Bad Story, Terrible Plot Points
claudio_carvalho11 August 2017
"Class of 1999 II: The Substitute" is a bad movie with terrible plot points. The story of a substitute teacher, who seems to be a killer android that comes to a high school where a gangster and his dangerous gang are intimidating a teacher that witnessed him killing another student is a complete mess. The plot is pointless and does not make sense and the conclusion is awful. My vote is four.

Title (Brazil): "Os Donos do Amanhã – A Lição Final" ("The Owners of Tomorrow – The Final Lesson")

Eat this, Michelle Pfeiffer! … And your entire Gangsta's Paradise!
Coventry20 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
There's so much wrong with "Class of 1999 II: The Substitute" I can hardly even begin to list it. And yet, this movie is so energetic and ambitious that I can't possibly bring myself to write overly harsh things about it. Director Spiro Razatos, primarily a stunt coordinator, tries to put a bit too many ideas in his film, but at least you always tell he had the best of intentions. Like Mark L. Lester's "Class of 1999" had few things in common with the original "Class of 1984", this "Class of 1999 II" has very few things in common with its predecessor as well. Gone is the grim and depressing futuristic wasteland ambiance of Lester's film, to be replaced with a normal present day small town setting with only a fairly ordinary juvenile delinquent problem rather and struggling with devastating gang wars. The high school and its population doesn't look that hopeless, even though the students are wearing orange jump suits resembling a prisoner's outfit, and there even still are some teachers – like the lovely Miss. McKenzie – who believe in righteous values like education and discipline. I would say the latter sub plot has something to do with the huge success of "Dangerous Minds" (the actress Caitlin Delany even looks a lot like Michelle Pfeiffer) but "Class of 1999 II" actually came out one year prior, so I'm guessing it's just a coincidence. In the first film, the high school was located in the middle of a no-police-patrolling zone and two competing gangs were killing off each other. Now there's just ONE fatigue old copper to safeguard ONE beautiful young teacher who gets harassed by ONE youthful thug and a couple of his acolytes. In the original there also were three cyborg teachers whereas here there's only one and he even doesn't behave very robotic. Whoever said sequels always meant more, more, more?? John Bolen is the last remaining cyborg in its type, designed by the late Dr. Bob Forrest who was killed by his own creations at the end of the first film, and he infiltrates in a troublesome high-school by posing as a substitute teacher. He seemingly operates on his own initiative and he's also quite the kick boxer! He somewhat becomes the guarding angel of the noble Miss McKenzie, much against the will of her paint ball-instructor boyfriend and teenage assailants. Then there's also this weird, allegedly FBI- guy tracking John Bolon down because he knows about his robotic characteristics. "Class of 1999 II" is a thoroughly silly flick, but it nevertheless remains extremely enjoyable to watch. Undemanding Sci-Fi/horror fanatics will definitely benefice from the fact director Razatos is a stunt specialist. There are plenty of well-staged action sequences and virulent fights. Sasha Mitchell is decent as the supposedly (but not really) emotionless robo-teacher and grabs every possibility there is to demonstrate his impressive kick-boxing skills. Problem with him, however, is that I can't help seeing him in the role of slightly moronic cousin Cody in the stupid 90's sitcom "Step By Step". There are a couple of wickedly far-fetched and crazy plot twists near the end as well as a spectacular death toll during a game of paint balling. This is the second 90's horror flick, after "Child's Play 3" in which a game of paint ball turns into a bloody massacre.

The Weakest Film in the Trilogy
Uriah437 April 2022
This film essentially begins where its predecessor left off with the four combat droids from the last picture having been destroyed earlier in the year. That being said, however, there now appears to be another combat droid by the name of "John Bolen" (Sasha Mitchell) operating as a substitute teacher at a high school in Bend, Oregon. To that effect, he also malfunctions and not only kills several unruly kids but also the principal of that school as well. Clearly realizing that he cannot remain there any longer, he then travels to Monroeville, California to serve as a substitute teacher at a reform school for very troubled high school students. Needless to say, in his mind this is an extremely target-rich environment which requires the only solution he is familiar with--with disastrous consequences for all concerned. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this was easily the worst film in the trilogy which began with "Class of 1984" and continued with "Class of 1999" produced four years earlier. Not only did it lack originality but even the surprising twist at the end wasn't really that effective either. In short, this was a rather weak sequel and I have rated it accordingly. Below average.

A few nice explosions, but nothing else of worth
Leofwine_draca17 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
A lame, by-the-numbers science fiction thriller. Occasionally I don't know why I bother watching films; the feeling hit me when watching this. One of those absolutely pointless, low-budget sequels designed to cash in, this offers nothing at all of worth. The reason I got it? The pictures on the box, sad to say. They showed some androids which looked pretty good, but on actual viewing of the film, there is none of this. In fact the reason I watched it was to wait and see the actual special effects of the robots - which were shown on the back cover. Come the twist ending, I realised that I had been horribly mislead. The substitute of the title is in fact NOT an android, instead a de-programmed man who struggles with his human nature. What a letdown!

The only special effects of note are a few uninspired death scenes and shootings - but there's no gore to speak of, at least nothing is as graphic as you would come to expect. The film shambles on from scene to boring scene, involving us in stupid and pointless teachers who sleep together a lot, argue and fight. The acting is incredibly bad - even worse than in a television movie. The substitute bloke is played by someone out of KICKBOXER 2, which tells you something about the level this film achieved. I had a quick look at some info on the first film in this series, and was amazed to see the cast including Malcolm McDowell and Pam Grier. What happened here! We get one nobody and a whole group of non-actors and actresses. It's insulting.

While there are a few okay-ish moments involving the sub murdering the students he doesn't like, these aren't really handled very well at all. They're not violent enough and there's nothing memorable. What little budget was available was obviously wasted on some huge explosions, which are nice to look at but, as is the case with the rest of the film, lack substance. How many times do we have to watch the android bloke walk towards the camera while something explodes behind him? To make matters worse, some interesting-looking clips are shown - from the first film, presumably, just to rub in what we're missing out on here.

The big finale involves happenings at a paintball game, giving you some idea of the tiny scale events are played out on here. You know it's a low budget film when the background is bare and lacking in decoration or other actors (as it frequently is here). Events draw out for a ridiculously suspended "will he kill he or won't he" sequence where the substitute repeatedly tries to kill the heroine before being stopped (either by himself or by somebody else). I could have told you the outcome from reading the back of the box. This is a film to avoid at all costs, as it's entirely, utterly pointless.

high school for thirtysomethings?
Violet X13 March 2002
This movie is pretty bad in and of itself, but the thing that makes it over-the-top ridiculous is that all the students look about 30 years old, while the cyborg/substitute looks about 16. I know he's not, but next to all the "teens" he sure looks it!

Is this supposed to be a comedy? I found it quite funny, but the film takes itself so seriously. Maybe that's what makes it even funnier.

Watch if you have some time to waste and want a laugh.

Where is "MSTK" When You Need It?
jwpappas28 March 2005
Oh man, this braindead shlockfest looks like it just may have been made in someone's Califorina back yard! The acting is sub-porno, the sets would've made Ed Wood giggle & the dialog is some of the most unintentionally hilarious drivel ever to exude from a human head. In a weird way I recommend it, albeit only in a certain way. CLASS OF 1999 II is so relentlessly silly, cheap & badly acted that you can't help but play the home version of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000. If you're hanging out with a few friends & have downed a few beers (or other mind altering substances) this hapless craptacular can be highly entertaining. Sasha Mitchell's wooden non acting is awe inspiring (or perhaps vomit inducing). The film also contains one of the dopiest & most unerotic sex scenes since SHOWGIRLS. If you subscribe to Showtime this deliriously inept flick pops up a lot VERY late at night or early morning (for you wake-n-bakers).

Wow what a bad movie
benc829 August 2000
Hmmm. Seems to be a blatant terminator ripoff, even using the same music at times. This sure is terrible. Bad acting and very bad casting choices. How they chose the guy from "Step by Step" to be the cyborg is a mystery to me. Watch it only if you want to make fun of it with some friends.

Predicts the future!
Horrorible_Horror_Films16 December 2005
This movie really does predict the future! It was made in 1994, and early in the movie there is a scene with the principle and he says something about president clinton being incited. Of course in 1999 he wasn't indicted, but he was impeached by the house! Wow! Conspiracy? Or just a really stupid movie? OK, the past 3 days I have watched "Saturn 3", "Shredder" and now "Class of 1999 II: The Substitute" and by far Class of 1999 II was the worse, compare all 3 movies, that is really saying something. This stupid piece of crap didn't even have gruesome deaths to keep it interesting. The attempt at a meaningful plot made it so unbearable. The 'gangs' in this movie wear the most ridiclous clothes, who is going to be in a gang and look like that? Not worth watching at all, not even to laugh at.

Nothing special.
DigitalRevenantX720 April 2008
Plot Synopsis: California, 2001. John Bolen is a substitute teacher who travels from school to school, secretly killing troublesome students. He heads to Monroeville High School, where he helps a female teacher who is being pressured into not testifying by a student who she saw murder someone in cold blood. Bolen then proceeds to murder the student's friends, while being pursued by a federal agent who believes that Bolen is the last of the A77 military battle androids.

"Class of 1999 II: The Substitute" is the sequel to "Class of 1999", which in turn is the sequel to "Class of 1984". Class of '84 was an unofficial remake of the '50s classic "Blackboard Jungle". The film was a violent tale about a teacher who took on the gangs that threatened him & his family. Class of '99 switched sides & became an over-the-top punk action film. The Substitute reverts back to the teachers' side. The script is nothing special but recycles future clichés, with prison-like school uniforms & barcoded car licence plates. For the acting, Sasha Mitchell plays the lead role with a wooden determination, which is appropriate for the role. The action scenes are well executed, although the climax is ham-strung by a cop-out of an ending.

The whole venture is classic 90's.
tarbosh2200024 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
In the future of 1999, punks rule the hallways and classrooms of our nation's schools. Sure, they may look like they're between 35 and 40 years old, but they still enjoy spray-painting the walls and causing general mayhem. But not if John Bolen (Mitchell) has anything to say about it. Bolen is a stone-faced cybernetic organism that believes just about everything in the world "leads to anarchy". So he stops problems at their source by violently killing anyone he believes to be a no-goodnik. When a young, pretty, and somewhat naive teacher, Jenna McKensie (Dulany) wants to testify in a trial because she witnessed a murder perpetrated by evil student in his mid 30's Sanders (West), school authorities do nothing, local cops advise against it, and her boyfriend Emmett (Cassavetes) is relatively ineffectual. It's a good thing John Bolen is here to bring corporal punishment back to the school system! For some unknown reason, Jenna actually takes a shine to the possibly misunderstood killer robot. But when Bolen flips out and can no longer "maintain order", will he mistakenly turn on Jenna? Find out today! Why a second sequel to Class of 1984 (1982) - let's not forget about Class of 1999 (1990) - technically speaking, needed to exist, we don't exactly know - but there's plenty of fun to be had here. Because it was filmed in the 90's, it not only has some VR (because in the future students will learn using those big, bulky masks), but the final third of the film actually is a Paintball Gone Wrong, or PGW, slog. But therein lies one of the problems with the movie. It moves along at a nice clip for a little over the first half, but then slows way down towards the end. It's almost like a robot running out of fuel. It needed to have a giant lunch like John Bolen does in the movie. The movie is at is best when Bolen is going around killing punks, but can that sustain a whole 90 minute film? Sasha Mitchell is great as Bolen. Imagine a robotic Keanu Reeves. Which shouldn't be too tough. Mitchell as this Keanu-bot shines in his role, especially when he just stands there emotionlessly after walking away from an explosion. Most people would continue to walk. He just stands. That's just how emotionless he is. He really meets his match against the punks (even in the end credits, they're known as "punks"). They tend to wear jumpsuits, and have strange makeup and bizarre hair. Because it's the future, you see. Sometimes they even wear their jumpsuit with a leather vest. Now that's a fashion statement. But as we've seen before, Bolen has an all-black "revenge outfit" that he puts on when things get serious. Mitchell has some good lines and some very entertaining stone-faces that help the movie along. But once it gets to the PGW section, the movie as a whole seems to lose focus and go off the rails.

The whole venture is classic 90's, from the VR to the PGW. The VHS seemed to be a video store mainstay back in the day. While some people may say this movie is nothing more than a "Substitute" for a better film, we say it brings back video store memories and isn't bad. And any movie that takes place in the future which is now the past gets extra points in our book.

* * Out Of Five
bronsonskull7217 March 2006
Sasha Mitchell stars as John Bolen an android teacher (From the original) who terminates a bunch of unruly kids and some innocent ones just for the hell of it in this baffling sequel. What one is baffled about is that this is a sequel to Class Of 1984 and Class Of 1999 yet it's still has a 2 in it's title. Sasha Mitchell is the only reason to see this undistinguished fare, since he's the only one who seems well suited to the part. It would've been nicer had Mitchell done more kickboxing and been the main villain but Razatos never overcomes this dilemma and in the end makes Mitchell into an anti-hero. Sadly the kids this time are so irritating that you can't help but find Mitchell lovable, being that he's wiping out the most obnoxious kids this side of a Saved By The Bell episode.

Classic Film
Lee-Jay14 November 2002
Class of 1999 is in my opinion a good film. This is one of those films where you like it or you don't .. Sasha Mitchell is very good as John Bolen. Although it is a low budget film, the story is very smooth running with some memorable moments. Sasha Mitchell who originally starred in Dallas, comes across nicely as the school teacher with a secret, inside he is in conflict between all the traits that he holds dear. This is in one of my favourite films. *****

It is not a bad movie at all.
rlatanville18 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The Premise: A government agent is tracking what he believes to be a rogue android on a killing spree, disguised as a substitute teacher. That teacher is John Bolen, who arrives at a new high school to implement deadly discipline.

The conclusion: People may not like this movie, but it has some good moments. Sasha Mitchell is a charismatic figure on screen. he is imposing and fun to watch whether he plays an Italian, an airhead fun dude on a classic TV show or this. The supporting cast were good too. The writing could use more and acting could been better.

Spoiler alert. A substitute teacher shows up killing delinquents. A somebody is out to track him thinking it is the a surviving robot teacher from the 1st movie. Meanwhile a female teacher is testifying on a student who hassling or harassing or bullying her into not to. The climax is at a paint ball war games where John Bolen is doing a killing spree but the bully is out to kill the female teacher. A twist, John Bolen is not a killer robot but a demented kid of the creator of the robot. He eventually gets blown up in a bunker and all is good but with a twist at the very end.

This movie would be rated R, a nudity sex scene and blood and violence.

aweful

Warning: Spoilers
This film is absolute junk. If you liked the first, you will absolutely hate every minute of this. I loved the first one so much that I watched it twice in a row without a break. Then I watched the first one again the next day, twice! This film (the sequel) was so bad that I am suprised I managed to watch it once. I can summarise the story here. There's this guy, that starts killing people, the film tries to convince you that he is a robot, then at the end there's a twist - he is not a robot. It was actually obvious from the beginning that he was not a robot because he was eating spaghetti, (in the first one it was made clear that robots don't eat food). But even if you didn't know that, it was still rubbish. Watch the first one, avoid this like the plague.

Could have been good but (contains some spoilers)...
AndyVanScoyoc18 February 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This movie could have been good. It was a shame it wasn't. The only two redeeming qualities to this film were Sasha Mitchell (John Bolen)and Rick Hill (G.D. Ash.)

Sasha Mitchell plays a renegade cyborg bent on keeping order in schools, much like his predecessors in the first "Class of 1999." Rick Hill plays a government agent desperately searching for him, but not for what he leads others to believe the reasoning to be. Government agent Gordon D. Ash has his his own diabolical plans for the battle droid, if he can only catch him and get his cooperation instead of being ruthlessly murdered for his interference in the battle droid's plans.

It was a disappointment that the sequal to the very dark and very well done "Class of 1999" did not follow the first one's guidelines. Instead of being set even further in the future (in the first one, even the cars were futuristic)it seemed to be set in some remote, backwoods, hick, town.

Sasha Mitchell's performance was riveting as the cold, emotionless, calculating and cunning battle droid, posing as teacher John Bolen. His only vice, Jenna Mckenzie (played pathetically by Caitlyn Dulaney)a teacher at the school he has decided to try and straighten out. When Jenna's boyfriend Emmett Granzer (played by Nick Cassavetes in probably the worst role of his life) begins to suspect the new teacher in some murders, the danger builds until it it either Jenna or John in a showdown of wit versus evil. Throw in a pathetic performance by Gregory West as Sanders (whose name constantly changes pronunciation through out the film, sometimes being Sanders with an "s" and sometimes being Sander, with no "s"...where was the editing crew on this movie?) as a gang banging loser who is out to get Miss Mckenzie no matter what and it all adds up to one of the worst sequals ever filmed.

Sasha and Rick both should have passed these two rolls up and waited for something better. Like I said, this movie could have been good, it really could have. The story was decent and they even had flashbacks to the original "Class of 1999" so you could follow what they were trying to achieve with this storyline. However, it could only have survived with the right cast and definately a different location.

However, with a dusty park in Los Angeles and poor casting (Mitchell and Hill couldn't have been expected to carry the entire movie, yet it seemed that was what was expected of them)there really was no hope for this movie.

Bad, but not that bad...
poolandrews22 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Class of 1999 II: The Substitute starts like any other ordinary morning at at an everyday American high-school except that they have a new substitute teacher named John Bolen (Sasha Mitchell) who is in fact a reprogrammed military robot. A reprogrammed military robot who likes to kill off the unruly students & when local school thug Sanders (Gregory West) & his scumbag gang starts to hassle his fellow teacher Jenna McKensie (Caitlin Dulany) he takes a very dim view of it...

Directed by Spiro Razatos I thought Class of 1999: The Substitute was an OK time waster, I thought this sequel to the original Class of 1999 (1990) was going to be awful & in that respect it didn't disappoint & I suppose it was but not quite a bad as I thought it was going to be. The script by Mark Sevi moves along at a fair pace although after the opening 20 or so minutes it leaves the classroom & descends into a drama as a teacher is harassed because she is going to testify against a student & this is what the bulk of the film consists of rather than the classroom action & violence of the original before it ends with a paint-ball contest gone wrong, in fact I can only remember one scene set in a classroom during the whole film. The character's & narrative could have been better too, for instance early on in the film Bolen kills the schools principal & this is never mentioned again which seemed odd considering he was the principal & therefore a pretty important person & the kid that he recognises & kills for reasons we never discover. There is also a distinct lack of exploitative elements which don't help, overall it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be but it's still pretty bad all the same.

Director Spiro does OK, there's some low budget but reasonable action scenes but I'd liked to have had some gore as there isn't any as it stands at the moment. There are a few OK one-liners as Bolen dispatches his victims.

Technically Class of 1999: The Substitute is alright, there are one or two nice shots but nothing outstanding. The acting isn't up to much I'm afraid.

Class of 1999: The Substitute isn't a particularly great film, in fact if I was pushed I'd say it was a pretty crap one but it did keep me watching until the end & at least it wasn't as bad as I had been expecting.

Wow! What a piece of crap!
preppy-320 June 2001
A cyborg poses as a substitute teacher in schools and kills kids who are misbehaving....yawn. Boring, suspenseless, lousy acting, stupid predictable script...a waste. The only thing that kept me watching was the guy who played the cyborg. He couldn't act his way out of a paper bag, but he was really nice-looking! Other than that there's nothing worth watching here.

Wow. Not good.
BandSAboutMovies15 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
While a sequel to Class of 1999, none of the storylines cross over from that film. There is, however, flashback footage on hand to help pad out the running time and give some vague remembrance of what has gone on before.

This movie is the very definition of a "the store's closing, you better grab something" VHS rental era pick.

John Bolen - no relation to my old roommate and TNA Gut Check winner - is the new substitute teacher in Bend, Oregon. He beats up some punks for skipping class and when another teacher threatens to narc on him, he breaks the guy's neck. John is played by Sasha Mitchell, who was Cody Lambert on Step by Step.

While obviously one of the androids from the last movie, John can still fall in love with a fellow teacher and go to war with a museum currator played by Nick Cassavetes (The Wraith).

There is also much paintballing and a year before Monica Lewinsky mention that Clinton had been indicted.

Originally called Class of 2001: The Substitute, this was directed by Spiro Razatos, who is still doing stunt work on this day on movies like the new Fast and the Furious and the Marvel films.

Missed the point completely
bill_is_always11 April 2012
I saw Class of 1999 when I was a kid. Thought it was the bee's knees. Another kid in 7th grade said I should look at the sequel. Here I am, 17 years later watching this thing and wondering, whaaaaa???? All the mini plots had me a little confused and towards the end I didn't know who was who. The director could put anyone in there and I wouldn't know the difference.

I watched it all the way through and in the last scene I was hoping for a killer robot teacher to rip the girl in half or at least come through my wall and rip me in half. Either way, there no killer robots. I was tricked and I feel violated.

Luckily, I missed the origin
lurch-1715 July 2005
From reading the other 'comments', I assume that this sequel was not true to the original. I found this film quite intriguing, and am glsd I missed the original. Now maybe I will watch it.

It's development of the 'paint ball' warriors was informative as to how this activity actually goes on.

But getting to the point - Jenna is extremely hot, especially in the flesh shown. I liked the plot - a crazy kid thinking he is a droid and developig droid characteristics - original. Usually, it's the other way around - a droid developing human characteristics.

Too bad all low budget mush isn't this good.

Lots of noise, little acting, no showcase for any of the actors. Not even a decent Horror premise. I watched this on a Sunday afternoon when nothing else was new on the tube and I still found that it was waste. I hope that Cassavetes finds better roles in the future as he looked promising.

Excellent!!
The__Watcher20 January 2001
I've seen "Class Of 1984" , "Class Of 1999" and this one , which is much better. I thought this was way better than those other "Class of..." movies. This reminded me of "The Terminator" because of the cyborg and the music. Sasha Mitchell (star of Kickboxer 2,3 and 4) really acted like a cyborg , it's kinda funny sometimes. I don't know why some people don't like it , I think it's a good movie. I wonder if there's gonna be a sequel to this , it might be called "Class of 2000". I hope there will be even though I doubt it.

Exploitation from the future
flokkiblag3 July 2018
Yeah, certainly it represents not a mainstream movie, also not a masterpiece. But, if you need to spend almost 90 minutes of brainless time this pseudosequel is good. The protagonist, Sasha Mitchell, plays good his role of cruel cyborg teacher, killing and destroying all things he hates around him. In fact, the scene of the incipit (with a school gang burned in a car) shows up it all, exploding in a gratuitous exploitation. Have a nice vision!

Class of 1999 II: The Substitute
Rautus21 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Class of 1984 on Zone Horror and loved it, I even went out and bought it on DVD. So when I saw Class of 1999 II on the same channel I thought OK, I didn't expect much with the reviews it got but I thought I'd try it out.

The plot is about a new substitute teacher John coming to a new school and killing off unruly kids but he's apparently a Cyborg. Meanwhile a man is tracking him and planning to stop him before he kills them all like the Cyborgs almost did in Class of 1999. I enjoyed seeing the footage from the first film.

But it seems that the Cyborg has an eye on a young teacher and falls for her, he even watches her through the window at night.

Then the teachers boyfriend hosts a paint ball game and the Cyborg teacher is planning on killing every student attending it, meanwhile a gang she ran into earlier on is planning on killing her.

It's not long before the man tracking the Cyborg finds him and tells him that he wants to copy him and have an army of Cyborgs before finding something about him before getting stabbed.

The Cyborg then goes off and kills the gang as they have the teacher before chasing her, the agent is still alive and tells the Cyborg that he isn't one, he's actually a human who was Dr. Forrest's son but cracked up and thought he was a Cyborg.

The only reason bullets didn't hurt him was because he was wearing a high tech body Armour.

John then kills him by throwing a knife into his chest and tries to kill her but she traps him in the bunker and kills him.

Class of 1999 II: The Substiute isn't a bad film, I enjoyed seeing the John character, he had a hard a** quality to him. 5/10.
