We might be in year two of a pandemic but you'd be hard pushed to notice it in terms of its presence on film, with most directors preferring to pretend that it doesn't exist. It comes as something of a welcome change then to see director Alika Tengan fold the realities of the situation we're all living through into his film - just one of the things that makes this snapshot of life on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu relatable.
Tengan made waves with his short Moloka'i Bound, the feature version of which made the Black List's newly inaugurated Indigneous List and though this film does have the vibe of something that was made with friends in the meantime, his authenticity and ear for dialogue continue to bode well for the future. The low-key narrative - which is a docufiction hybrid very much in the mumblecore tradition - is just inviting you to.

MGM and The Black List have selected Jennifer Grand as the second recipient to receive a two-step guild minimum blind script deal.
As part of the partnership, Franklin Leonard and Scott Silver are on board to produce Grand’s script for the studio. The third opt-in period of the partnership, whose mission is to discover new voices from historically underrepresented communities around the world, kicks off January 27-April, 29 2022, and is open to all genres.
“Breaking in isn’t easy for anyone and those of us coming to screenwriting after a career in another industry find that many of the paths and positions are designed for younger people just starting their careers,” said Grand. “I turned to The Black List to increase my exposure and my network and now I have my first writing deal! There are very few actors with Rebecca Hall’s facility for making difficult, even contradictory characters seem plausible. So it’s quite something to say that even her knack for the dignified and intelligent portrayal of mental and behavioral instability meets its Waterloo with Andrew Semans’ “Resurrection,” a psychological thriller that starts off promisingly before swerving into serious (and sadly self-serious) derangement. It winds up several stops north of bonkers, in a finale that shoots for transgressive, psycho-biological role-reversal, but plays like 1994’s Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy “Junior” given a torture-porn makeover.
Initially, Margaret (Hall) is an aspirational figure. With a glass-walled office at her lucrative pharma job, a well-appointed apartment and intimate yet no-strings sex-on-demand with married co-worker Peter (Michael Esper), she is also a doting mom to 17-year-old Abbie (Grace Kaufman), who is about to head off to college. (On one level “Resurrection” can be read as the mother of all empty-nest breakdowns.

Writers will understand this – your best ideas can come to you anywhere and at anytime so you’d better take a notebook or something to record them on everywhere you go. Sometimes, though, even the best of us have to improvise, like J.K. Rowling did when originally coming up with the Harry Potter books.
The Wizarding World author took to Twitter recently to reveal that her ideas for the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry hit her when she was travelling on a plane. With nothing else to hand, Rowling had to settle for writing these ideas, which would later become so iconic, on a sick bag.
“The best thing I ever wrote on was an aeroplane sick bag,” she revealed. “Came up with the Hogwarts houses on it.”

Already this week, the 2017 edition of the Black List was released, and two of last year’s selections — “I, Tonya” and “The Post” — became Golden Globe nominees. Completing a trifecta of recent Black List developments, iTunes has curated a page for cinephiles to watch more than 100 films that graduated from the annual list of unproduced gems. Since former development executive Franklin Leonard created the Black List in 2004, more than 325 of its entries have resulted in movies.

Rounding up the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, as voted on by hundreds of film executives, The Black List has been a strong resource to clue one in on projects to potentially anticipate, but first, to kickstart Hollywood on bringing them to screen. Last year’s chart-topper, the Madonna film Blonde Ambition by Elyse Hollander, was picked up by Universal Pictures and also in the top five was Liz Hannah’s The Post, which Steven Spielberg turned out quite fast. Today we have this year’s edition.
Topping the 2017 edition we have the post-wwii drama Ruin by Matthew Firpo and Ryan Firpo, which Gal Gadot is set to star in with direction by Macbeth and Snowtown‘s Justin Kurzel. Also among the list is the abortion drama Let Her Speak, the story of Anne Frank’s diary, Keeper of the Diary (which will be directed by Kenneth Branagh at Focus Features...

Well, credit to the folks behind The Black List for making writing a lede for this pretty damn easy. So here goes: this morning, the Golden Globes nominations were announced, and now come the scripts that are hoping to collect accolades once Hollywood decides to make them.
For now, they’ll kick around as the best unmade screenplays in Hollywood as part of annual The Black List. The criteria is that these screenplays will not be in production this year, but some of them are already well on their way.

This year’s Black List — Hollywood’s “most liked” unproduced screenplays — was unveiled throughout the early part of the day, care of a massive Twitter-centric push led by some of the industry’s biggest talents. “Congratulations to all of the screenwriters who made this year’s list and all of the executives who contributed to it,” said Black List founder Franklin Leonard in an official statement. “In aggregate, they’ve assembled another remarkable survey of extraordinary storytelling that I hope we all get to benefit from on screen in the coming years.”

“The Post” is a period piece, but its production happened at warp speed. Steven Spielberg began shooting in White Plains, New York, on May 1, 2017; 12 months earlier, he had no intention of directing a film and its rookie screenwriter, Liz Hannah, hadn’t written a word of it. This week, “The Post” was named Best Film by the National Board of Review, which also gave Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks top acting honors. Now, Hannah and co-writer Josh Singer have a formidable chance of securing an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Hannah didn’t always aspire to be a screenwriter. Following undergraduate studies at the Pratt Institute and an internship on the film “Reign Over Me,” she was admitted to the AFI Conservatory, in the producing discipline. Then she spent five years in development — long enough to realize it wasn’t what she wanted.

Diversity was a hotly debated topic within the “Dialogues: At the Table” panel. The outspoken, decisive Franklin Leonard, who runs online network The Black List that connects writers and their scripts with agents, producers and financiers, shrugged his shoulders: “The numbers don’t lie. Look at the success of films such as Titanic and Avatar. [They] made it clear many years ago that women could sell films. And this year we have the success […]...

I have to imagine production of The Hitman’s Bodyguard started with director Patrick Hughes gathering the whole cast together and giving them some kind of speech along the lines of “Look, we all know this script is a piece of garbage but if we pull together we can elevate it way past tolerable” and then there was some big cheer and they ran out to the set like a sports movie. It’s a laughable script that doesn’t hold together under the smallest bit of scrutiny, but the cast absolutely crushes it. It’s the best bad movie I’ve seen all year and I don’t mean that as faint praise. The world is full of people doing average work with average material but seeing fantastic work come from a wretched foundation is something special. This is a diamond found in a coal mine.

Talk isn’t cheap. And, in Hollywood, it still seems to come predominately out of male mouths.
The Wrap reports that, over at the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering’s Signal Analysis and Interpretation Lab (Sail), a new study has broken down the metrics of nearly 1,000 film scripts to better understand how language can impact the way various groups, particularly gender, are portrayed on screen.
Using a tool developed by the lab and “in conjunction with existing cognitive and developmental language tools, researchers Anil Ramakrishna, Victor R. Martinez, Nikolaos Malandrakis, and Karan Singla, doctoral students in Computer Science at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, together with Professor Shrikanth Narayanan, the Niki and C. L. Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson has long been eager to get behind the camera — she’s already helmed a pair of short films, including the Sundance award-winning “The Arm,” which she made alongside Jessie Ennis and Sarah Ramos — and her feature directorial debut, “Unicorn Store,” is reportedly set to bow sometime later this year. And now the film has snagged the backing of a brand new production shingle, one that sounds very much in line with Larson’s own outspoken and equality-driven attitude.
Long-time producer Lynette Howell Taylor has now launched a new production banner called 51 Entertainment, with a focus on filmmaker-driven content, and “Unicorn Store” is set up as its first feature. Larson directed the film from Samantha McIntyre’s script, and she also stars in the feature alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Bradley Whitford, Joan Cusack, and Martha MacIsaac. The film also boasts a crew that was mostly made up of female professionals.

Marc Webb goes from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to Gifted, starring Chris Evans. Here's our review...
When the moment comes for Chris Evans to put down Captain America's shield, we'll be sorry to see the back of one of the best big screen superhero portrayals ever. But Marvel's loss will be cinema's gain, going by the interesting projects he's chosen between his more red, white and blue escapades. In Gifted, he's put whatever blockbuster clout he may have behind a project that deserves it, and the result is one of the year's nicest surprises.
Evans plays Frank Adler, a boat mechanic who lives in Florida with his seven-year-old niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) and a one-eyed rescue cat called Fred. Mary is a child prodigy who immediately captures the attention of her first-grade teacher Bonnie (Jenny Slate) with her advanced grasp of maths.

As directed by Doug Liman, The Wall works as a taut piece of modern American mythos, sprinkled with hefty helpings of genre and jingoism. Set in 2007 at the “end” of the Iraq War, a duo of American soldiers (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena) get pinned down by an infamous Iraqi sniper whose legend is outweighed only by his accuracy and purported kill count.
While Cena’s Staff Sergeant Matthews lies wounded and exposed, Taylor-Johnson’s Sergeant Isaac takes cover behind a tenuous wall that’s one good push away from toppling over. The Black List script, from Dwain Worrell, utilizes the pseudo-chamber setting nicely while Taylor-Johnson does his best to anchor the intensity of the situation. The young actor still leaves something to be desired, but it is no stretch in saying he’s made some significant strides with solid, interesting turns both here and in last year’s Nocturnal Animals.

The Black List, which has been releasing an annual survey of Hollywood’s best unproduced film screenplays, is moving into TV for the first time ever. The organization — founded by Franklin Leonard — has sent out a survey to hundreds of TV executives, asking them to submit their top 10 favorite unproduced pilots, TheWrap has learned. The results will only be released, however, if the Black List receives enough votes for the survey and if there is enough interest. There aren’t confirmed plans to produce an annual TV list, according to Leonard, who spoke with TheWrap by phone, but the organization will.

“Here’s to the fools that dream,” goes the tagline for “La La Land,” and it’s a perfect summary of Los Angeles and Hollywood, where the cliché that every busboy is a screenwriter and every bartender is an actress seems to be pretty close to reality. But it’s the opportunity of overnight success that keeps people coming from all over the country to try to make it big, and Hollywood is still the place where that can happen.
