This tele-movie was made and released about four years after its source play of the same name by Neil Simon was first performed in 1992. The Broadway production of "Jake's Women" opened at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York on 24th March 1992 and ran for 245 performances until the 25th October 1992. Joyce Van Patten and Alan Alda reprized their stage roles in this filmed version, the latter had been Best Actor Tony Award nominated for his Broadway performance. The play's setting is described in the play's intro as being "In Jake's apartment in Soho and in his mind".

The first ever production of Neil Simon "Jake's Women" was performed in Los Angeles in 1990 at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California, the season running from March until April that year. As such, this tele-movie was made and released about six years after this. According to Neil Simon, after this season closed, he re-wrote around 70% of the play. Simon canceled the Broadway booking after the Californian run, it was the first time out of twenty-four productions that Simon ever closed out of town.
The movie was the second of two Neil Simon adaptations that Glenn Jordan has directed, the first having being Only When I Laugh (1981).
