This is the final installment of a three-part series. Read parts one and two here. When Kate and Gerry McCann went home on Sept. 9, 2007, they told the reporters crowded around to witness their departure from Portugal that their decision to leave in no way meant that they had given up searching for their daughter Madeleine, who had been missing for four months. They were reluctant to go, Kate recalled in her 2011 book Madeleine, but going back to their lives in England was "what was right and fair" for their twins, Sean and Amelie, who at 2 years old were still unaware that something so devastating had happened. Their big sister's fourth birthday had solemnly passed on May 12, nine...

While No Time to Die producer Barbara Broccoli admitted today that the stewards of the 007 franchise don’t yet know how James Bond will return after Daniel Craig’s swansong as the super secret agent, she did allow, “We’ll figure that one out, but he will be back. You can rest assured James Bond will be back.”
Broccoli was speaking Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: New York event joined virtually by fellow producer Michael G Wilson as well as co-star Rami Malek, special effects supervisor Chris Corbould and production designer Mark Tildesley.
MGM/Eon/Universal’s Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed No Time to Die went through four release-date changes amid the pandemic and had its world premiere September 28 at London’s Royal Albert Hall before opening to $113 million overseas. Its North American rollout began in early October.

Helmed by Antoine Barraud, “Madeleine Collins” stars Efira as Judith, a successful translator who leads a double life between Switzerland and France with two different men with whom she has children. “Madeleine Collins,” the buzzy psychological drama directed by France’s Antoine Barraud (“Portrait of the Artist”) and toplined by popular Belgian actress Virginie Efira who plays the lesbian nun in Paul Verhoeven’s “Benedetta,” is among ten competition titles set to launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section.
The Venice section modeled around the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight is largely made up of international first works this year. All entries are world premieres.
Besides “Madeleine” in which Efira (pictured) plays a woman who leads a double life –– and which also features Nadav Lapid, who is also the Israeli director of “Synonyms” and also Jacqueline Bisset –– the three other pics competing in Venice Days that are not first works are: the drama “Private Desert,” by Brazilian director Aly Muritiba (“Rust”) that is centered around a 40-year-old-cop’s Internet love interest who goes missing; “Dusk Stone,” by Argentina...

Christopher Plummer has never considered himself a “series guy” before, but things are changing.
The 90-year-old actor stars in Peacock’s new mystery-drama series “Departure,” which makes its U.S. premiere on Thursday after previously premiering in the U.K. earlier this year. The project is Plummer’s first series regular TV role in over 25 years.
Plummer plays Howard, a spirited mentor to a sharp investigator named Kendra, who is played by “I Know This Much Is True” star Archie Panjabi. Howard convinces her to return to the job in order to find out what happened to passenger plane Flight 716 after it vanishes somewhere over the Atlantic.
“He’s crazy about Kendra. The old guy might even be sort of in love with her,” Plummer said of his “Departure” character. “He’s brought her along and promoted her each time, and here’s a job that she doesn’t want...

“I don’t think anybody dislikes puppets,” said musical legend Julie Andrews.
And the star, co-creator and executive producer of Julie’s Greenroom, which premieres Friday, March 17 on Netflix, knows of what she speaks. At a recent press event hosted by the streaming video site, Andrews told journalists she was very involved in the creation of the puppet cast members on her new children’s show, right down to choosing their garments and skin colors.

“A Dickens Delight”
By Raymond Benson
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby may not immediately come to mind when naming the most well-known of author Charles Dickens’ novels, but it’s arguably one of his best. Besides being a cracking good story in print, the Royal Shakespeare Company famously produced an 8-1/2-hour long Tony Award-winning play (staged in two parts, with a dinner break) in 1980 that was one of this reviewer’s most treasured theatrical experiences.
The motion picture, released in 2002 to positive critical acclaim but little enthusiasm from ticket-buyers, is also a delight. Writer/director Douglas McGrath whittled down Dickens’ massive tome to a mere 132 minutes, and yet one doesn’t miss the extracted bits. The screenplay is an essential lesson in adaptation. Now a gorgeously rendered Blu-ray release from Twilight Time, Nickleby can be re-evaluated and appreciated for the superb achievement it is.

“I hate that so much,” Jennette McCurdy says after taking a sip of my drink, a Hendrick’s martini with a twist. “It makes me hyperventilate.” Her face crumples like a piece of paper, and she chases the sip with her Moscow Mule, a drink she describes as so good it tastes “like Sprite.” A curtain of bangs frames her big cheeks and expressive eyes, making it easy to see how she thrived on Nickelodeon for so many years. She tells me she’s bewildered by my preference for alcohol that tastes like alcohol; gin, in particular, is offensive to her. “It tastes like the year you find out Santa’s not real,” she laughs. We’re in a deep leather booth in Bemelmans Bar, underneath the soft glow of Madeline artist Ludwig Bemelmans's murals of Central Park, listening to jazz by the Chris Gillespie trio. Bemelmans is impossibly...

Innovative animator whose credits include Lady and the Tramp, Petroushka and Grease
The pioneering animator John David Wilson, who has died aged 93, launched his studio, Fine Arts Films, in 1955 and found success with his first short subject, an adaptation of a Japanese folk tale, Tara the Stonecutter, which was screened in America with Teinosuke Kinugasa's Oscar-winning samurai drama Jigokumon (Gate of Hell, 1953). Next came Petroushka (1956), for which Igor Stravinsky (despite negative feelings towards animation following Disney's Fantasia) was persuaded by Wilson to prepare a shortened score for the film and conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the soundtrack. Petroushka won several festival awards and was the first animated film to be accepted by the Venice film festival.

If you're looking for an example of how we, the citizens of the United States, wage war on some of our greatest writers, you need look no further than Ludwig Bemelmans and his out-of-print masterpiece My War with the United States. Yes, he's the same guy who created the Madeline series of children's books (and they are nice ones). But there's more to him, much more. In the 1930s, '40s, and '50s, Bemelmans was that rare specimen, a total original, a writer of memoirs and stories so personal and so poignant, and so damn funny, they rival anything written by Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Chandler, and Thurber, all wrapped into one. And what's more, these things sold. They were big time.
And no wonder. They shine. They are as hard as diamonds, but bend like summer wheat. They bring tears of joy and of rage. If anything, the closest approximation...

Los Angeles -- Jodie Foster had everyone talking when she took the unusual step of revealing she's a lesbian on the Golden Globes stage Sunday night. This hadn't exactly been a secret, given that she has two sons with her former partner. But the two-time Oscar winner has been notoriously protective of her privacy, which made the rambling and emotional speech such a riveting aberration.
But this is also a good opportunity to talk about what made Foster famous in the first place: the strong screen persona and versatile talent she's displayed over her 47 years as an actress. Here's a look at five of her best performances:
_ "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991): The word "iconic" gets tossed around a lot without much thought, but it's truly applicable here in describing the work of Foster and co-star Anthony Hopkins. Foster won the second of her two best-actress Oscars (the first...

Chicago – It doesn’t take a child psychologist to figure out why British author Julia Donaldson’s 1999 book “The Gruffalo” has become a hit with families around the globe. It gives parents ample opportunities to portray various animal voices, while kids can take part in reciting the multiple catchy refrains. Best of all, Donaldson centers her tale on a tiny hero who uses his brains to outwit hulking predators.
Clocking in at a slim 25 minutes, Max Lang and Jakob Schuh’s Oscar-nominated animated adaptation has been hailed in some quarters as a family classic. I don’t think the film is nearly substantial enough to deserve such acclaim, though that’s not because of its limited running time. Several short films left an enduring mark on my childhood. I’ll always cherish the artistic exuberance of Stephan Martinière’s “Madeline,” the Broadway-worthy songs of Michael Sporn’s “Lyle Lyle the Crocodile,...

Los Angeles-based animation house DIC Entertainment on Monday unveiled a slew of big international deals for its kids programming, including deals for such signature programs as Super Duper Sumos, Madeline, Mary-Kate and Ashley: In Action and Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century. Broadcasters signing on for new deals with DIC include Nickelodeon Asia, Fox Kids Italy, Cartoon Network Japan and ITV in the United Kingdom. The deals, which also include the franchise Strawberry Shortcake, were announced by executive vp international sales Pat Ryan and Leslie Nelson, co-managing director of worldwide sales, U.K. Many of the deals were generated at last month's big international TV market MIPTV in Cannes, Ryan said. DIC chief executive Andy Heyward said the sales bounty has marked one of the most successful years to date for DIC on the international TV market.
