The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

John Cusack reflects on his career

7 November 2009 2:58 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

The star of so many great films, from "Grosse Pointe Blank" to "War, Inc.", actor John Cusack spoke to "Extra" and revealed a reflective mood as he shared he felt "old" on the 20th anniversary of his bittersweet classic coming of age film, "Say Anything." Cusack was happy the film had legs and still resonated with a wide audience, and was grateful so many people still loved the movie, which hit theaters in April 1989. A special 20th anniversary DVD was released on Nov. 3. "It's nice to be talking about something that you did 20 years ago," he told "Extra" at the junket for his new action flick, '2012,' out Nov. 13. "I just remember it being »

Olympic Games In Chicago And John Cusack In North Korea In Today's Twitter-Wood

30 September 2009 6:10 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Barack Obama has at least one passionate backer in Twitter-Wood for his Chicago Olympics pitch. Jeremy Piven tweeted support for his home city today, as the International Olympic Committee makes its final decision in Copenhagen. John Cusack, meanwhile, continued his intercontinental rounds and tweets today upon leaving North Korea for Japan, though it's anyone's guess how he got in there in the first place.

In lighter tweetage, "Twilight" actor Justin Chon continued his TwitPic marathon, Christopher Mintz-Plasse took a shot of his sleeping dad, and Miley Cyrus showed what her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus does to cheer her up when she's down. They're all in an unexpected Father Appreciation Special today. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for September 30, 2009.

Twitter Pic of the Day:

@mileycyrus These are the times that my daddy Really comes in handy. He made me smile through the worst pain I've ever felt. http://pic. »

Interview: Jeremy Piven

12 August 2009 8:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's rare that even a movie's biggest fan can recall all of the little throwaway lines of dialogue and performance details from supporting players. But if that supporting player is Jeremy Piven, you can almost guarantee it will come immediately to mind, whether he's an assaultive partygoer who turns introspective during a Gas 'N Sip hangout session in Say Anything, or a pal searching for romantic redemption during his high school reunion in Grosse Pointe Blank. Finally in charge of his own film, The Goods, Piven is no less generous with his comedic set-ups, sharing the screen with a talented ensemble of players (including Ving Rhames, Katheryn Hahn and Rob Riggle) who find themselves tasked with the challenge of liquidating an entire dealership's stock of cars over the Fourth of July holiday.

Cinematical recently spoke to Piven via telephone to discuss his participation in the film, which is produced by »

Hot Tub Time Machine!

24 July 2009 10:53 AM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

I'm not sure if any of next year's movies will have a better title than Hot Tub Time Machine, but I doubt it. The self-explanatory comedy features John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke and the omnipresent Craig Robinson as a bunch of dudes who drink too much and get bounced back to 1986. The flick comes from Cusack cohort Steve Pink (Grosse Pointe Blank, High Fidelity) and also features Crispin Glover, Lizzy Caplan and Chevy Chase. Check out the R-rated clip below! »

George Clooney to star in A Very Private Gentleman

19 May 2009 9:53 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

In news form the Cannes film festival, Focus Features is working on an adaptation of Martin Booth’s novel A Very Private Gentleman. Variety reports George Clooney will star in the film to be directed by Anton Corbijn.

Rowan Joffe is scripting the story that revolves around an assassin who resists his typical aversion to human interaction before his final assignment in a small Italian town. The relationships he creates complicate his assigned work. Filming is set begin in Italy this fall.

Having not read the novel, I am picturing some sort of cross between two other assassin films I enjoyed, Grosse Pointe Blank and In Bruges, but with fewer laughs. With that in mind, I’m looking forward to this project.

John Cusack, Rob Corddry, and Crispin Glover Jumped in a Hot Tub...

2 May 2009 3:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I've been dying to know what would become of Hot Tub Time Machine ever since it got bought by MGM a year ago. It's the coolest time-traveling device since a phone box, and it had a decent pitch to boot, about "a group of guys, adults who used to be cads back in their heyday, who, after a night of vodka and Red Bulls in a hot rub, travel back in time and set out to rediscover their 'mojo.'" In December, writer Josh Heald assured us that it would be funny, and then we learned that John Cusack, Rob Corddry, and Craig Robinson signed on in February. Now it's getting a few more.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that Crispin 'Get Your Damn Hands Off Her' Glover has signed on, along with Sebastian Stan (The Education of Charlie Banks) and Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield). So, as it stands: the guys go »

Crispin Glover, Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield) and Sebastian Stan (TV’s Kings) have signed on to star alongside John Cusack and Rob Corddry in MGM’s upcoming comedy Hot Tub Time Machine. They then get in a hot tub — which happens to be a time machine — and get transported to 1987. Caplan will play the lone woman in the story: April, a romantic interest of Cusack's character. Glover is playing Phil, a one-armed, accident-prone bellhop at Silver Peaks Lodge. Stan will play Blaine, the ski-jock nemesis of Corddry's character. Craig Robinson and Clark Duke (Sex Drive) also star. Steve Pink is directing. Pink has collaborated with Cusack before, having written and produced the comedies Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. John Cusack Gets in a ‘Hot Tub’

24 February 2009 12:05 PM, PST | MovieBlog.Ugo.com | See recent Ugo MovieBlog news »

I’m not sure how I feel about this. According to Variety, John Cusack and Rob Corddry have signed on with MGM to make the hilarious and terribly titled, Hot Tub Time Machine. Directed by Steve Pink (a contributing writer on High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank) the story involves childhood friends returning to an old mountain cabin party spot, where they get in the aforementioned hot tub. From there, and I can’t wait to see how they explain this, the 40-somethings are transported back to 1987. Ugh. The suddenly ubiquitous Craig Robinson and the Dwight Schrute-clone new comer Clark Duke are also in talks to co-star. Eighties nostalgia is nothing new (Romie and Michelle’s High School Reunion anyone?), but never before have I seen one actor actually come to embody the movement like Cusack. It’s hard to stay mad at the guy, though, he’s just so damn charming and affable. »

John Cusack Takes Hot Tub Time Machine

23 February 2009 10:35 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

John Cusack is in talks to star in the Ronseal-titled comedy, Hot Tub Time Machine, thus bringing possible salvation to a project we had previously written off because… well, it’s called Hot Tub Time Machine. The plot, such as it is, will see Cusack and a group of friends – including Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson, who specialise in knocking comedic cameos out of the park – return to a ski lodge that they used to frequent as teens. When they climb into a hot tub, they find that it’s actually a time machine that transports them back to 1987, where they presumably get a chance to right the wrongs of their lives and watch their younger selves be utter dicks. When the MGM project was first announced a couple of months ago, we were flabbergasted that someone – in this case, screenwriter Josh Heald – not only came up with this plot and title, »
