Asian Trailer Watch: 'Bodyguards and Assassins'

26 November 2009 10:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Just as fans of American action movies should be readying themselves for the explosionpalooza that will surely be Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables, which brings together every big-name, bad-guy shooter of the last 20 years, so should fans of Hong Kong martial arts flicks begin bracing themselves in anticipation of the unholy ass-kicking that will be on display in Teddy Chan's upcoming film Bodyguards and Assassins. It tells the story of a group of (mostly undercover) bodyguards who must protect the revolutionary political leader Sun Yat-sen from an onslaught of highly trained assassins sent on the behest of the Emperor to quell the tide of reform in Hong Kong in 1905.

Think of it as 16 Blocks, but instead of a tired Bruce Willis protecting a witness as people shoot at him on the streets of New York, it's the amazing Donnie Yen and a pack of other Asian martial arts stars »

Review: Did you ever see… Assassins?

22 October 2009 1:11 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Cirque de Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is unearthed this week. John C Reilly stars as a vampire who performs at the Cirque Du Freak. He meets a young boy, and agrees to take him on as an apprentice.

The screenplay is written by Brian Helgeland. I recognised the name, so i looked up his filmography. It turns out he has written the screenplay’s of many films, including La Confidential, Conspiracy Theory and Payback, having also directed the latter. And along with the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix), he has a screenplay credit for a personal favourite of mine. So join me as i look back at Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas, as they play Assassins.

I knew nothing of Assassins myself when it was released in 1995. It was only a couple of years later that i spotted it on video, intrigued by this movie i’d never heard of. »

Two New 'Ninja Assassin' Photos Bring Up the Heat

12 August 2009 12:32 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Two fresh photos from the forthcoming martial arts film "Ninja Assassin" have popped out. One captures the shirtless and enraged Raizo, played by Korean pop artist Rain, standing tall amidst the fire, while another one gives out this deadly assassin launching his strike at his opponent inside what seems to be a dojo.

Earlier, director James McTeigue talked about the movie with Slash Film. One of the topics he discussed was the influence of anime for the movie, saying "Yeah, there is actually because anime really did influence what I wanted to do. I guess the obvious one in the way that you see how I dealt with the blood which I guess there's a lot of which I mentioned in the introdcut - which I mentioned into the introduction to the film that you saw."

"I wanted to treat that like anime and the obvious influence there was Ninja Scroll, »

Denis, Rivette, and Moore!: Venice Lineup Announced

30 July 2009 1:10 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Robert here, noticing that the Venice Film Festival announced the lineup for it's 66th installment on Thursday. Here's the in-competition list, with a few bits I managed to find about each film.

Baaria (Opening Film) dir. Giuseppe Tornatore

The director of Cinema Paradiso gives us a three-generation spanning epic about his Italian hometown.

Soul Kitchen dir. Fatih Akin (pictured)

Akin directed the terrific Head-On and The Edge of Heaven (if you haven't seen either or both, do now). He re teams with Birol Unel from Head-On for a comedy about culture and gender clash.

La Doppia Ora dir. Giuseppe Capotondi

It's been tough finding information on this as Venice's website (nor IMDb) has much at the moment. I can tell tell you is that it's a freshman effort, it's Italian, and it's fun to say... La Doppio Ora!

Yi ngoi (Accident) dir. Cheang Pou-Soi

Multiple Personality Disorder report

11 May 2009 9:23 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

We've got a whole bunch of news including stuff we didn't put up last week, so hold on to your horses.

Takashi Miike will be remaking the 1963 Eiichi Kudo film Thirteen Assassins. HanWay will be introducing the films to buyers at Cannes (they also backed Franklyn) and principal photography begins in July. The epic is set in the era of the shogun and follows thirteen assassins who undertake a suicide mission to kill an evil young Lord.. Nice, but I'd rather he do Afro Samurai next. via screendaily

A Production Weekly twitter says that Liv Tyler is in talks to star in Neuromancer which already has Hayden Christiansen reportedly starring and Joseph Kahn directing. I don't have high hopes for this and if Liv will be in the film, consider it ruined.

Some Mortis Rex concept art over at Bd. This thing has been in development forever, hurry up!

Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole and the Legacy Factor

5 April 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Why is it so hard to stay in the present with the movies? The news cycle is constantly asking us to look ahead a year or two. Just barely came to grips with performances we might be loving in 2009 and already we have to think about Nicole Kidman's 2010? Alas, it can't be helped. When it comes to Nicole Kidman we can't look away.

She's taking over Cynthia Nixon's (Sex & The City) Tony winning role as the grieving mother in the hit play Rabbit Hole. Aaron Eckhart takes over for silver fox John Slattery (Mad Men) as the grief-stricken father. Emmy regular and Tony winner Tyne Daly was the third name actor in the Broadway production, playing the wife's mother. No word yet on which movie star will be getting her part. This is yet a further reminder that it's nearly impossible for actors to be cast in the »

Blu-Ray Review: Vin Diesel’s ‘Babylon A.D.’ Passable Only in High-Definition

13 January 2009 11:21 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When did Vin Diesel go from “the next Bruce Willis” to the “the current Steven Seagal”? Diesel’s half-asleep, apathetic performance in the sci-fi action flick “Babylon A.D.” is only one of the problems with a film that was ignored in theaters but has been given a respectable treatment on Blu-Ray.

Director Mathieu Kassovitz garnered international attention with the great “La Haine,” but it’s been a steady downhill foot race since he started making movies in the English language. Sylvester Stallone would likely not include “Assassins” in a career retrospective and Halle Berry has probably wiped “Gothika” from her resume. Now, Vin Diesel has his Kassovitz movie to forget, the misguided and deadly dull “Babylon A.D.”.

Babylon A.D. is released by Fox Home Video on January 6th, 2009.

Babylon A.D.” is essentially a blend of “The Transporter” movies and dozens of post-apocalyptic visions of the future. »
