This year was a pretty good year for Scifi films and despite some disappointments I must admit that 2009 was a pretty good year for scifi film fans young and old with a nice mix of films to suit all tastes.
Two films that did not make my list because they did not play anywhere near me were The Road and Moon. Both films looked truly fantastic and were high on my list to watch but alas the distributors released the film very poorly so only the critics and a select group of film fans got to see both films. I am sure that they both would have made my top list if I had a chance to see them.
So with that said and done here are the 10 Best Scifi Films of 2009 as I see it.

It makes sense that Nimrod Antal would cast one of the stars of his Armored film to be part of the ensemble cast that is Predators. The cast is shaping up as it has 2 Academy Award winning actors in it, never thought I’d say that about a Predators film. Fishbourne joins Adrien Brody in the film. Aliens aren’t new to Fishbourne as he battled the non-corporeal kind in Event Horizon.
Fishburne, has been cast in a pivotal role in the upcoming re-boot. The actor, who is best known for his work in films such as The Matrix series, Apocalypse Now and Deep Cover, and is currently starring in CBS’s mega-hit series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
He will be playing the role of Noland, details on the character are unknown but he did begin working on the film this week in Austin, Texas at producer Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios.

Those of you who are looking forward to the fourth installment in the Resident Evil franchise, entitled Resident Evil: Afterlife, will have to wait a while longer before you get to see it. Shock Till You Drop has learned that studio Screen Gems has pushed back the fourth Resident Evil from its originally planned release date of August 27th, 2010, until January 14th, 2011. That’s almost five more months without a new Resident Evil movie in all our lives…
…However will we survive?!
So why has the studio delayed the fim? Well, if you’ve been following the news about it, you’ll know Resident Evil 4 is being done in 3D (it was only a matter of time…) by none other than the team that worked on James Cameron’s Avatar. If nothing else it should make the movie worth watching just to see if it even comes close to

Another Sci-Fi Remake with The Black Hole

There are a lot of sci-fi movies getting remade including one my favorite films that really changed modern sci-fi, Forbidden Planet.
Now Disney’s The Black Hole, another personal favorite of mine is getting remade and Tron Legacy duo are the ones who are going develop the remake from the 1979 film.
Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey have teamed up with writer Travis Beacham for the reinvention of The Black Hole, a 1979 Disney sci-fi film that held the record for most expensive Disney movie at the time of its making.
The original film followed a group of space explorers aboard the USS Palomino who come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. Inside the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist, commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that

Disney Remaking 'The Black Hole' With 'Tron' Team

It's a new day at Disney with their new studio chief, Rich Ross, and everyone has been rather eager to see what new direction the studio moved in, and what projects they fast tracked. It turns out that their new vision is a rather old one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has dug deep into the vaults and decided to remake The Black Hole. They've put Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and producer Sean Bailey on the project, hoping that they can make The Black Hole as cool as they've made all things Tron.
I feel terrible, but I have absolutely no memory of this film. I know I probably saw it at some point, but its lovable droids have been wiped out by multiple viewings of Star Wars, so allow me to recap. The 1979 original centered on a group of space explorers discover the lost USS Cygnus, floating

Sam Neill, who you might have spotted yesterday on the Daybreakers poster, has today signed up to join Zack Snyder's animated film Guardians of Ga'Hoole, currently in production in Sydney. He rounds out a largely antipodean cast, but one which appears not to include Hugh Jackman, who had been rumoured for a role. As long-time Event Horizon fans, we're secretly hoping that whatever his role, it includes the line, "Do you see? Do You See?" somewhere.Ahem. We do know that Jim Sturgess voices the lead role of Soren, a young owl kidnapped by the dastardly orphanage of St. Aggies, where young birds are secretly trained to become soldiers. Instead, Soren is determined to join the Guardians of Ga'Hoole and fight for truth, justice and the right to turn your head through nearly 360°.Also in the cast are (deep breath) Abbie Cornish, Emily Barclay, Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten,

Another day, another animal-biting vampire called Edward - but while this one's still a bit mopey, Ethan Hawke's take on the undead in Daybreakers is very different from Twilight. For one thing, he lives in a world full of vampires. For another, the blood they all depend on is running out.Directed by the Spierig brothers, the film also stars Sam Neill channelling Event Horizon as the smooth-but-sinister head of a major blood corporation and Willem Dafoe as the leader of a group of rebels against the bloodsucking status quo.Daybreakers is out, after a very long delay, next January 8.

New Daybreakers PSA Reminds You to Turn in Humans

Earlier this summer, we posted a great trailer for the upcoming modern vampire tale Daybreakers. The first time I watched the trailer was in the theater before watching The Final Destination and all I could think was “Wow, I wanna watch that instead!” How can a movie go wrong with actors like Ethan Hawke (Gattaca), Sam Neil (Event Horizon) and Willem Dafoe (John Carter of Mars)? The answer – You can’t!
Set in a (obvious) future, fictional world where vampires have just about converted every human to be a stalker of the night, Daybreakers takes the unique approach of applying modern day situations and geopolitical statements to the vampires – they are slowly running out of food (read: blood) and have begun farming humans for just their blood, think The Matrix but with plasma.
A group of humans, lead by the crossbow wielding Elvis (Dafoe), survive outside of the blood farms and while Edward (seriously?

Halloween List-Making Invades The MTV Newsroom

For this week's final Halloween movies list, I decided to turn hit up the real superstars: my co-workers here in the MTV Newsroom who keep this great ship moving every damn day. After the jump you'll find recommendations and reminiscences from around the office. If you're game for some heavy reading, make sure to check out the last write-up, detailing Joel Hanek's pick: "Ernest Scared Stupid." Oh yes, he went there.
As for myself (MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg), it's a toss-up. To this day I still have occasional nightmares relating to "Candyman," the Bernard Rose-directed, Virginia Madsen-starring horror flick based on a tale by novelist Clive Barker. There's something uniquely terrifying about the Candyman's ability to attack at any time, day or night. When horror can touch you even in the relative safety of sunlight, that's something to fear.
The other one that still gets me,

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'. I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!
25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen.

Pandorum Review + Exclusive Unseen Concept Art

Year: 2009
Directors: Christian Alvart
Writers: Travis Milloy
IMDb: link
Trailer: link
Review by: agentorange
Rating: 8 out of 10
[Editor's note: We usually don't post reviews this long after a film's domestic release but since Pandorum is being criminally underrated by mainstream critics and is getting a staggered release across the rest of the world, we're making an exception]
Pandorum is a lean, mean terror machine of a movie that goes right for the jugular and never lets up for a single minute. It's a tense, claustrophobic nightmare vision wrapped in a scifi disguise that's sometimes illogical but always thrilling. More importantly though, it's the perfect escape from this never-ending cycle of teen slashers, 80s retreads and zombie / vampire overload (yes, I chose to see this over Zombieland).
If Pandorum was called "Avp: Pandorum," or "Resident Evil: Pandorum," critics would be falling all over themselves to praise Alvart for his economy of style and storytelling, declaring the film an instant win and return to form for the franchises. But since there isn't an established brand attached to the it, most critics seem to be at a loss, quick to damn it

What's Up at the Squads

Well, it's October now, and just as all sites set their... well, sights on all things horror, Horror Squad's been ahead of the curve by covering it all year round! A-ha!
Seriously, though, as Weinberg told you, we've kicked off our Fates Worse Than Death series -- today's entry from yours truly regards that ever grisly Event Horizon. (Your suggestions are also welcome.) Peter's got the latest on the best in this week's genre discs (Trick 'r Treat, ho!), and newbie Brad McHargue keeps up the Fantastic Fest coverage with his look at Jake West's horror-comedy, Doghouse.
Mind you, the Sci-Fi Squad crew ain't slouching either, whether it's concerning their new genre DVDs of the week, their Fantastic Fest interview with Stingray Sam director Cory McAbee, their wonderfully gonzo glimpse at next month's disaster-tastic 2012, and a gallery of the downright geekiest tattoos I have ever seen.
So get crackin'!

Pandorum review. (5/5). The best science fiction horror since Aliens.

Two of the most impressive films I’ve seen this year fall into the science fiction genre. The first being the South African “District 9” from Neill Blomkamp and now “Pandorum” under the skilled hand of director Christian Alvart.
This was a film I was eager to view since first coming across it and, although I had great expectations, they were easily surpassed. I find that the film is a clever mixture of various potent films in the same genre with elements of 1997’s gory “Event Horizon” by Paul W.S. Anderson, the Barry Levinson film “Sphere” of 1998 and the exceptional 2005 cave horror “The Descent” from Neil Marshall.

Warning: This review contains minor spoilers, when noted.
It feels like genuine sci-fi, humans vs. aliens films are few and far between these days. Which is why, after seeing the trailer for Pandorum, I was so excited. Fortunately, Pandorum won’t disappoint any die-hard fans of sci-fi, especially if you’re also a lover of the blend of sci-fi and horror.
Pandorum centers around Bower (played quite convincingly by Ben Foster), who wakes up from extended hypersleep on a spacecraft, with no idea who he is or why he’s on the ship. Soon after, Payton (Dennis Quaid), wakes up too, and they join forces to try to figure out where they are and why in the world they’re awake. As they gain back their memories, they realize they’re not the only humans on board…and that humans aren’t the only things on board.

Now in theaters everywhere is Pandorum, the third film by Christian Alvart, yet the second to hit theaters – a coincidence or maybe something a bit more telling? While Pandorum is far from a bad movie, it’s so incredibly generic that it’s hard to recommend to anyone outside genre fans looking forward to seeing it… read more [Bloody Disgusting]
The film starts with two space crew members Bower (Ben Foster) and Payton (Dennis Quaid) waking up from a multi-year hyper-sleep to discover that the ship they are on is dying in power resources. Neither of them can remember the mission due to the fact that they have been sleeping for so long which has the side effect of mild to severe memory loss. Bower volunteers to try to get to the ship’s core reactor up and running as it comes on and off to give the ship spurts of power.

Pandorum comes to us "from the makers of Resident Evil and Event Horizon", which would normally be construed as a warning sign, but I think it's sort of a blessing. Yes, Paul W.S. Anderson is the director of Resident Evil, Event Horizon, and the man responsible for bringing us one of the greatest vehicles in cinema history, The Dreadnaught in Death Race. However, he is merely producing this film, which turns out to be a wonderful hybrid of Resident Evil and Event horizon that's actually better than the the films it's stealing from. (Or paying homage to, depending on your definition). Yes, Pand

Ever since Alien was pitched as “a haunted house movie in space” 30 years ago, it seems like there have been more of those damned houses out amongst the stars than there have been on Earth. Genre fans (particularly those who have frequented the Sci Fi/Syfy channel) have long gotten used to the sight of interstellar travelers creeping/running down futuristic corridors in search of/away from some cosmic threat or other. Pandorum, produced by the team behind one of the bigger/gorier examples of the subgenre, Event Horizon, is a fairly successful attempt to do something a little different with the formula.
The opening scenes get the movie off to an effectively claustrophobic/mysterious start, as a young man suddenly awakens in a cryogenic sleep pod somewhere within the bowels of an expansive spacecraft (which we’re told at the start is the Elysium, on a colonization run to
