Wolfman gets rating

8 December 2009 2:26 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

The update of the classic monster movie The Wolf Man hasn't had an easy transformation from start to hairy howling finish. First, director Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) abruptly left  shortly before filming, and was replaced by FX guy Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III). The Universal remake shot in early-mid 2008, with rumors of behind-the-scenes difficulties and reported reshoots. The release date lurched all the way through 2009 until it's current slot on Feb. 12, 2010. …

Their Best Role: Robin Williams in 'The Fisher King'

7 December 2009 7:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Welcome to a new series here on Cinematical where we select an actor or actress and the role we think is their all time best.

There is a widely believed theory that says anytime Robin Williams grows a beard for a film, that film will be good. Or, at least his performance will be. The idea is mostly accepted on the evidence of Williams' terrific dramatic appearances in Moscow on the Hudson, Awakenings, The Fisher King and Good Will Hunting, for which he won an Oscar. But many people like to argue against the theory because the actor shows up bearded in Jumanji, which isn't quite on the level of Williams' best work. Also, the theory holds little weight when we look at all his excellent clean-shaven turns, such as those in One Hour Photo, Good Morning Vietnam, Insomnia, Dead Poets Society, The World According to Garp and, yes, Popeye. …

10-Minutes Behind the Scenes of 'Avatar' and a James Horner Interview

29 November 2009 1:53 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

First off, Film Music Mag has posted an audio interview with James Horner, score composer for James Cameron's upcoming sci-fi epic Avatar. In the site's lede in for the interview they write: James Horner has visited many musical worlds during over three decades that have made him into one of Hollywood's top composers. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons for his success is how Horner's boldly emotional sound can place a viewer so effectively in the skin of the characters he scores, from the mystical Indian heritage a cop explores in Thunderheart to the ethereal, exotic jungle a boy grows up in Where the River Runs Black. Or it can be the choral battlefield valor of soldiers charging into Glory, as well as the ferocious jungle danger unlocked when two children play a game of Jumanji. You can listen to the complete interview or download it to your computer right here. …

Top Editors Brought In to Re-Cut The Wolfman

18 November 2009 9:47 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Of all the big films on the docket for next year, the one I’m most concerned about is The Wolfman. The second trailer for the film looked pretty badass, I’ll admit – but this movie has suffered a plagued production from the get-go. A change in directors, callbacks for reshoots and re-designs in the creature effects… It all points to a studio trying to turn lead into gold through the usual movie alchemy.

Well, the guys over at Slash Film must have magnifying glass eyes, because they spotted something deep-six buried in an article over at Variety, which names editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch as the two guys hired to do a recut of The Wolfman!

This revelation comes without the usual fanfare from the blogosphere that goes with every little development on a major movie – suggesting that the studio is trying to keep the continuing problems with …

Watch the The Wolfman Trailer

21 August 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

At this point, expectations for The Wolf Man run so low that the movie will have to be quite something to overcome them. Its beleaguered studio, Universal, has shifted the release date four (!) times. It’s directed by Joe Johnston, known for Jumanji and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Stars Benico Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins have basically gone the “It’s just entertainment” route in interviews. …

It’s “Wolf Man Day!” Check out the new pics and trailer from ‘The Wolf Man’

20 August 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

We can officially call this “Wolf Man Day” with the amount of images that were released. On top of that, the trailer for The Wolf Man just popped up online and all I can say is “whoa.”

The Wolf Man’s release date was recently moved to February 12, 2010 which gave credence to all this talk of behind-the-scenes trouble and re-shoots. The film stars Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt.

The film is written by David Self (Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days ) and Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en, Sleepy Hollow) and directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jumanji, Hidalgo).

“Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his …

Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman Trailer Starring Benicio Del Toro

20 August 2009 9:14 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Universal's re-imagining of the classic monster flick The Wolfman has been in development for few years now, with Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) originally attached to direct. After Romanek parted ways due to creative differences, Brett Ratner was rumoured to be taking over the project, but in the end Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III) was named as his replacement. After many delays and a few additional reshoots, a solid release date has finally been set, the first trailer has arrived online! The movie is set in the the late 1880s and stars Benicio Del Toro as Lawrence Talbot, a man who returns to the English village of Blackmore to investigate the disappearance of his brother. When he is attacked by a werewolf, he becomes cursed and finds himself transforming into a beast as well. I like the look of the film and also the period setting, but I am …

Captain America 'will be Raiders of Lost Ark meets Saving Private Ryan'

12 August 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The upcoming big-screen adaptation of Captain America will be set in the Second World War and have an Indiana Jones retro feel, it's been confirmed.

The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier told the Los Angeles Times: "I have seen some of the design work they're doing for Captain America and it looks amazing. It's a period piece and it's like Raiders of the Lost Ark and with more gadgets."

Joe Johnston is directing The First Avenger: Captain America, due out on July 22, 2011, and had previously worked on art direction for Raiders as well as directing The Rocketeer in 1991.

Leterrier added: "It's Raiders meets Rocketeer and Saving Private Ryan. It's going to be so cool."

Johnston's other credits include Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), Jumanji (1995), Jurassic Park 3 (2001) and Hidalgo (2004). He is finishing work on The Wolfman remake before starting on Captain America in October.

Casting for the lead character is expected soon after that. …

Raiders + Rocketeer + Private Ryan = Captain America

10 August 2009 11:15 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

So we've been jonesing for news about this flick ever since we were the first to find Captain America lurking in the frozen wasteland of a shot in The Incredible Hulk. I know we all hate math around here. The only reason we made it through algebra was the college-aged, blonde teaching assistant that would always lean over our desk to help us with quadratics. If you're completely anti-math, consider the headline as "Joe Johnston's Past Leaks Into His Future," since it appears as if the director's concept art for the upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America is being described by Louis Leterrier as, well: It’s Raiders meets Rocketeer and Saving Private Ryan." According to an interview that Leterrier gave to the L.A. Times, and a few quotes that are spreading like a virus through the internet, it would appear that Johnston, who got his start in the art department for Raiders of the Lost Ark and …

The Wolfman Release Delayed (Again)

6 August 2009 4:47 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Typically, when a movie studio changes the release date of a movie, it's not necessarily a sign of trouble. Often this is done to take advantage of a holiday or to avoid competing with a movie with a similar target audience. However, when a movie's release is rescheduled twice, rumors start circulating that there are problems with the production. So what does it mean when a movie's release is rescheduled three times like The Wolfman? Well, if there are problems with Universal's The Wolfman, they're not saying.

The Wolfman was initially scheduled for a November 12, 2008 release, but was pushed back to early 2009. When director Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) left, citing "creative differences," the studio met with a whole host of big-name directors before hiring Joe Johnston (Jumanji). The resultant delay caused the movie's release to be pushed back a second time, to November 6. Now Universal has pushed the release …

Channing Tatum Eyes Captain America

14 April 2009 12:59 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The upcoming Avengers film will see four (or more) Marvel superheroes team-up together including Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. The wheels have already started turning to bring these four heroes together, with the latter two still sans an actor to portray them.

Concentrating on The First Avenger: Captain America - a director has already been signed on in the form of Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III and Hidalgo… ouch…), Narnia writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely nabbed to pen the script, and a release date of July 22nd, 2011 set (pushed back from the original May 6th, 2011 date).

Now, as I said, all we need is an actor to dawn the stars-and-striped suit, and pick up that famous shield. So who could play the Captain? Well, how ’bout G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum?

It was rumored a while ago (one which seems to rear it’s head …
