Kevin Smith's Red State Closer to Reality?

8 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Appears so. The Kevin Smith-penned horror film may finally come to fruition. If you recall, the Chasing Amy and Clerks helmer wanted to take a jaunt through the horror genre with a film of his own. He wrote a script, entitled Red State , and when he handed it over to the Weinstein brothers, Harvey and Bob, they passed. Red State was without a home. Den of Geek, however, caught up to Smith in England and the director informed them that it looks like he's finally got the money to make the film happen. Actually, his exact words were: "I think we've got the money for Red State." The film could be building some momentum now, so we'll keep you posted on further developments. »

The blogs of my blog

5 October 2009 4:10 AM, PDT | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

One of my favorite pastimes, especially when I should be doing something else, is moseying around the blogs of my readers. You may have noticed that when the name of a poster is displayed in blue, that means it's a link -- usually to the author's blog, although you might be surprised. Assembled here is a distinctive readership of interesting people, not least because I am vigilant about never posting idiotic or perfunctory comments. A certain civil tone is (usually) maintained, avoiding the plague of flame wars.

More than a year ago, when the blog was somewhat new to me, I wrote: "Your comments have provided me with the best idea of my readers that I have ever had, and you are the readers I have dreamed of. I was writing to you before I was sure you were there. You are thoughtful, engaged, fair, and often the authors of eloquent prose. »

Extract

Directed by: Mike Judge

Cast: Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig

Running Time: 1 hr, 30 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: September 4, 2009

Plot: An odd story about a young business owner who gets word he may finally be able to sell his extract company. Trouble ensues when an uncanny accident sends one of Joel’s (Bateman) employees to the hospital for, uh, losing something important. The aftermath of the incident forces him to re-think his plans, and re-examine the life he thought had been so mind-numbingly drab to begin with.

Who’s It For? Fans of Jason Bateman’s career turn around. This guy may be a one-note sort of actor, but like his young counterpart on Arrested Development Michael Cera, this is one note Mike Judge hopes we don’t mind hearing/seeing yet again.

Expectations: Will Extract do for Ben Affleck’s fledgling acting career what Tropic Thunder »

Disney Buys Marvel, DJ Am Remembered And A 'Twilight' Actor Eats A Horse In Today's Twitter-Wood

31 August 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Disney surprised a lot of tweeters this morning when the company announced its acquisition of Spider-Man and X-Men publishers Marvel Entertainment. Kevin Smith, Jeff Katz, Dax Shepard, and many others chimed in with thoughts on the purchase.

Elsewhere, the tweets are still trickling in from those remembering DJ Am, including renowned Vegas party-goer Paris Hilton. The list of tweets today was actually fairly thick to sort through, with all of these reactions, a photograph of a "Twilight" star biting into a horse and Bob Saget's response to a fan's request for him to tell the "Aristocrats" joke on Twitter. It's all below in the Twitter-Wood Report for August 31, 2009.

Twitter Pic of the Day:

'Eclipse' Update From David Slade And Kevin Smith On 'Degrassi Goes Hollywood' In Today's Twitter-Wood

25 August 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

David Slade may be experiencing some frustrations on the set of "Eclipse" right now, but none of them are coming from his lead cast members, according to his tweets today. The director spoke highly of "Twilight" lovebirds Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, but had less complimentary things to say about airplane noise overhead.

Director Kevin Smith, meanwhile, offered up some self-deprecating commentary on his appearance in the new full-length "Degrassi" movie, "Degrassi Goes Hollywood," where he returned to hob-nob with his favorite Canadian teen-stars. And speaking of teen-stars, I've got a shot of Frankie Muniz's recent hand injury in the Twitter Pic of the Day. Have a look at that along with other pics from Rachelle Lefevre and Neil Gaiman. Those and more lurk below in the the Twitter-Wood report for August 25, 2009.

It's Spy Games And Carnival Rides In This Week's DVD Report For Tuesday, August 25

25 August 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's the last week of summer, so how is Hollywood celebrating? By releasing a home video slate of some of the most under-appreciated films of the year. From bickering spies to reluctant amusement park workers, August 25th brings together indie darlings and big-budget gems, and we're breaking it all down in today's DVD Report.

Let's kick it off with one of my favorite films of the year, Tony Gilroy's "Duplicity." The director's sophomore follow-up to "Michael Clayton," the Julia Roberts-Clive Owen spy yarn brings together two of the brightest and most expressive voices working today for a crafty globe-trotting adventure. Filled with twists and turns and superb acting, "Duplicity" wasn't exactly a smash hit at the cineplex, but it's more than worth your time. Sadly, if there's one thing worth griping about here, it's the rather lackluster bonus features...or should we say bonus feature. Both the »

Full Details: Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy on Blu-ray

21 August 2009 2:04 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

A few days ago I clued you all in on the first details surrounding the arrival of Kevin Smith's Clerks and Chasing Amy on Blu-ray Disc. Those specifics were a bit vague, I admit, so let's take Chasing Amy and get to the bottom of what you can expect. The November 17 release of Chasing Amy on Blu-ray will be offered in 1.85:1 1080p video and 5.1 DTS-hd Master Audio 48kHz/24.bit. Bonus features are a mix of what was included on the previously released Criterion Collection DVD and newly produced extras. What will not be ported from DVD is the Kevin Smith DVD introduction (naturally), screen specific audio commentaries with the cast and crew (replaced with new commentary and a q/a), and The Askewniverse Legend guide. At the end of the day this new Blu-ray edition's supplements are on par with the Criterion DVD, only more relevant in retrospect »

Criterion Collection Blu-ray

Kagemusha and Play Time It's hard for me not to simply tell you to rush out and buy both of these right now, but if you were to confront me with the question of "Buy? First Look: Chasing Amy and Clerks on Blu-ray

17 August 2009 8:01 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

About a month ago, Kevin Smith took to Twitter and informed his thousands of followers that Chasing Amy, Clerks, and a Kevin Smith Collection were coming to Blu-ray Disc in November. He backed up his claim with a look at the Collection cover art and made all of us quite happy. On Friday, retailers were alerted to the existence of these three upcoming releases which are now confirmed for a November 17 release. Clerks is coming to Blu-ray to celebrate its 15th anniversary and will include 90 minutes of all-new bonus features - which could potentially mostly be a new commentary track - along with an addition 4.5 hours of features most likely culled from the previous release. It will also include an embossed O-Sleeve. Chasing Amy includes over four hours of new Blu-ray exclusive bonus features that per Kevin Smith's Tweets includes a new commentary track that will be similar to a SModCast. »

Kevin Smith And Jason Mewes Gear Up To Appear In 'Degrassi Goes Hollywood'

13 August 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Filmmaker Kevin Smith has always had a weird, inexplicable fascination with the Canadian TV series "Degrassi," a high school-age dramedy which has seen a number of evolutions over the years. Smith frequently references the series in his work. He even directed and appeared in three episodes of "Degrassi: The Next Generation." If you need hard evidence of Smith's "Degrassi" love, look no further than this short exchange from "Chasing Amy":

Holden (Ben Affleck): So, uh, what do you wanna do tonight?

Banky (Jason Lee): I dunno. Get a pizza, watch "Degrassi Junior High".

Holden: You got a weird thing for Canadian melodrama.

Banky: I got a weird thing for girls who say, "Aboot."

My point is that none of you should be surprised to hear that Smith, along with longtime collaborator and friend Jason Mewes, will be appearing in the upcoming "Degrassi" TV-movie, "Degrassi Goes Hollywood." Those »

Imagine a situation where you're dating a girl you find to be otherwise perfect until you learn about her sexual history. It's not a new scenario - one that was mined for comedic relief quite well in both Clerks and Chasing Amy - and I'm sure one that has afflicted many of the guys reading this. But what if you had the chance to even the playing field? That's the concept behind the upcoming comedy One Night Stan. The film follows a guy named Stan who's allowed by his fiancee Julie to... »

If You Were Here: Ten Filmmakers Who May or May Not Be John Hughes' Rightful Heir

John Hughes wrote his own movies, created a dozen iconic film-music moments, and gave us a funny yet soulful depictions of teenagers complete with multifacted female protagonists. Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy) In the 90's Kevin Smith gave us a totally new take on the teenage wasteland and took on the complicated sexual politics of the day with nerdy verve. Joey Lauren Adams falls for Buck on "United States of Tara"

5 August 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy was one of the first "lesbian" movies I had ever seen. It was 1997, when Ben Affleck was Jennifer-less and Jason Lee had yet to be named Earl. And Joey Lauren Adams was an actress with a sexy, raspy voice who was not afraid to play gay on screen.

Even though she falls for Affleck in the film, she ends up back with a woman, so it's not a terrible portrait of lesbianism or, perhaps, bisexuality. And now Adams will have another chance at sexual ambiguity on Showtime's United States of Tara, playing a woman who falls for Buck, Tara's male alter-ego.

Wow, gender bending can be so confusing.

When Tara (Toni Collette) is Buck, she's a man's man who hunts, drinks, swears and misogynist. On the second season of the series, Buck will end up meeting bartender Pammy (Adams), who EW reports is "warm and »

Wusses, pussies and wankers are listed in the latest Details magazine. Details takes a hard look at the complete cinematic wastes of life and lay-downs that have dotted celluloid over the ages. According to the magazine, "lots of big-screen characters lack cojones (we're looking at you, Joseph Gordon-Levitt in (500) Days of Summer and Michael Cera in, well, everything), but which big-screen icons are most in need of a pair?" Here is a taste of the Details film "Pussy" list: 20. Paris (Orlando Bloom) in Troy 19. Rob Gordon (John Cusack) in High Fidelity 18. Harold (John Cho) in Harold & Kumar Go to White CastleHarold 17. 'United States of Tara' exclusive: Joey Lauren Adams falls for 'Buck'

Looks like love is in the air for Toni Collette's male alter on United States of Tara. Sources confirm to me exclusively that Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy) is joining the Showtime comedy's season 2 cast as Pammy, a funny and warm barmaid who has a history of picking the wrong guys. Her luck changes the day she meets "Buck" and falls head over heels in love. Adams is on board for at least three episodes. Tara's 12-episode second season debuts in early 2010. »

Is “Heteroflexible” the New Gay?

21 July 2009 12:12 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

What does it mean that there are three new entertainment projects where straight men are sexually involved with other men?

The three projects: TorchwoodHumpday and the Adam/Rafe storyline on The Young and the Restless.

Torchwood's Jack (John Barrowman) and Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd)

Britain’s Torchwood first broke gay ground with its leading bisexual character (in a genre show, no less). Now with the show’s third season (a five-part miniseries) running on BBC America for five days starting last night, that leading character, Captain Jack Harkness, is still involved with his male co-worker Ianto.

But this time around, we learn that Ianto is not gay or bisexual; he’s actually straight, but just happens to respond emotionally and sexually to Jack. Confusing? It shouldn’t be. Such emotions and relationships have always been part of the human spectrum. It’s just that, until very recently, we haven »

Kevin Smith Reveals Blu-ray 3 Movie Collection

17 July 2009 11:57 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Kevin Smith was on a roll today and I'm not talking about tumbling down a flight of stairs. The director found time during the production of, or while taking a short break from, A Couple of Dicks starring Bruce Willis, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Seann William Scott to play publicist on Twitter for a handful of upcoming Blu-ray Disc releases. He started by announcing Chasing Amy and the original Clerks would come to Blu-ray simultaneously in November. Chasing Amy was not a surprise thanks to a previous Smith Tweet, but Clerks caught everyone by surprise. While fielding questions for that Tweet, he revealed Clerks would be the "X" anniversary edition with the added bonus of the Oh What A Lovely Tea Party documentary from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Capping Smith's media blitz was the appearance of Miramax box art for a Kevin Smith 3 Movie Collection on Blu-ray Disc packed with Clerks, »

Discuss: In Love of Past Decades

17 July 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I have this problem. I have really sensitive triggers to the '90s. Dazed and Confused. Cameron Crowe. Sheryl Lee. Grunge music. Pirate DJs and Christian Slater. Kevin Smith. Plaid. Hackers.

Get started on one train of thought and in no time, many parts of that decade flash through my mind. When I see that perfectly coiffed teen movie, I think back to Empire Records, Dazed, Pump Up the Volume, and the other films that didn't look like fashion ads. Movies about relationships lead me back to the days of Singles and Chasing Amy. And the music. Oh, the music. Sure, there was bubble-gum mainstream fare, but there was also so much that was fresh and unexplored.

One of the main reasons that I adore the '90s is because many of the films were just a little different, a little less polished, and all the better for it. I »
