Review
(Denmark) All three films in Nicolas Winding Refn's grunge noir trilogy of crime films set in the backstabbing underworld of petty crime and the unforgiving crimelords who eat the drones alive. Kim Bodnia takes center stage in Pusher (1996) as an ambitious street dealer whose life takes an abrupt turn into impending doom when a big score goes south and leaves him fatally indebted to the local crimelord. Pusher II: With Blood on My Hands (2004) is a reworking of the same premise, this time with Mads Mikkelson (a minor character in the original) in the lead as a dim thug in over his head. Pusher III: I’m the Angel of Death (2005) shifts focus to the aging crimelord (Zlatko Buric) in the Eastern European immigrant underworld. If there's a theme to the series, it's this: “It’s hard out here for a drug dealer.” Also includes Phie Ambo's feature-length documentary Gambler, a portrait of the director shot during the preparation and production of the two sequels. All three films also available separately; see New Releases for more details.
