'Blind Side' Tackles Post-Thanksgiving Blahs

Though The Blind Side still packed a wallop, the movies as a whole saw a typical post-Thanksgiving slide over the weekend. However, due to the momentum from last weekend's record Thanksgiving gross, overall business was the highest the timeframe has ever seen (although not in terms of attendance), up 21 percent over the same period last year.
As indicated by their close grosses last weekend, The Blind Side out-paced The Twilight Saga: New Moon to claim the top spot. Down 49 percent, the football-themed drama had the best hold among nationwide releases, racking up an estimated $20.4 million. With a super $129.3 million tally in just 17 days, it surpassed Rocky IV to become the highest-grossing sports drama on record (though it 's still a far cry off in terms of attendance). Among football movies, only the Adam Sandler comedies The Waterboy and The Longest Yard made more, and Blind Side will soon overtake them as well.

Adam Sandler is onboard for the Columbia Pictures film, Jack And Jill. The film is a romantic comedy produced through Sandler's own company Happy Madison. He will be playing Jack and his twin sister, Jill - this marks the first time in the Sandler's career that he will be playing opposite himself in a feature film.
Todd Garner, producer on Paul Bart: Mall Cop, brought the film to Happy Madison. Steve Koren, who has been working with Sandler on and off since their days on Saturday Night Live, penned the screenplay.
Sandler, who recently starred in Judd Apatow's Funny People, will next hit the screen in Sony's Grown Ups, a high-school reunion comedy about four friends who reunite for a Fourth of July holiday weekend. The actor is also set to reteam with The Waterboy director Frank Coraci to lend his voice to the MGM/Sony comedy The Zookeeper.

Adam Sandler's going to be getting in touch with his feminine side in the romantic comedy Jack and Jill. Sandler, last seen playing a dying stand-up comic in Funny People, will be taking on both starring roles in Jack and Jill, playing Jack and his twin sister, Jill. And I just have to say right now that I'm not sure I want to see Sandler in drag for an entire feature film... I guess it depends on how he plays it.
Variety reports Sandler's producing the pic through his Happy Madison production company. Click writer Steve Koren is working on the screenplay. Filming is expected to begin early next year with Sony aiming for a 2011 release.
Sandler recently completed work on Grown Ups with his frequent collaborators Rob Schneider, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade. He's also busy monkeying around on The Zookeeper, providing the voice of a

The Waterboy
Directed by: Frank Coraci
Cast: Adam Sandler, Kathy Bates, Henry Winkler
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: August 4, 2009
Plot: A losing football team enlists its gentle yet aggressively sensitive water boy (Sandler) Bobby Boucher to boost their defense and team morale.
Who’s It For? Most obviously, anyone who can appreciate the zanier side of Adam Sandler. But the inclusion of notable figures from the football world, like Bill Cowher and Jimmy Johnson, will entertain sports fans alike.
Movie:
Fitting nicely into a classic triumvirate consisting of Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy is another proud moment in his comedic career that makes the most out of a paper thin premise. The humor is successfully wacky, especially with the full support of seasoned faces likes Winkler and Bates. The memorable characters of The Waterboy even make the goofy movie a bit endearing,

Chicago – You won’t find the kind of diversity that exists in HollywoodChicago.com’s Blu-Ray Round-Up too many places online. Where else can modern sci-fi mingle with quarter-century-old genre product and hang out with Oscar winners and slapstick comedies? Nowhere.
The Round-Up is our regular informational column about titles that may have slipped under your radar just because they haven’t been on the cover of Entertainment Weekly or in the point-of-purchase slot at your local Blu-Ray store. Today’s edition of the Round-Up is particularly impressive with a massive comedy hit from Adam Sandler, a sci-fi cult classic, a great new TV show, and the film that made Billy Bob Thornton a star.
“Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead” was released on July 28th, 2009.
“Sling Blade,” and “The Waterboy” were released on August 4th, 2009.
“The Last Starfighter” will be released on August 18th, 2009.

Adam Sandler was once the 100 million dollar man and the Waterboy was one of his comedies that made lots of money at the box office. It probably isn.t as funny today as it was when it made all that money and the Blu-ray adds little to the package. Bobby Boucher (Adam Sandler) is a hapless man-child who acts as a water boy for the University of Louisiana Cougars coached by the driven Red Beaulieu (Jerry Reed). Bobby has lived a sheltered life due to his overprotective mother (Kathy Bates). Bobby loses his purpose when Beaulieu fires him from the team and he agrees to work for free for the downtrodden team the South Central Louisiana State University

DVD Playhouse—August 2009
By
Allen Gardner
Watchmen—Director’S Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday

“Well I like school, and I like football, and I’m gonna keep doin’ ‘em both because they make me feel good!”
It’s easy to sympathize with Bobby Boucher. He’s been sheltered to a rather unhealthy degree his entire life, with so much potential for something more. A rather culturally clueless and socially naïve individual, Boucher nevertheless has more than a healthy helping of tenderness to give, if only given the opportunity. At his core, he just loves helping people, but consistent harassment and gales of stupid laughter from most everyone he lends a helping hand to only serve to inspire Darkman-style bursts of superhuman fury. And that’s just what this team needs!
You didn’t come in here for a theoretical analysis of this flick from eleven years ago. Frankly I’m not sure what you’d be interested in hearing about The Waterboy more than a decade after its release.

Unfortunately it's a very bad week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, but let's rundown the list anyway as maybe some of you are looking forward to at least renting one or two of these.
The Soloist
The best new film of the bunch has to be The Soloist, but even it isn't a stand-out masterpiece by any stretch. It does have a couple of good performances and is certainly worth a once over, but as far as being a purchase I would definitely recommend against it.
Mutant Chronicles
This action-sci-fi feature starring Thomas Jane, John Malkovich and Ron Perlman is probably the title I am most interested in renting and a little upset I forgot to request a review copy, but Netflix will take care of that.
Race to Witch Mountain
Ugh, just a bad, bad movie. Kids may

Ask 'Funny People' Stars Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann a Question

The comedy 'Funny People' has so many great things going for it, it's almost hard to keep track.
For one thing, it's directed by Judd Apatow, the comic -- is "genius" too strong a word? -- behind 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' and 'Knocked Up.'
And then there are the stars: Adam Sandler, the former 'SNL' star who's known for crowd-pleasing comedies like 'Big Daddy' and 'The Waterboy,' but who's done his share of introspective dramas as well ('Punch-Drunk Love,' 'Spanglish,' 'You Don't Mess With the Zohan' ... Ok, kidding about that last one).

It seems Kevin James has been promoted from mall cop to zookeeper in the upcoming comedy called... wait for it... The Zookeeper. (Let's hope he doesn't play a combination analyst/therapist in his next movie.) James' character is a bit lacking in knowledge when it comes to the ladies, so the animals in his charge take notice and try to help him win Rosario Dawson's heart. How you ask? By talking to him and sharing their own relationship advice!
Variety has just revealed the A-list talent that will be providing the voices for the animals includes Adam Sandler as a monkey, Jon Favreau as a bear, Sylvester Stallone as a lion, Cher as a giraffe, and Judd Apatow as an elephant.
The Zookeeper is being directed by Frank Coraci, whose sole quality film (The Wedding Singer) was made over ten years ago. Since then he's brought us The Waterboy, Around The World In 80 Days

The Waterboy star Peter Dante is seeking a restraining order against a man he alleges threatened to cut off his manhood.
The actor filed suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court claiming an unidentified male had been harassing him over the phone and at his son's Little League baseball games.
The man allegedly accused Dante of calling his wife. The star admits he used to talk to the man's partner six months ago - but hasn't had contact with her since.
In the papers filed, Dante claims the man threatened to "cut my d**k off and shove it down my throat."

Hot off the box office success of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Kevin James is heading to the zoo.
James will star in the upcoming MGM comedy, The Zookeeper, from The Waterboy director Frank Coraci. According to Variety, MGM paid $2 million for the script from Jay Scherick and Davd Ronn who co-wrote Norbit with Eddie Murphy. Yes, Norbit.
The former King of Queens funny-man (who is surprisingly nimble) will play a lonely zookeeper who has an intervention from his pals...the zoo animals.
Mall Cop is been a huge success for Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company, beating projections by a mile with a total of nearly $100 million in the U.S. alone.
