Rock and Horror are a match made in heaven hell, and few bands have quite the association with the genre (and Fangoria) as Anthrax.

As the special-edition release of their first album approaches, and with their first studio album in six years, Worship Music (their first with vocalist Dan Nelson) due out this Fall, Fango caught up with members of the band to talk music, and of course, talk horror.

In the first part of Fangoria Musick’s exclusive interviews, James Zahn talks with Anthrax guitarist and lyricist Scott Ian.

John Carpenter’S Vampires (DVD Review)

13 March 2009 9:51 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

While the 1990’s offered few great Vampire films, there were a good fistful of entertaining, and enjoyable contributions. One of which, was helmed by Master of Macabre John Carpenter. Carpenter, who has made a reputation by creating outlandish, and often over-the-top genre pieces rounded up a fitting cast to once again, pull no punches.

Vampires focuses on a group of joyriding vampire hunters led by the erratic Jack (James Woods) Crow. Along with Crow the posse consists of suave tough guy Anthony (Daniel Baldwin) Montoya, Father (Gregory Sierra) Giovanni, and Catlin (longtime genre veteran Mark Boone Junior, who you may recognize from such films as 30 Days Of Night, Wristcutters, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer) amongst others. For this band of mercenaries, the goal is to eliminate the first, and oldest living vampire Jan Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith), before he can locate the Berziers Cross, which holds »

Movies That Deserve a Second Life: Action/Adventure Edition

13 March 2009 2:12 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When referring to a movie that nabbed a second life, typically home video is the savior. There are countless movies that didn’t fare well in their original theatrical runs but have earned a so-called second life thanks to profitable video sales and rentals that make them much stronger than they ever were when they first arrived. Examples of this trend vary greatly, whether you’re referring to genre, era, proliferation (or magnitude of the “second life”) and, of course, how deserving it is. Most that get a boost long after its premiere got where it is now slowly, spread wide by word of mouth and critical re-analysis. Most of them were not well received during the initial run, and many are re-evaluated, and mistakes are mended. Among them: 2001, The Princess Bride, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Big Lebowski, Fight Club, Office Space and Dazed and Confused. These »

Drawing on Your Nightmares: Jo Chen

9 March 2009 8:18 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

This week I want to talk about an artist who blows my mind on a monthly basis — Jo Chen, the cover artist on the bestselling, award-winning Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight.

I know Buffy’s not a straight-up horror book — it deals with elements from the genre, but the emotional vibe is different, more optimistic and easily redemptive. Buffy’s a prime example of how the material in this genre has leaked into the mainstream. Here’s another: last night they were playing the old Martin Sheen movie, The Believers, on a weird local station called This — “This,” that’s the name of the station. (It sends me into an Abbott and Costello routine.) But This shows cool old movies and TV shows—I can’t imagine what their program manifesto is, unless it’s off-the-beaten-path-stuff-Scott-might-find-interesting.

Now, The Believers is not a good movie, but when I was a »

Five Things I Love About John Carpenter

21 January 2009 10:25 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Good Lord!  How long have I been gone?  Well, here's the deal, Fangorians.  You may or may not know that I took over as team captain for Blog@Newsarama, with my new group kicking things off on December 1st.  I also made some preparations for my original site, ShotgunReviews.com, to begin celebrating its Tenth Year online.  Needless to say, it's been busy.  But I haven't wanted to neglect my Fango friends, so I've been giving a lot of thought to what to do for the third installment of this (now more) regular series.  The first two go-rounds, I talked '31 Frankenstein and Dracula.  I really kicked around covering Spanish Dracula, and I Will get back to that eventually.  Today, though, I've decided to cover someone that's still in the game.  And I'll begin with this question: between 1978 and 1988, was there a genre director that had a better run than John Carpenter? »
