Exclusive Interview: Ming-Na (Stargate Universe)

4 December 2009 3:06 PM, PST | TVStar | See recent TVStar news »

Ming-Na is a sci-fi/horror/action/animation goddess. Okay, that's a bit extreme; we'll cop to that. But, even though most people connect her with the long-running series ER (TV) or maybe the films The Joy Luck Club or One Night Stand, consider her other credits: Terminal Voyage, Street Fighter, Mulan (she was the voice of the title character), Spawn, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, The Batman, Kingdom Hearts II, Prom Night, and Push. And now she's one of the stars of the latest Stargate adventure, Stargate Universe (TV). On Syfy's ensemble series, Ming-Na plays Camile Wray, who -- like her shipmates -- is stuck on a runaway alien spacecraft countless light years from home. "Justice," the mid-season finale of Sgu, will air tonight. PopStar recently chatted exclusively with Ming-Na about the show. During the interview, she previewed "Justice," talked in depth about her character -- who happens to be »

“Mulan” Movie Posters

25 November 2009 3:53 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Check out five new “Mulan” movie posters.

Mulan” is a famous Walt Disney animated feature film about the mythical Chinese woman warrior who pretends to be a male to replace his old father from the Emperor’s ruthless army conscription.

Mulan was first shown in June 1998 and earned $304 million box office figure worldwide ($121 million in Us). Ming-Na provided the character voice while Lea Salonga of the Philippines provided the singing voice. The film out-grossed the two Disney films – Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules. Despite the negative reactions from the film critics and some feminist groups, this animated movie has still won recognition from Annie Awards and the theme song “Reflections” had some nominations from Golden Globe awards.

The new “Mulan” stars Wei Zhao (Red Cliff, Painted Skin), Chen Kun and Jaycee Chan, son of Hongkong action superstar Jackie Chan and is directed by Jingle Ma with Wei Dong as co-director. »

Interview with Ming-Na

17 November 2009 10:37 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

In taking on the role of International Oversight Committee (Ioa) officer aboard the Destiny in SyFy's Stargate Universe, actress Ming-Na is exploring perhaps even more uncharted territory than her character, Camile Wray. Stargate's Camille is the first Asian American lesbian on a primetime broadcast or basic cable show, and one of only a few Asian American lesbian or bisexual characters ever on primetime American TV. She's also the Stargate franchise's first lesbian character.

The actress, who began her career on a soap opera (As the World Turns) before getting her big break in The Joy Luck Club (1993) and going on to star in ER (from 1995 to 2004), has embraced her role in the Stargate universe, where soldiers and scientists interact with alien races while aboard an ancient ship locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth.

AfterEllen.com recently spoke to Ming-Na about the show and this week's episode, »

Boy Culture on a new book of letters that's a must have for Grey Gardens fans

Netflix is streaming The Wizard of Oz for free (today only)

Art Net Kirsten Dunst goes Harajuku for artist Takashi Murakami. I saw his last show in Brooklyn featuring anime characters with shape-shifting ejaculate and whatnot. Very crazy / racy / grotesque stuff. I ♥ Kiki... anxious for a new film right about now

In Contention Guy asks the question we all must ask every year if we really care about the movies and not just Oscar. What are precursors for anyway? I'm happy to have Guy by my side in the good fight

She Wired This is a complicated first but Ming-Na (The Joy Luck Club) is now playing the first lesbian Asian-American series regular with her new role on Star Gate Universe. My first reaction is Star Gate is still on? My second is more appropriate: 'congratulates Mulan'! »

Concept Art Time: Rapunzel

11 August 2009 10:06 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

If any of you remember the part in Enchanted where the character Gisele (played by Amy Adams) sings ‘That’s How You Know’, there is one part where she appears on stage singing with a little girl in the middle of a Rapunzel play.

Yes, that was an easter egg of sorts for Disney’s next animated feature after The Princess and the Frog called Rapunzel. Making their way down the princess line, it was inevitable that Walt Disney Pictures would go to this classic fairy tale of sorts. While everyone is completely in awe over the possible rise back to Disney’s golden age with Princess & the Frog, and completely taken away by Pixar’s Toy Story 1-3 making its way into theaters between October to June of next year, Rapunzel is going almost completely unnoticed. Well that’s where I come in, showing off the concept art of »

20 Greatest Classic Disney Villains

11 June 2009 2:50 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The saying goes that the hero of your story is only as great as your villain, On podcast #124 I made a bold statement that the key difference between classic Disney movies and Pixar films is their villains. I love Pixar films, but in my mind classic Disney movies like The Jungle Book and The Lion King are still superior films, principally because they all have the missing ingredient Pixar lacks; iconic, classic and memorable villains. Pixar films are anything but weak, some credit must go towards the heroic characters who inspire courage, hope and charm their ways into our hears, but the same can't be said about the Pixar characters whose job it is to create havoc and fear with their malicious deeds. Whether you love or hate Disney, it cannot be denied that they have come up with some greatest on screen villains in movie-making history. Here is my »

Aardman Animations Sets Up Pirates! and Arthur Christmas with Sony

28 April 2009 2:50 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Back in 2005, Nick Park and the folks at Aardman Animations won an Oscar for their work on Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. A year later, their follow-up film Flushed Away disappointed at the box office and prompted Dreamworks to sever their partnership. Since then we haven't heard much from the British studio, save for one new made-for-tv Wallace & Gromit adventure, but they did land a deal with Sony Pictures and now they're finally ready to tell us about some of projects they've got cooking. One of the films is a holiday-themed feature called Arthur Christmas, which "tackles the question of how Santa delivers all his presents in one night". Sarah Smith and Barry Cook (Mulan) will direct the movie, which will be computer animated, based on a script by Peter Baynham (Borat, Bruno). The other project, which I'm a bit more interested in, is a stop motion animated project called Pirates! »

Ming-Na to Play a Lesbian on "Stargate Universe"

20 April 2009 8:10 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Following on the heels of Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate Atlantis, the latest Stargate series — Stargate Universe, or Sgu — will include the franchise's first lesbian cast member: political attaché Camille Wray, played by veteran Chinese-American actress Ming-Na Wen (pictured, right).

The franchise began with the 1994 feature film Stargate, and has since spawned three live-action series, an animated series (Stargate Infinity), video games (Stargate Worlds), novels, and comics.

The Stargate universe is one in which soldiers and scientists from contemporary Earth interact with alien races possessing far superior technology via a top-secret Stargate (pictured below) that utilizes wormholes to quickly transport people and objects to cosmic locations far away.

Here's the official description of the new series from Sci Fi channel's press release about the series in February:

Edgier and younger in tone, Sgu will take the franchise in a dynamic new direction, appealing to longtime Stargate fans and first-time viewers alike. »
