After last week’s Donna-lite episode “Midnight,” we get its opposite number. The Doctor barely makes an appearance in “Turn Left” but he’s conspicuous by his absence in an episode that’s essentially about his absence. Tricked into playing host to a reality-altering insect that looks like it’s on loan from David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch adaptation, Donna spends the hour wandering a universe in which she and the Doctor never had their Christmas rendezvous and, consequently, the Doctor died. It’s a variation on a Christmas favorite, It’s A Wonderful Life, only with the total destruction of London in place of Zuzu’s petals. Christmas comes early, and repeatedly, this year. In a setup reminiscent of Sliding Doors, it all comes down to a single element of one day’s commute. Specifically, the moment when Donna decided to stick with her temp job downtown, which eventually

Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow considered retiring at the age of 31 because she had "no interest in making movies any more".
The Sliding Doors star took a career hiatus following the birth of her first child, Apple, in 2004 with husband Chris Martin.
Paltrow remained on her self-imposed maternity leave until after the birth of the couple's second child, Moses, in 2006.
And the 35-year-old admits she considered never going back to the film business.
She says, "I thought about doing that (retiring) because I really felt that way. I had no interest in making movies any more.
"I didn't know if it would ever come back. And as it turns out, it did.
"I didn't die. I'm not being resurrected. But I never want to work in the same way I worked in my former life. Never. It's too expensive for me to be away (from my children)."

Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow binged on junk food after she gave up her strict macrobiotic diet while pregnant with her daughter Apple.
The Sliding Doors star spent years following the super-healthy regime which only allowed her to eat staple foods such as brown rice, beans and vegetables - banning processed and sugary items.
But Paltrow quit the diet when she found out she was pregnant with Apple, now three, with husband Chris Martin. She later gave birth to the couple's second child Moses in 2006.
And Paltrow insists she now eats a variety of fatty foods, which were previously banned.
She says, "I was macrobiotic for four years. But when I got pregnant I couldn't go near anything healthy. I love Branston pickle, red wine and anything fried like fish and chips."

Gwyneth Paltrow is "pleased" she has managed to retain her status as an A-list actress - as she feared she would have been replaced by "younger, prettier" stars after returning from her maternity break.
The Sliding Doors star took a career hiatus following the birth of her first child, Apple, in 2004 with husband Chris Martin.
And Paltrow remained on her self-imposed maternity leave until after the birth of the couple's second child, Moses, in 2006.
The star has since returned to work but she insists she was initially scared that she would face rejections from studio bosses after her time out of the movie industry.
She says, "I've been away from Hollywood for a long time and so I'm pleased to have been remembered. There are so many younger, prettier actresses in Hollywood that I didn't think producers would pick me.
"Hollywood does have a short memory and can forget about you."

Gwyneth Paltrow loves getting dressed up in sexy outfits for showbiz events - because she is a "frump" when she is at home.
The Sliding Doors star indulges her love of glamorous clothes and high heels when she is in the gaze of the media but insists posh outfits make a refreshing change from her usual attire.
She says, "Most of my heels are small. They're only four or five inches. But at home I'm more like sweat pants and Ugg boots (sheepskin boots).
"I'm a bit frumpy. It's shocking!"
