The Producers Of Dead Snow Go Gangster With Tomme Tonner!

23 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

What do you do if you're the producers of one of the biggest genre hits in your region's history?  If you're the producers of Norwegian zombie comedy Dead Snow you bring back the whole crew that made that earlier effort so successful, pick another genre, recruit a few new faces - preferably specialists in the new playground - and you do it again, that's what!

Dead Snow producers Kjetil Omberg and Terje Stromstad are poised to release their latest effort, Tomme Tonner, on the world in January.  And, yes, fans of Dead Snow, almost the entire cast have parts in the ensemble here - including an acting role for Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola - with regional favorites Kim Bodnia (Pusher) and Kristoffer Joner (Next Door) taking the leads.  And who's that standing behind Bodnia in the poster?  Yep, that's Slavko Labovic, who will always be known as that guy …

Bronson Movie Review

2 November 2009 4:58 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The London penal system has no idea what to do with Michael Peterson, famously on record as its most violent criminal. If the film Bronson can be believed, their solution was to beat him intensely and often. Strangely, that’s also director Nicolas Winding Refn’s answer to his subject. Bronson, so named because Peterson adopts the full name of action star Charlie, is a pseudo-biography about a real life man who entered prison as a low-level bank robber and is still there today, infamous for taking hostages and inciting riots that would make Ufc fighters cower. Refn’s film isn’t the whole truth; it might not even be half the truth, but it creates a violently swirling vortex around its central figure, played to rage-filled precision by Tom Hardy.

All my life I’ve wanted to be famous” says Bronson in the film’s opening which has Hardy …

Sitges '09: My Sitges Story - Part 4

9 October 2009 11:26 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Tuesday, October 6

Ok, so the events of two nights before are finally coming into focus (see previous entry here). I’m referring to the infamous Karoke party initiated by the Film Festival Mafia and spearheaded by Austin Fantastic Fest’s Tim League and NY Asian fest programmer Mark Walkow, neither of whom had any reservations about getting on stage and belting out a few tunes, even sober. For me, it takes a few of those fishbowl-size drinks before I muster the courage to give the B-52’s “Love Shack” a try. I was going to keep these drunken revelries to myself, but once an incriminating photo of me turned up in the daily Sitges festival newspaper a day later, and various celebrants had secretly videotaped the sordid affair, I had no choice but to come clean. Now I know how David Letterman felt last week.

I do learn a few things that night, …

Movie Review: Bronson (2009)

Tom Hardy in Bronson

Photo: Magnet Releasing He was born Michael Peterson, adopted the "fighting name" Charles Bronson, is known as Britain's most famous prisoner and with Bronson director Nicolas Winding Refn has turned him into an entertaining one man show. To that effect, I am sure many will take offense to what is sure to be perceived as the glorification of a notoriously violent criminal and I can't necessarily argue against that opinion. But I enjoyed it nevertheless.

Introducing the audience to various moments of his life, Tom Hardy plays the titular bald brute as we become witness to his time as a bank robber, violent prisoner, insane asylum patient, bare-knockle brawler, boyfriend, jewelry store thief, prisoner again, hostage taker and inmate artist. It's a winding road and even when it leads to a moment of artistic expression it always seems to end in anarchy.

Whether he's watching a …

Valhalla Rising - Images

30 September 2009 3:54 PM, PDT | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

A few images from Danish film-maker Nicolas Winding Refn's Valhalla Rising which premièred at The Venice film festival and plays at the London BFI festival in October '09. Mads Mikkelsen (Le Chiffre in Casino Royale) stars as Harald.

Refn is best known for the cult Pusher trilogy and more recently directing Bronson.

Mute slave Harald escapes his Scottish masters with the help of 10 year old Are, torturing and killing them before joining a band of dispossessed Vikings. They go to sea, determined to return to Scandinavia to fight the spread of Christianity, but for Harald the journey is also a personal one to discover his own origins. Caught in a terrible storm, the group drift for 40 days until, on the verge of death, they find themselves in a freshwater river. The land seems at once strange yet familiar.

When they come under attack by unseen assailants, the groups' quest …

Six Shooter Film Series Aims Great Films at Video-on-Demand

24 September 2009 1:48 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Ever since the days Pay-Per-View, I’ve always thought that art house films should be able to come through a streaming cable-service.  I love art house theatres but they’re so rare and have such a limited number of screens that it can be difficult to get true independent films (not small-budget films from an “indie” division of a major studio) in front of audiences.

But the day of indie films on-demand arrived and we are all the better for it.  Magnolia/Magnet Pictutres has taken great advantage of this recent distribution channel to bring audiences movies that haven’t hit DVD and may not even be in a theatre near you.  The first Six Shooter Film Series brought home audiences films like “Let the Right One In” and “Timecrimes” and this year they’re really bringing the thunder “Ong Bak 2″, Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Bronson”, John Woo’s …

20 Must See Films of Fantastic Fest 2009

21 September 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If you're not going to come to Fantastic Fest, you're only lucky because you'll still have your eyeballs by the end of the month. We here at Fsr on the other hand will definitely lose the damned things along with most of our spinal column and our sanity. While we can't prepare for going blind, we can practice losing our minds, so we're taking a look at the 20 film we're most excited to see this year at Fantastic Fest. Blood, boobs, gore, nonsensical plots from the Far East, more blood, A.D.D. children's toys, zombie attacks, strange and unexplained occurrences, and more blood. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. It was tough narrowing down the field, and we probably did a crap job of it, but it's the best we can do when faced with the intensity of a film festival such as this. Looking forward to seeing you on the other side: Daybreakers

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #8

13 September 2009 1:07 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

It looks like I had a slow week since six of these choices are grouped into two spots, but there's a reason for all that as I will detail below. As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies... Shocker (1989), Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) and The People Under the Stairs (1991) Quick Thoughts: I watched these three Wes Craven features as they will be released on September 15 in a three-movie Wes Craven Collection, which you can buy at Amazon right now for only $15.49. Are they greatest of films? Nope, and The Serpent and the Rainbow is probably my least favorite of the bunch as I never get too into movies involving any kind of voodoo or hoodoo stuff. However, both Shocker and The People Under the Stairs were so wildly stupid I managed to have a lot of fun with them. …

Nicolas Winding Refn to Direct Modern Western Only God Forgives and a Gore Verbinksi Heist Film

8 September 2009 2:45 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The momentum behind writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn---a talent of significant interest for many of our staff---is culminating into numerous "man's man"-sounding projects. The Dane auteur behind the Pusher Trilogy and this winter's rollicking Bronson remains attached to direct Keanu Reeves in Jeckyll, a big-budget take on Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, that would introduce him to the domestic mainstream. This week, reviews for Refn's violent Viking epic, Valhalla Rising, have started to pile in from the Venice Film Festival: Variety compared it to a redundant and nearly dialogue-free "grunge-and-gore" flick in the John Milius mold. On a bad day with a skull chalice, might that be welcome? Add to this two new projects: a "modern Western" with the foreboding title Only God Forgives and an untitled heist film for producer Gore Verbinski (PoTC trilogy). The order of production is presently unknown. More info follows... The logline for Only …

New Clips: 2012, Ninja Assassin and Romero’s Survival of the Dead

7 September 2009 6:35 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

A few new clips slipped by us right as last week ended at the holiday weekend began. Well, two of them slipped by, and I hedged on posting the clip from Survival of the Dead at first because it's fairly lousy, and that makes me sad. See all three (or whichever ones you choose) after the break. Up first is the clip from 2012, courtesy of MTV. If you thought for a moment that this movie might be less idiotic than all of Roland Emmerich's other movies, this clip should kill the doubt. But, there is something beautiful here. This is the clip that made me realize the awesome Zlatko Buric, who played the drug dealer Milo in all three Pusher films, is in 2012. (Here's the trailer for Pusher 3, which is the one that really features Buric.)  He's the guy in this clip that leans up and helps John …

Exclusive Images from 'Bronson'

31 August 2009 12:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

One of the more popular titles at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival was a prison flick with the rather unassuming title of Bronson. I'd heard nothing but good things about this fact-based character study, and once I saw the flick for myself, I could easily understand why (read our review of Bronson from the Sundance Film Festival). Even if it weren't one of the strangest and most colorful "prison movies" out there, Bronson would still be worth seeing for the lead performance by Tom Hardy. I believe "force of nature" is the phrase we generally use to describe this type of performance. And it's pretty damn amazing.

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (he of the widely-admired Pusher trilogy), the film is about a petty criminal who, thanks to his own rebellious ways, turns a basic prison sentence into thirty years of solitary confinement. The film will be available through Magnet on October 9th. …

For years, One-Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the chieftain Barde. Aided by a boy, Are, he kills his captor and together they escape, beginning a journey into the heart of darkness. On their flight from bounty hunters, One-Eye and Are board a Viking vessel, but the ship is soon engulfed by an endless fog that first disintegrates as they sight an unknown land. As the new land reveals its secrets and the Vikings meet a ghastly fate, One-Eye discovers his true self.

Just on time for the upcoming world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, a new - and much improved - trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising has appeared on the scene.  Tighter, better resolution, and just generally leaner and meaner this trailer is reason to get awfully excited about the latest from the director of Pusher and Bronson. …

Worth Watching: Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson Trailer

19 August 2009 5:37 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Magnolia Pictures has debuted the official Us trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson today on Hulu (apologies for those not in the Us - you can see another trailer here). It's about the "most violent prisoner in Britain." A young man who was sentenced to 7 years on prison for robbing a post office ends up spending 30 years in solitary confinement. During this time, his own personality is supplanted by his alter ego, Charles Bronson. This movie is crazy, that's the best way to describe it. Nicolas Winding Refn has a kind of Stanly Kubrick-like style and Tom Hardy's performance as Bronson is just incredible, but it's a really weird story. Watch the official Us trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson: Bronson is both written and directed by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, of the acclaimed Pusher trilogy, Fear X, and the upcoming Valhalla Rising. Denmark Goes Slapstick At The Christmas Party

Danish film is known for a lot of things.  It’s precision.  A willingness to challenge.  Lately, a healthy string of high end thrillers.  But what it’s not really known for is comedy.  Particularly not slapstick comedy.  But if Rasmus Heide has his way that will soon change with The Christmas Party (Julefrokosten).  One of the most hotly anticipated films of the year in Denmark this year, The Christmas PArty features some of Denmark’s biggest stars - among them the leads from Pusher, Just Another Love Story and Flame And Citron getting goofy.
