Big-name directors add weight to David Fincher's Heavy Metal

8 June 2009 1:47 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

In March last year, it was announced that Paramount Pictures was to make a new animated film based on the 70s sci-fi fantasy magazine Heavy Metal.

Director David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) signed on to spearhead the project, which would consist of eight or nine separate segments, each based on one of the magazine's serials.

Fincher would direct one of the segments and Kevin Eastman, co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would direct another. It's worth adding that Eastman is also the owner and publisher of the American magazine. He bought the title in 1991.

Tim Miller, whose Blur Studios would handle the animation, was also to direct a segment of the R-rated, adult-themed feature.

After that, all went quiet, with Entertainment Weekly reporting that Paramount bosses had become jittery about the idea and felt it was "too risqué".

'Heavy Metal' Gets Heavier with Fincher, Cameron, and Verbinski

Film School Rejects is reporting that Kevin Eastman, co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has spilled some major beans on the remake of Heavy Metal, the totally over-the-top 1981 sci-fi flick full of boobies, violence, and, some might say, awesomeness.

Eastman wrote Heavy Metal 2000, which stars former Penthouse Pet Julie Strain, who is also, incidentally, Eastman's ex-wife. She also voiced Heavy Metal 2000 and starred in the Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 video game. Eastman told Fsr,

"I've got breaking news that Fincher and James Cameron are going to be co-executive Producers on the film. Fincher will direct one. Cameron will direct one. Zack Snyder is going to direct one and Gore Verbinski is going to. Mark Osborne and Jack Black from Tenacious D are going to do a comedy segment for the film. Three other directors have agreed but we haven't signed them, but they're equally as jaw-dropping. »

Kevin Eastman Breaks Out of His Shell with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The co-creator of the popular series talks about the series' origins, the 25th Anniversary of the creation, the newly-announced film, Heavy Metal and more.

25 years ago, Kevin Eastman's idea that he co-hatched with Peter Laird came to fruition when the first issue of radical new comic called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hit the comic book stands. Soon thereafter, a licensing phenomena was born that spawned into the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated TV series, the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, including 2007's Tmnt. The series that Eastman and Laird started is celebrating its 25th anniversary and, in conjunction with the anniversary, a new DVD set is being released featuring four separate sets that form the animated series' seventh season with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 7, Pt. 1 - The Leonardo Slice, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 7, Pt. 2 - The Michelangelo Slice, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 7, Pt. »
