Good players and attractive location, but not a great story

Warning: Spoilers
Its a cheap, made-for-TV movie and a pilot for a series which never got made. The film is a surrealist sci-fi Swiss Family Robinson.

I suspect the series never got taken up because the main characters are not sufficiently interesting for much more than a feature length film. They are:

Dr John Everman (Sam Behrens): a neuro-surgeon who would rather be working than spending time with his wife and children. He's our narrator as well. I think we are supposed to find him witty and sympathetic but actually he is selfish egotistical and annoying.

Dr Grace Everman (Susanna Thompson): a general practitioner and John's wife. She is same age as him, but good looking and as charming and instinctively good natured as he is charmless and selfish. Why she would put up with his behaviour is never explained.

Their diabetic son, who is unable to survive without insulin and whose condition is a running plot theme in the film. The problem is that there is no supply of insulin on this parallel dimension island where the family now is, and when the small amount in his kit expires, so will he. Sadly, I never felt the slightest tension or anxiety in connection with his stupidity-fueled misadventures, for example losing his insulin kit while swimming in a volcanic lake. There is nothing wrong with child actor, David Gallagher as Sam Everman; he just plays an unlikeable child correctly and quite well.

Sam's older sister, Annie: Lisa Jakub. Lisa Jakub was one of the better child actors of the 1990s and this was one of her last films before she turned 18 and quit acting, choosing in her own words to leave Hollywood, stop pretending to be other people, and just live a normal average life. Once she turned adult she preferred anonymity to fame. But she was a good actress and it is really her performance which breaths life into this otherwise very mediocre film.

Bizarrely, Annie's main role in the film is to befriend and swim with the dolphins, who turn out to be key allies of the Everman family. Aged 17, she is the first one to show wisdom and see good sides to their situation, even though she is also worried and scared for her baby brother, with whom she endlessly bickers and quarrels, but who is still very dear to her heart. When the dolphins invite her to swim, displaying to entice her into the water, the penny drops for her: they're on a tropical paradise island with spartan but clean and decent accommodation, plenty of food, some very good company among their neighbours, and whether it is heaven or hell is down to what they make of it. Annie is the first one who gets it, and who starts to both enjoy herself and to make herself beneficial to other people and look for new friends, including the dolphins. Survival, mental as well as physical, is about an attitude of mind, and Annie has the right attitude; she can find happiness in what she has instead of misery in what she has lost.

Annie adventures are by far the most entertaining part of the film. They include a rather shocking horror moment when the dolphins lead her to an obvious drug traffickers aeroplane crashed in the bottom of the lagoon and the smugglers are still aboard, and have evidently been there for long enough that the tropical fish have finished with them. She feels betrayed by her dolphin friends, but it turns out that there are medical supplies on the plane. The dolphins also rescue her in quite a tense scene when she is trapped in the plane.

As well as Lisa Jakub, the film has a 28 year Naomi Watts, before she hit the big time and with a rather unflattering hairstyle, but still very attractive and also, after Lisa Jakub, the standout actor in the cast. She is a documentary film maker who wanted to make a film about the Bermuda Triangle and got caught by it. She is very attracted to handsome young Mike, the grad school captain of the Everman's yacht; but she has a husband in Chicago and is determined to get back to him and not to betray their marriage. Her resilience and brave endurance in the face of this ghastly separation is nicely played by Ms Watts. The tiny village's "mayor" and father-figure, a downed USN pilot from WW2 now in his 70s but who still wears and maintains his service uniform and remains calmly optimistic and shows the leadership the little group needs without ever asserting unwarranted power or authority, is the other support act which deserves honorable mention; he is nicely played by Jerry Hardin.

The other strength of the film is the cinematography, which is rather good for a humble TV movie. The swimming and aquatic sequences around the island lagoon are really well done, great use of light and colour. They help to explain the character development of Lisa Jakub's character, and why despite the situation she finds things to love about her new home and reasons to be cheerful.

The weaknesses are a weak and badly written story and too many unlikeable characters. The strengths are the imaginative use of the location and a few engaging acting performances by the players who got the best roles, Lisa Jakub especially.

Generic Shipwreck Fantasy
Theo Robertson30 March 2014
The Bermuda Triangle is one of the most enigmatic mysteries of the modern age that has puzzled and confounded scientists for decades where countless numbers of planes and ships have disappeared . Except it isn't and looking up the statistical evidence of this vast stretch of water the numbers of planes and ships that have disappeared in this area is no different from any other vast stretch of open water you care to name . Much of the legend of the triangle is down to Charles Berlitz who wrote a book on the subject and who felt the need to invent " facts " which weren't facts at all hence fiction quickly becomes established fact . Mass media has a hand in propagating myth and a good example would be the missing Malayan passenger flight which is still making leading headlines over two weeks after it went missing as if some supernatural force has taken it . Whatever the cause of the missing plane supernatural phenomena will not have been the cause but the media do enjoy a good mystery . In fact the human race as a whole enjoy mystery so something like the Bermuda Triangle remains part of popular culture which is reflected by the relatively large number of films using the subject as a backdrop and here's another which is sadly one of the most lacklustre ones you will see

There's a cynical air to calling a film BERMUDA TRIANGLE when the reality is that it's merely a generic shipwreck type story . A family are sailing through the triangle and a solar eclipse causes their boat to sink while transporting them on to a remote island where other survivors live and at this point all internal logic and common sense sinks with the family boat . A US serviceman drives around the island in a second world war era jeep . This mode of transport is petrol driven so obviously this remote island has a oil refinery there somewhere . Either that or the writer hasn't given the slightest piece of thought to what is being written and the film continues in the same thoughtless way . Another irritant is the happy clappy type characters that seem trapped on the island and their insufferable cheerfulness might just be some peoples idea of never ending hell . In fact the whole feel of the film is one of suffocating wish fulfilment and there's little in the way of danger , adventure or excitement so you've got a very boring film . Some people might want to watch it due to an unknown Naomi Watts in a small role but apart from that there's little to recommend this movie

Unbearable sweet boredom
the_wolf_imdb21 June 2011
The movie is cheap story about Bermuda Triangle with basically no plot at all. Fortunately it does not pretend to contain any wisdom, basically it is movie about nothing for the "whole family". It feels like paid vacation for the film crew on some pleasant island. Everything is nice, petty, there is almost no danger - "just a family movie".

This may work for some undemanding viewers who just want to spend free afternoon, but it was presented as a "thriller" to me. There are no thrills and the movie is very slow and very boring. I had to fast forward the movie, because the very slow pace and all the pretty Caribbean leisure time was simply unbearable. Seriously, it is as much fun to watch as home vacation video.

What is worst of all, the movie ends abruptly with absolutely nonsense twist. It is not surprising or unexpected - it simply seems that the filmmakers just run out of the money so they ended the movie somewhat. I have been very disappointed.

Waste of time...
Leofwine_draca4 October 2015
Another dodgy Bermuda Triangle-focused TV movie of the 1990s. I saw LOST IN THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE recently, and that was pretty bad, but this is even worse; a non-existent sci-fi premise turns out to be the set-up for a twee storyline involving an annoyingly bratty kid and his native counterpart, with lots of lame melodrama and TV soap-style stuff along the way.

Your usual irritating all-American family find themselves stranded on a deserted island with a bunch of other no-hopers and must learn to adapt their lifestyle accordingly. A pre-fame Naomi Watts is a young buxom blonde love interest while Jerry Hardin (Deep Throat from THE X-FILES) shows up as a grizzled old-timer who was shot down over the island during the Second World War!

Nothing much happens, leaving this a film with an extremely slow pace and very little incident. The script is very poor indeed, with few to no likable characters and way too much padding with kids swimming around with dolphins and the like. It's all rather hopeless, I'm afraid.

stupid even for a kid's movie
grnhair20013 August 2022
Stupidity on stupidity, fantasy that makes zero sense, just toss every cliche into a bucket and stir. Isn't there any desire in Hollywood to be correct about anything? "There are no volcanoes in this part of the Caribbean," says the dialog, though the characters are midway between Montserrat and St. Kitts. Lmao. There was an internet by 1996, so that could have been looked up but you'd think they'd notice that half an island blew to smithereens while they wrote this travesty. Lazy lazy writing. Read a book from time to time, writers.

"No nudity!" says another review, and that's about the best thing going for this smarmy, cloying, nonsensical, inaccurate, pap. Oh, and my kid comes within six inches of killing me with a blow gun "by accident?" I'm tossing that brat off the boat before he grows up and learns about guns. Smh.

wholesome family fun
philip-arnold-837-62289312 December 2013
Great family fun.

After their boat sinks in a storm a family of four find themselves stranded on a desert isle, with a community of quirky characters including a lovely part for Jerry Hardin as the town mayor. The families biggest problem is the young son who has diabetes and needs insulin, unfortunately its on the boat at the bottom of the sea. He also has a tendency to wander off and makes friends with a native boy and together they have some fun adventures. The daughter isn't left out either and makes friends with and has some truly spectacular scenes playing with dolphins.

Something to be enjoyed by children young and old.

This movie is a gem.
Soledad-219 October 2000
I honestly cannot understand the poor rating this movie has obtained by the users of www.imdb.com. This is one of my favorite movies, simply beautiful and full of hope. I give the maximum of points and invite all of you to watch it whenever you have the opportunity. There are many Bermuda Triangle movies but, undoubtedly, this is the best!

Pretty alright for me.
dy15827 June 2006
Many may have only started to notice about Naomi Watts (like me) after her success in movies like 'The Ring', but this is one of her earlier ones.

The Everman family from New York were having a holiday in the Caribbean before they were being whisked off to somewhere else. To kind of admit, I did not really able to follow the plot at times but then looking at how like dolphins can really communicate with the human beings on the island the family got whisked off to after they were at the Bermuda Triangle, it's kind of a little surreal at times.

But you like a nice family-themed kind of movie with some adventure in between, then maybe this one is for you.

My final say is like what I had stated in the summary of this review.

The wilderness family, revisited
Scott6995 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've never heard of this movie, and then I saw it pop up on my recommendations. It is basically a remake of The wilderness family of the 1970s. I think there was three or four of them. Basically it's a story of the family that leaves civilization to go live in the wilderness this time not by choice, and they end up having all kinds of adventures. But it's a Disney type flick so nobody ever gets hurt. That's what they did here, they just change the wilderness to the Bermuda triangle. There's the annoying kid that you will wish would die, and he doesn't, there's a teenage daughter she's kind of cute, she learns to swim with the dolphins and they solve all her problems. And then there's mom and dad, a couple of professionals that can always save the day. The differences here is they added a few new characters. It's a fun, watchable show. A cross between Gilligans island, Swiss family Robinson, and as I said, The wilderness family. If you get a chance, watch it, it's enjoyable.

An excellent movie
smedina195030 November 2004
This is one of the most extraordinary movies I have ever seen.

The poor rating only shows that not too many people have had the opportunity to enjoy the Bermuda Triangle. The acting is excellent, as well as the direction, the photography, etc. Many other movies have been based on this topic but, in my honest opinion, this is the best. I'm wondering why this movie is so difficult, almost impossible, to obtain. I have tried amazon.com and critics choice video and neither one of them has it at this moment. It happens that many mediocre movies are available in both VHS and DVD and ironically movies like this are completely ignored. I strongly recommend the Bermuda Triangle if you ever have the opportunity to see it.

Pleasantville in the Bermuda Triangle
star-303 July 2000
This film comes from the writers of "Cocoon 2" and tells the story of a family that gets lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Finally we're told what the secret of it.

"Bermuda Triangle" is a cheap tv-show with an almost perfect sreenplay and an average cast. The film keeps us excited to the very last and maybe inspired writer/director Gary Ross to create the world of "Pleasantville".

8 stars of 10.

i have always been a believer in natures healing power....yes its only a movie but to me I believe....when the boy had a diabetic attack the Indians on the island used natures leaves to heal him.... mom thinking it was temporary she realized nature wiped out his diabetes for good....just saying that governments spend billions of dollars on medicinal research when the cure for all illnesses lays there in the amazon....and many people will agree with me is that they don't want the cure for some diseases that rake in billions for corporations they ant to keep the cure locked away...so to say...."we billion dollar pharmaceutical companies and medical research companies will make no more money if we release cures for cancer,diabetes,m.s.,"....I don't hear much about it but a doctor in Colombia cured a lady with parkinsons disease it was so bad she couldn't even hold a cup of water she would shake so violently she went to doctor and whatever he did cured her....and Michael j. fox suffers from it...there's an example
